  1. AnotherED - investment implies risk, and that's what you asked advice on. Savings and paying down debt are not investments - they may be admirable and what suits you. A 3-4 year time frame makes it (investment) more risky too. Cautious people on the whole don't make much money with their spare money but they don't make that much of a loss (except to the extent that inflation eats into their savings and the 'opportunity' cost around dead spare cash and/or leverage). Given your plans and longer term goals/income expectations, I'd suggest you do your move now if...unless you think property prices are going to crash or be the same by your proposed step up date. or hold on do a split 1/3 off mortgage: 1/3 in some kind of investment vehicle(s) - 1/3 in cash.

Louisa - below say 40s, you'll see far more brown beer drunk among posher types than you will among working class lads/ladies. The revival of bitter and ale in pubs and me starting drinking them again - largely led by the gentrified pubs - has just reinforced how sh1te draught lagers are to me.

  6. I've found twitter a bit more useful this Christmas as I've been able to tweet West Ham regularly asking them if they've sacked our useless twat of a manager.I've found this vaguely comforting. Still awaiting any response.....either to me personnally or him being sacked.

  8. No Jeremy..Read all my posts , caveated throughout and making it clear about depend on risk appettite etc...also, of course, anyone with a private or emlpyoer pension is almost certainly doing this anyway..... Dripping payments into a FTSE tracker on a monthly basis over a two year period say reduces that charted volatilty pretty well too...doing it over 5 years evemn more so etc, etc
  9. ftse 100 up 14.4% in 2013, so ?40k= ?5760 profit in a tracker, give or take some admin fees..plus ftse 100 companies generally don,t go bust and you,d get dividends thrown in with a decent tracker......not sure if I,d do this now but just illustrating
  10. and ?40K in a FTSE tracker last year would have paid you a lot more than that if you cashed it in tomorrow?..just pointing out. People who make money with money take risks - is that for everyone, no - but that's the truth.
  11. Paying down the mortgage with interest rates at rock bottom is in investment terms a poor choice - if you are cautious and worried about your job security, then it is a conservative and very safe choice, but. I sense you are looking for a a bit more risk with potentially higher returns?
