Birthday trip with 8 year old boy - recommendations?
cactus replied to enjoy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The extreme aqua splash session at the aquatic centre is brilliant. One and a half hours clambering over inflatables in the stunning olympic pool. -
Corduroy acceptable for school trousers ?
cactus replied to Dulwich Born And Bred's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Just buy any grey or black trousers that look reasonably smart and will wear well. Seriously, your child will not be singled out in primary school for wearing non teflon trousers! -
I cook mine on the hob for a few mins, so the night before I soak the oats in the saucepan, so ready to go first thing. Then when cooked, I stir in a lot of cold stuff - natural yogurt and honey, which seems to make the porridge easier to wolf down than just milk.

Where to buy - blank sticker album for sticker trading
cactus replied to enjoy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Some of the Match Attax magazines have them enclosed. We bought one a couple of weeks ago from the newsagents on East Dulwich Road, but I'm sure you'll be able to pick them up elsewhere. Ours is now full of Yo Yo Bear cards! -
Haberdashers' East Dulwich - 751 families supporting
cactus replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Concur with various posters, particularly with intexasatthemoment. Renata's post isn't particularly helpful, I'm interested in James's response, as it would appear that he's been very much involved in both Harris Primary bids. -
I've stored your number for future reference, but I suggest you advertise your services a bit more clearly, ie, babysitter available.

Oh dear, what a distressing situation for all concerned. I suggest he try Southwark Advocacy and Support Service (SASS) for advice - 02076191365. They assist men and women affected by domestic violence. I agree with Saffron around your friend seeking relationship or individual counselling. Also the abuse must stop asap as witnessing domestic violence is a serious child protection concern and the infant is at risk of suffering emotional abuse if the situation doesn't change. I hope things get better. x

Chicken pox vaccine: have you done it recently?
cactus replied to Convex's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hopefully you've already found a clinic and obtained the vaccination. If not Same day doctor in Wimpole Street have the vaccine - 020 76310090, cost is ?90. My sister and her partner are in their 40s and neither have had chickenpox. However they were recently exposed when a friend's 5 year old daughter came to stay at the peak of the infectious period. Sister panicked as they were off to Japan in a couple of weeks, so she had the vaccine post exposure and within the 3 day period. Partner refused. Fast forward 2.5 weeks, they've just started their holiday, sister is fine, partner very ill with chickenpox in a Tokyo hotel. -
Chinese New Year Celebrations with Kids?
cactus replied to newtoedf's topic in The Family Room Discussion
For the past three years we have visited Chinatown on the Saturday, rather than the Sunday. There are plenty of Lion dances going on, accompanied by drummers. The streets are decked out in beautiful lanterns and it's a lot less hectic than the Trafalgar Square celebrations. -
When was East Dulwich at it's best for you?
cactus replied to Otta's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
1996 - first experience of living with a boyfriend! It was in a tiny studio flat in the red/white house next to St John's church. We split up after a year and I moved to Brixton, only to return a decade later. -
I've toyed with the idea, but perhaps a little later on in life. What deters me the most, is the lack of long-term therapeutic support for the children involved.

Big Fish Little Fish - Family Rave in Brixton
cactus replied to pushpaw's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Are these events suitable for slightly older kids, 7/8 year olds? -
How much to pay for a school pick-up?
cactus replied to Mfichardt's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I've always paid ?8-?10 per hour. The amount may also need to reflect whether your neighbour is providing snacks/tea for your daughter. -
Countrlass22, I often use the text service at the bus stop, but I have wondered how much the service costs, I need to check my phone bills a bit more closely from now on. ?1.50 per text is way too much in my opinion. I don't have a smart phone yet, but I will have to upgrade sooner or later! However I'd rather not be fumbling with my phone at bus stops late at night.

How soon should I register for a nursery place?
cactus replied to sidmeister's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I would go on the OFSTED website, you'll be able to do a search for all of the nurseries in your area, then ring around and check what their registration process is. Of course you can put your name down for more than one, but as someone has already pointed out, a fee will apply. Nelly's & Mother Goose spring to mind in terms of a recommendation, but there are plenty of others. Problem with nurseries, is that babies and toddlers will inevitably pick up various illnesses from each other. I felt guilty when I first sent my 8 month old. He previously hadn't ailed a thing, but then spent the next two years with what seemed like a constant cough/cold. Nothing serious, but a bit hard going at times. -
It's the full show, really good value.

Awful experience at GMs hairdressers :(
cactus replied to Jellybeanz's topic in The Family Room Discussion
They charged me ?20 for my 8 year olds haircut, he was in the chair for a 15 minute trim! -
Secondary School Applications 2014
cactus replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'm struck by the dominance of academies and free schools in Southwark. I'm trying to be open minded about the pros and cons of this shift away from local authority controlled schools, but that's a different thread for another time. -
Child protection, at what point would you do something?
cactus replied to Pickle's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I would contact Southwark children's services duty social worker: 02075251921 and discuss your concerns. I've usually found them to be quite helpful, or as others have suggested, the NSPCC. I agree with midivydale, follow you instincts if you feel something isn't right.
