  1. I think you're right, Bobby. She probably also liked the bit about wanting to lamp every guy who talks to her.
  2. There's the Ben & Jerry's thing on Clapham Common, they sometimes have an OK lineup. There's a few fests at victoria park... High Voltage, Tiesto, Field Day, Lovebox There are a couple of small ones in Shoreditch park too. Any events on in Hyde Park around that time?
  3. Hi plimsoul, I've asked James about these flats before, but I think it's hard for him to get an answer because it's not his ward. I have asked Katherine Pitt (Community Council Development Officer) about it, and she forwarded the query onto Tracey Downie and Shola Alao (Housing Management). Shola says that their "plan is to dispose of the site", which sounds rather vague. She cc'd Claudette Morris (the Officer of Projects), but she did not provide any more details. Nobody likes having a derelict building on their doorstep, but more importantly, the land - a decent sized plot - is a council asset which is not being put to use.
  4. Hugo - I understand your point, it's for the greater good, etc. But this is the real world. It's easy to stand from the outside and be idealistic, but your opinions would be shared by few in the local area.
  5. I strongly disagree that it will make it easier to get into the City. Having to change trains or use the DLR is not easier than a direct route. It will improve the journey to Canary Wharf if you travel outside peak time. But good luck getting onto an east-bound jubliee line train from Canada Water at 8:30am.
  6. Oh, that shop. I heard the lease has been bought by Selfridges.
  7. More trains does not necessarily equate to a better service. Most people want to go directly into central London. The London Overground does not go into the centre. I expect a lot of people will change at Peckham Rye, onto the (already overcrowded) London Bridge service. I'm sure some will benefit from the London Overground, but generally I would say it's bad news for local residents.

  9. Glad Khan won (even though he's a bit of a dick sometimes)... I thought Malignaggi would prove too slick, but I couldn't have been more wrong! I always felt Mitchell would be out of his depth in this fight, and unfortunately this was the case... back down to domestic level for him I think...
  10. DaveR, I don't think it's helpful at all. It starts with a claim that God has determined a universal set of human rights - i.e. an artificial construct.
  11. Steve, it's not the literal meaning of "paki" which is the problem, it's the negative/spiteful/aggressive connotation the word has taken on. Not sure why opening an AIDS clinic is a demeaning chore either... but maybe that's another example of "cultural relavitism"?? [ But it is an interesting point about people treading carefully around Islam while criticizing Catholicism more openly... see the article in DC's original post... ]
  12. I'm not even convinced there is such as thing as right and wrong, in an absolute sense. I'm sure most parents who subject a daughter to genital mutilation believe their actions are morally justifiable... and even benefiting their child. I'm sure a terrorist would attempt to justify murder as a way of fighting against oppression. A moral framework is something that is developed through experiences, socials norms, beliefs, teachings. It's not something we're born with, and it's not something which occurs naturally in the aether.
  13. Of course Mockney does not know about Sian's personal experiences. But neither can Sian speak for an entire nation! I'm pretty sure that not all Irish feel the same way about this.

  15. I reckon you're right there.
  16. I'm going for Paulie by UD, but hope I'm wrong. And Katsidis by late stoppage. And Chisora, also by KO/TKO (first or second round). Laborious points decisions for James Degale and Frankie Gavin. Happy viewing!
  17. Actually a few countries had already over-borrowed before the crisis (Greece being the obvious example) but I take your point. The dossier was totally lacking in substance... regardless of who cooked it up, anyone who agreed it was a basis for war is not without guilt!
  18. Mikey, I wasn't criticising your particular incident, just the assertion that the fines are a stealth tax. In principle the fines are there for good reason, the problem is the enforcement contractors who get rewarded for their predatory behaviour.

What would the tories have done differently? There was a world-wide recession, lots of countries are in the same boat. I actually think that GB did an OK job of keeping the economy afloat. > left in disgrace after taking the country into two major > wars - losing the lives of over 500 British > servicemen and women. The Conservatives supported the war too, though. Only the lib dems were opposed to it, as I recall. By all means, pull Labour up on their failures - but try to do so objectively...
  20. Mikey Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Parking fines are just a stealth tax I've also been ticketed by over-zealous traffic wardens, so I know the feeling. But parking next to a dropped kerb is forbidden for good reason, I'm sure you agree that access for wheelchair users is important. How do you propose enforcing the rule other than issuing fines?

I only remember commenting on your restaurant a couple of times, so not sure that it's usually me! It's just my opinion - I've nothing against the place, and if most people like it then great.

    EDF Drinks

I've only ever been to 2 forum drinks, but they were fun. I think every 3 months will work out just fine... and there's also the curry club, and plenty of scope for one-off things over the summer.
  23. Perhaps our local press may be interested in this story? It's potentially more intriguing than the lost parrot.
  24. Skye - I think because the 2nd ticket was issued on the following day, you may have to pay both. But you should be able to reduce the ?180 fine to ?60 when you tell them that you didn't receive the ticket. It is definitely worth appealing on that basis.
