Yes Grand-parents are grumpy old men and women, they always have been, but they do have other more positive sides. Telling stories about my childhood and youth are guaranteed to keep children spellbound. Knowledge of the way of life of bygone days cannot be bought. Grans stories were better than grandads. My mothers were better than my fathers. My children thought my droning on about life in the fifties and sixties more interesting than their mothers, who had a life through school and university and very few stories of urchin street life.

I am afraid that it's not up to you, diy skills are obtained by working as or with tradesmen, everyone I left school with had to buy a kit of tools. Now they leave school with '0's and 'A's and sit in front of a screen at work. Hardly the picture you were painting for your offspring. When I left school I was expected to "get a trade" which no-one could take away from you, and if I had any other ambitions they took a poor second place. I was always in the top 4 or 5 at woodwork and metalwork without trying too hard. It seemed an inevitability that I would end up working with my hands as I was not interested in further education, I wanted money, and working in a paid job seemed the way forward. My buddy who retired a couple of years ago, recently tiled the bathroom for his daughter and son in law, the soninlaw played football whilst the job was being completed. He works in insurance and has little or no practical skills. So my buddy ended up bailing them out. I have several such stories I could recount of retiree's shoring up their ham-fisted offspring.
  3. Perhaps one day the country where you live will be considered an energy 'larder' and the population will be given a lifetime of 'energy units' which will discourage/prevent couples from producing large families. As the Chinese say 'why breed offspring which cannot be reared'.
  4. I heard one precocious 9 year old tell another "you have more chance of being murdered than winning the lottery". I have yet to invest in a lottery ticket.
  5. I heard something mentioned on the radio today when someone suggested the money should have gone directly to the borrowers, not the failing banks and building societies. Interesting concept.

  7. Until we have the figures (of the proportion) it is merely speculation.
  8. The pied blackbird is pecking away at a pear (conference) they seem to prefer them to apples for some reason.

Not really Gigsy, you wanted to know what it would be like to throw him to the ground and have your wicked way, thus leaving a dried husk of a spent male......... I guess that's what women in their prime think?
  10. Should be snowdrops, then crocuses followed by daffs. Of course this all means nought if they haven't been planted!
  11. I suspect JW if you invested in a bicycle you may never worry about a bus route again.
  12. bonniebird wrote:- Why should the good responsible dog owners and their dogs be punished??!! It seems that this might be the case if the safety of individuals is at risk, the sueing laws can lead councils into debt if there are any claims. Why does 'health and safety' become invisible where dog attacks are concerned. I know this was created for work ethics but dog walkers are working in this environment.
  13. Granny's tend to live much longer when they live with a family. The advantages are that you can get great yorkshire puddings and excellent pastry on pies when grans around, provided they are like my grand mother. They are also a valued source of home help, and it saves the offspring becoming 'latch-key' kids.
  14. It doesn't matter much what we do as we are only 60 million. When China embarked on a policy of opening a new coal fired power station per week, that is frightening. When America's industry churns out more pollution than anyone else's in the civilized world, that is worrying. When India starts rolling out cars for under a thousand pounds which they have anticipated, that is terrifying.
  15. He should get a damned good thrashing, and sent to bed wi' out any tea. Dirty little devil. I have no time for men who don't wear the trousers.
  16. Sticking the boot in when a man's down is 'not cricket' Ted Max.
  17. That's great, thanks Jah. It puts a little faith back in, which raises my spirits. If I ever mention corrupt MPs I shall have to make an exception for 'The Beast', good old Dennis Skinner. He's always been good value.
  18. SeanMG wrote:- You haven't addressed the question at all Should a criminal be spared if they are religious? Like a catholic priest fiddling with children? Then a resounding NO.
  19. If they are a legally elected MP then my answer is a resounding YES.

  24. It seems to affect the youngsters in their youth, when they take the 'beloved' home for the first time, and everything is different from all the other friends you deal with.
