  1. I know canaries are conventionally kept in cages, but do you think it is possible to house train them?
  2. I think the questions are a strange mix of local issues and national/ideological ones. Perhaps we should focus on the latter at this point in time?
  3. This does seem to contradict what James Barber has told us. He said that it wasn't financially viable, and instead they were pushing for an SMS based service. In principle I am not opposed to more "redistributive" taxation, if it means our country's economy will benefit, and we will get better public services. In your opinion, could we possibly suffer from a loss in income tax revenues, by increased salary restrictions and higher tax bands?
  4. Why didn't the estate agent tell us there are planes in the sky over London???!!!
  5. That's irrelevant Sidhue, it was an investment. A pretty good one, actually.
  6. My interpretation of her answer was that salaries of private companies should not be capped (and quite rightly so IMO). However, rather strangely, it does sound to me as though she believes Barclays were bailed out by the government.

Narnia, I believe *Bob*s score is inversely proportional to how interesting/impressive the story actually is. In doing so, he is implying that the various sightings of minor celebrities reported on these boards - usually with much excitement - are in fact petty and mundane.

Narnia - I think you really haven't got the hang of Bob's scoring system...
  9. It's no worse than other parts of London.

I saw "Nasty Nick" on a bus a while ago. How many points is that worth?

    Poverty

Let's face it, it is a bit of a daft article. Does it come as a surprise to anyone that if a woman has 11 kids, and doesn't have any money, they might struggle to get by? I'm actually quite surprised she can afford ?350 pw on food, and the top-end sky package.
  12. Canaries. Bats. Spiders.

That's where I live, I don't really notice it though. Maybe because the lounge and bedroom are at the front of the house. Or maybe because they're drowned out by the in-car subwoofers which seem to be all the rage round here.
  14. It's nice. Quiet. Not a lot round there, but a couple of restaurants and pubs on Forest Hill Road, and ditto in Honor Oak itself. Honor Oak Park has slightly better train service than East Dulwich, I believe. It really depends on the individual and what you are looking for.
  15. The little bastards ate gaping holes in our (nearly new) dining room carpet. It looks like the cleaner had been doing a less-than-thorough job in that room. After a long clean and hoovering session, a whole can of Raid, and moth-balls by the skirting boards, I thought they'd gone away. But then I saw a couple of them again the other day. If they are not careful, they will find themselves in a bloody war of attrition.
  16. I totally agree that the over-reliance on financial services was a disaster waiting to happen. But increasing manufacturing is easier said than done. With our high-wage economy, it's hard to imagine manufacturing expanding much beyond the high-end or niche products we already produce. (And most of the companies are not UK owned...)
  17. To be fair to Huguenot and Brendan, there are 2 sides to the story. Investor activity must have contributed to Greece's increased cost of borrowing - the inevitable snapping up of CDS to cover risk, and probably some hedge funds holding naked CDS positions (i.e. betting that Greece will default). But it all started because the government over-borrowed. That's not saying that they deserved this, it's just stating a fact.
  18. Greece has been living beyond its means for quite a while. Yes you can quite reasonably argue that this has revealed a big flaw in the market, making it impossible for them to dig themselves out under their own steam. But the Greek government have to take responsibility for the budget deficit in the first place. Huguenot Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It should be illegal to bet against your investments. I assume you're talking about the GS scandal, right? It's not a case of betting against your investments (actually it is entirely appropriate to hold both long and short positions). The problem is when you're betting against your client's investments, or you mis-sell a very risky asset. But I actually think this is mainly separate from the Greece problem.
  19. I live by the tracks, but hardly even notice the trains to be honest.
  20. Phil Collins doesn't get enough credit? Au contraire. From wikipedia: "Collins is one of only two recording artists that have ever been a principal member of a band that has sold at least 100 million albums worldwide, and sold at least 100 million albums worldwide as a solo artist" "when his work with Genesis, his work with other artists, as well as his solo career is totalled, Collins has the most top 40 hits on the Billboard charts for the 80s" Here is a list of his major awards and nominations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_awards_and_nominations_received_by_Phil_Collins HOW THE HELL COULD ANYBODY POSSIBLY BE MORE OVERRATED??
  21. Never pay money for an old CRT TV, as you'll be able to get one free through here or Freecycle soon enough! And if you have something to give away, if there are multiple applicants then check their previous posts... as SMG says...
  22. This one's pretty emotional:
  23. Now Froch is threatening to quit the tournament unless he can fight Abraham on home soil... I've not come across a single poster on 606 or any of the boxing sites who thinks Froch should have won on Saturday.
  24. You've not managed to convince me! Especially given the availability of information these days, and especially the number of Poles who work/have worked in the UK. I shan't continue though - I don't want to be misinterpreted...
  25. I don't really understand the complaints of England being a "cash-cow" for the rest of Britain. There are plenty of poor areas in England too. However you draw the borders, there will always be a need for redistribution.
