Apologies for the wanky expression... mainly education, training, career guidance, etc. And a host of less tangible measures to stop kids getting into trouble.
  2. Yes, I think we all agree everyone deserves an equal opportunity in life. I think the argument is whether the best way to do this is through further wealth redistribution, over and above what we currently have... or do we just need to make sure that everyone has the same "tools" in life?
  3. True, but I think the point about expensive finance/credit is largely down to education. Partly to live within your means, and partly not to get taken in by high interest finance such as "payday loans" at 2000% APR.
  4. If you're at the Plough end, the bus to E&C would be best - you have a good chance of getting a seat too. If you're walking distance to Denmark Hill or Peckham Rye, the train to E&C might work out better.

  6. I have been listening to almost nothing expect my band's new demo, trying to get the mixes up to scratch. To the extent that I probably now lack any sort of frame of reference whatsoever.

  8. You still have to pay yourself... either in the form of salary or dividend. I was assuming any "maximum wage" system would take both of these into account.
  9. If you own a business, you still have to pay money to yourself, right? You can't just take it out of the company coffers. We heard Steve... you don't like banks or bankers...
  10. When? - Bad Religion
  11. Maximum wage? Haha, yes that would do wonders for the old entrepreneurial spirit! I seem to remember a maximum wage was in Jello Biafra's manifesto when he was going for leader of the US Green Party. Great frontman but... mad as a box of frogs.
  12. You've guessed it, woof! Is this yours? http://m.gmgrd.co.uk/res/146.$plit/C_71_article_1000859_image_list_image_list_item_0_image.jpg
  13. The record shop won't happen because of high rents and low turnover - especially during the week. I think a cinema could really work though - a small place with just two screens showing a mixture of mainstream and indie films would be perfect. A little concession counter selling coffee and cake during the day, beer in the evening...
  14. No "scolding" of the admin, as such... lighten up!
  15. You could argue that they should just be paid an adequate wage in the first place, but then how do you direct the money to those who need it most?
  16. To be honest the article raises some good points, but the bit which stuck in the throat a little was the implication that men and women are not suited to doing the same types of jobs. I really don't think you can make those sorts of generalisations.

But isn't that what "government handouts" are for? Aren't family/housing benefits a valid form of wealth distribution? Although there is obviously inequality of access to education, I don't accept that you need to go to a private school to make something of yourself. I think people's views are being skewed by the situation in the local area where parents feel that the local state schools are not viable... but it's not the case everywhere. I know it's an unpopular view, but I think one of the toughest hurdles is parents (and therefore their kids) who have no aspirations and don't take education seriously.

  19. I don't get it. What's with the removal of the google streetview image?

Using streetcar might be more environmentally friendly than owning your own car, if it effectively discourages you from using a car - because it costs money every time. But if you already use your car only occasionally... I don't think the argument stands up.
  21. I think it's just to do with making a fresh start... a clean break. Letting everyone know that the place has changed, and encouraging people who may not have been customers previously.
  22. Did I say that? I thought I was quite careful in highlighting my "if" and "then" keywords.

That's a good analogy David. I would assume that it is going towards a "good thing". If I subsequently found that Oxfam were spending money on "not good things" or "unnecessary things", then I would possibly ask for an explanation. I may also decide not to donate to them again.

I'm saying if someone was selling it who was not genuinely in need, then they would be abusing the trust. Hence my original statement that people have the right to question what the money is going to.
