I would have thought with something like 10,000 miles of coastline and millions of gallons flopping in and out a couple of times a day, there would be more energy to be harnessed and exploited than we could ever use, so we could become a net exporter of energy. Some used to argue that they spend a percentage of the oil revenues on renewables, some of the more cynical might argue that it was a lost opportunity.

The company was established in 2000 and its principal corporate shareholders include BankInvest, ESB International, EDF Energy, Guernsey Electricity and Triodos Bank. I spotted this in Brendan's "turbine" link.

I see this as a potentially new industry, and we should be in it up to our necks.
  7. The government speak of real estate as if it is our economy. Big mistake, money is made from what products we make and sell abroad. Nothing in real estate makes wealth for the country. When we produce like China, then we will be loaded just like them. Soooo not a five minute job then.
  8. The patrons did come from afar
  9. Shoshntosh wrote: SteveT, what are the rents like? and how do you know this (i mean this honestly)? Well I had half a dozen shops earlier in my career, and those were the biggest long term costs, second only to the cost of staff. I have seen no reason to change my views, unless a shopkeeper tells me otherwise.

  11. I have found the reception staff there obnoxious, resentful and singularly unhelpful. When it eventually goes out of business, I suppose they will kick up a stink when they become unemployed. Managerial staff should earn their corn and deal with truculent encumbents, it is an old complaint that was mentioned on this forum months ago.
  12. Tuning into ED forum turns an intolerably dull job into a more fun kind of thing, so there is less staff resignations, less suicide attempts, less punctures etc.

I new this thread would bring out the high tech' scientific boffins. It's very reassuring and amazing, the wide ranging talent on this forum.
  17. Huguenot I believe you have forgotten the most house frau friendly item, NON STICK frying pans, those and space blankets which became crisp bags, are the most prolific results of space exploration, as far as I'm aware.
