  1. I can highly recommend the classes with Sian as I recently finished a course with 2 friends. When we had good weather, the classes were held in her lovely garden. Sian patiently taught me how to turn my tatty old blanket box into a thing of beauty: the cost of buying a new one would have been far more than the course and materials. I?ve got the bug now and am out looking for my next project!
  2. Billy also talked me through what our boiler problem could be: even went as far as sending me WhatsApp pictures to help. All for nothing and because he was fully booked. A true gent with old school values!
  3. I know someone who recently held their wedding reception at The Crooked Well in Camberwell. They hired the whole pub. http://www.thecrookedwell.com/
  4. I'm well aware of that Grok as I am a union member myself. The 'friend' is a young person in their first casual job and does not have the experience of how rotten life can be when someone tries to exploit them. I'm sure after this, they will see the benefit in joining a union.
  5. Thanks for your help but we have already been down that route. There are only a few days to appeal a decision and the person in question is trying to delay the meeting to try and see that he appeal deadline is missed.
  6. My friend is in desperate need of union representation tomorrow evening 7pm at a local establishment. She is not a member but is prepared to join as will other colleagues who have been unfairly treated. The establishment have made serious allegations and have not followed ACAS guidelines. It would be appreciated if you could only comment on this thread if you are able to help of offer advice. Thanks in advance.
  7. Sporting Dulwich FC are a friendly local 11-a-side club, and we are looking for a goal keeper having lost our regular unexpectedly at the beginning of the season. We are an adult team playing in the Metropolitan Sunday Football League, 4th Division. Our home ground is Dulwich parking playing on Sunday mornings and we train at Dulwich Hamlet Astro turf pitches on a Wednesday evening at 7.30pm. Anyone interested, please call Derek on 07762 599602.

GriffDHFC, I'm glad you've had the good grace to respond to foxgirl's comments in such a light hearted way rather than rise to her unpleasant accusations. You asked what DHFC supporters thought so before you suggest I may be a spokesperson for the club, (yes, we know that you will investigate previous posts and when I registered), I will tell you that I am one of the many fans who loves going along to support their local team. Clearly you?ve never been to Hamlet or you would?ve noted the great sense of pride and community for both fans and players. You would?ve also come across the fans who willingly give up their time to volunteer in a variety of roles as well as tirelessly working to raise funds for the club. Perhaps if you came down to see for yourself you?d realise that what you are suggesting is an absolute insult to them.
  9. Cracking game last night & as always, great community spirit. Looking froward to Saturdays game.

When she questioned him he said he was looking for his daughters ball which is rubbish. She contacted the police who have told her that this guy exactly matches the description of a prolific burglar they have been after for a while and said to call 999 immediately if I spot him. I live on Melford Rd.
  11. An ambulance was blocking the road while the crew dealt with and elderly resident who had taken ill or was injured in her home. The police diverted the flow of traffic rather than let it back up. I don't know the outcome but hope she is recovering.
  12. Metallic - The Head raised the issue of the pending Ofsted report and wanted to share with the parents what he thought it would include. As this was unconfirmed he felt it was only prudent to ask parents to keep it confidential to avoid unsubstantiated gossip and rumours.
  13. I have a daughter in year 10 at Kingsdale who is extremely happy to be there. As a parent I welcome the report and am pleased to read that Ofsted still consider the school to have the same fine qualities it recognised in the full inspection of 2010. To arrive at the school with only 30 minutes notice and to be able to report on such positives is a wonderful achievement: * Students are polite, courteous and very friendly; their behaviour in lessons and around the site does them great credit. * Students enjoy school and appreciate the good relationships they have with staff. * Students feel safe and secure in school and say that incidents of bullying are rare and, when they occur, are dealt with quickly and effectively. * The school's arrangements for safeguarding are robust and meet statutory requirements. * Staff are provided with clear, detailed and helpful guidance to support their work in this area. * Students concentrate well and remain highly focused in lessons. * The large majority of staff are very positive about the way in which the school is led and managed. Many praise the high quality of support that they receive from the school's middle and senior leaders. Isn't this exactly what we want from a school for our children? I find it odd that some people, when sharing their views on the report, chose to ignore these outstanding points and focus instead on the 'small minority of staff' whose experience at the school differs significantly to the majority. I have worked (no, not Kingsdale) in several secondary schools and have yet to come across one where 100% of the staff are happy with everything. Pressure is put on schools by continually changing government policies, targets and guidelines. This can result in new working practices having to be implemented, sometimes with very little time and this can be very stressful to staff, who perhaps have to change their working ways. Teaching has become too bogged down with bureaucracy and administration; however the management is duty bound to see that this is fulfilled and it is a fact of life that not everyone deals well with change. I've no doubt that this alone could cause great stress to anyone who chose the profession with the noble intention of dedicating their career to educating children rather than having to keep detailed checks on their every action. I find it very disappointing though to see that most of the negative and speculative comments regarding Kingsdale come from people who have no or little first had experience of the school but rather a significant few who seem to have no connection with the school at all. This can also be very disconcerting for parents whose children may be joining Kingsdale in year 7 so why not give a thought to them. I have attended the parents forum for 4 years and hope that the new parents will take the opportunity to come and see for themselves the extra mile everyone goes to ensure our children gets the best from their education. From that, you can then make your own informed opinions and judgements rather than from hearsay on this forum.
  14. Dunamis2011, what a shame you seen disappointed that you daughter has gotten into Kingsdale. I?m interested to know on what basis you feel you?ve been ?taken in by the hype? without your child even having started there. Could it be due to posts from other people (particularly those that do not have children there) on this forum who have cast doubt over the choice you made? I hope not: give the school a chance, the best measure of that will be when your daughter starts there and comes home happy. From a practical point of view regarding your acceptance acknowledgment, I?m sure you will receive it in good time. From experience of working in schools, I know that this is one of the busiest times of year and as Kingsdale is so popular they will be inundated with enquiries from all of the parents whose child didn?t get in along with the several hundred acceptance responses such as yours. I have a daughter there in year 9 and she couldn?t be happier. Ironically we chose the school when nobody else wanted to know because we believed the ?hype? and in all honestly we have never had one regret. By the way, I hope the fact that you are posting at 4.25am is not because of losing sleep with worry!

  16. Chrism, I sorry to hear that you feel Kingsdale is not offering enough experience outside of the school. I also have a child in year 9 and since being there she has spent a week Kingswood Educational Centre in year 7 along with several other educational day trips such as Deptford Creek for Geography, Rochester Castle for history along with others which support sport, music and drama. There have been some excellent opportunities for children to go to Namibia, Ypres, skiing in the Alps, Paris and there?s also a trip coming up to Spain in May. While some of these have only available to students participating in a specific subject, I don?t personally feel that my child has been disadvantaged. I understand that the trips that my daughter has been on to date may not have be as exciting as going abroad but they still have several years left at school to be given that opportunity. I also understand what you are saying about not seeing your child?s work and in the beginning of year 7 I also had the same issue. For me it was a matter of realising that I was trying to have the same expectations of primary school where it was relatively easy to see your child?s work as they were in one classroom with one book for each subject. It wasn?t until I started to work in secondary schools (not Kingsdale!) that I could grasp how different it was. Remember that the students are going from class to class, from teacher to teacher and it?s neither practical for them to carry around an armful of books nor wise as we all know how easily the children misplace things. On the occasion where my daughter had bought home books I can see they have been marked and comments have been added by the teacher for clarification. If I want to know more about my child?s work or have a concern, I send an email which is a good way to keep informed and also builds a relationship with the teacher. On the times when I have missed out on information however, it was usually because the letter was stuffed at the bottom of my daughter?s bag or she simply forgot to tell me. I?d suggest, that if you do have any issues that you speak to one of the senior managers as I?ve always found them to be very responsive and proactive.
  17. I have a daughter in year 9 at Kingsdale who is extremely happy there and I have nothing but praise for the school and staff. She has made wonderful academic and personal achievements since starting there and feels safe and looked after. Communication is good and the school actively encourages parental involvement which is unheard of in the majority of secondary schools. Four years ago the rumours were rife and Kingsdale wasn?t even a consideration for us but I was very fortunate to be encouraged by another parent to come and see for myself. I'm forever grateful to her as she opened my eyes to what a wonderful school Kingsdale is and it ended up being our first choice. As parents, we have now in our 3rd year of being proved that we were right to go with our gut instinct and not be put off by gossip. I?m surprised that there are still people out there that choose to still hang on the ?old reputation?. You need to ask them if they have ever actually been to the school or have any personal experience (not friend of a friend) to substantiate their comments. Surely the parents who post on this forum and have children at Kingsdale are in a better position to give you the feedback you need. Wishing all parents with the difficult choice ahead of them the very best.
  18. I walked past the sewer collapse yesterday at 3.30pm and there was not a soul to be seen working. I walked along Lordship Lane today at 12.30 then back again at 2.30 between Court Lane and the Plough and guess what...not a workman in sight both times. There was however some seriously long tail backs. It doesn't take much to figure out why it's going to take weeks to complete the repairs. The more worrying thing about this though is the lack of pedestrian crossing at The Plough because of the temporary lights. It?s a very busy crossing, particularly for children and as an adult I found it very unsafe today. There is a sign telling drivers to watch out for pedestrians so are we to assume this is the only safety precaution that has been taken since the terrible tragedy that occurred earlier this year at the temporary lights at Peckham? The Peckham intersection road works took far longer than expected and not a lot of work was seen to be going on. There was no safe way to cross the road. A child lost her life. A lesson learned...? It doesn?t appear so.
  19. Fair enough duchess, perhaps I was being too hasty: The reason being is that I've read too many posts where something traumatic happens and people who have not been involved however feel the need respond with inappropriate comments or opinions which have no place. This only causes distress to those who might have been involved or affected. My feelings run high about this danger spot as both my friend?s daughter and my nephew were both hit by cars crossing the road there (and thankfully made full recoveries). I have also personally witnessed several other pedestrian accidents in the same place and feel outraged that TFL still haven?t put pedestrian lights at the intersection. It seems it?s more important to keep the traffic flowing quickly than consider the safety of the public trying to cross the road. I?ve heard that they may finally change the lights later this year but how many lives and injuries could?ve been saved in the meanwhile!
  20. duchessofdulwich Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > ... unfortunatly i do not have medical > qualifications to make a clinical diagnosis, > flippant comment? rather unfair comment Unfair comment? I don't think so, it was obvious from the previous post that someone had been knocked down so to suggest it may have been a fit was to trivialise it. What was the point? By the way, the victim was a small boy who has sustained a very nasty open fracture.
  21. People like you who make flippant coments make me sick, it was a child and it's not looking good.
  22. We have a daughter in year 8 at Kingsdale who is extremely happy there and as parents knew very early on that we had made the right decision in sending her there. She has flourished since then, has a large group of friends and has never had any experience of bullying. Yes, you will find that some of the teachers are strict but to me that is something to be applauded. I work in a secondary school and see the difference it can make when a teacher has the respect of the students. I know of two children in my child?s year group who left. They have both returned, with one of them coming back from Alleyns. I also know of someone moving their child in year 9 from Haberdasher?s Asks in New Cross to Kingsdale.
