They are both Mitchell & Butler operations, as is the Phoenix.

Some good ones mentioned here - The Doors, The Verve, Coldplay - all rubbish! I'm tempted to question The Snorky about his hatred of The Clash, but I'm afraid it will start the age-old "Clash vs Sex Pistols" debate, and I don't want to get started on that one...

So if I wanted to find some of these birds (for instance, next time my Mum visits), where would you suggest would be a good place to look?

Has the ED housing market reached the bottom yet ( II )
Jeremy replied to snorky's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I am inclined to agree with you, Lizziedjango. But like it or not, there will always be people out there who are on the lookout for ways to make a bit of cash. Assuming rents stay as they are, (and that interest doesn't rocket up to ridiculous levels) the opportunity to snap up a decent terrace for around 300k-325k will be very tempting for any potential investor. -
Didn't you ask the price first?! If you're talking about the place on L Lane with the "coiffure" sign outside - I'm pretty sure the prices are in the window. Can't think of anywhere else in ED which would charge you over ?20 for a men's cut in ED. "The Clipper" on Northcross Rd is fine for basic short back and sides, as is the Barry Road barbers. Can't say I was impressed with Headnizm though.

Look, no harm in poking a bit of fun, IMO... as long as there's an actual "joke" there, rather than just an insult...

I don't think things are quite as bad as you're making out, Lizziedjango. Buyers can still borrow around decent amounts, as long as they have a reasonable deposit. Yes times are hard and the average salary is sure to go down - but 120k is far too low. That would put a house (in a reasonably decent area of London) within the reach of a couple earning less than 40k between them. You shouldn't try to guess when a certain demographic will be able to afford to buy. You should look at when it will become financially attractive for buy-to-let (or "borrow-to-let") investors to buy again (ie when rental income will cover the mortgage, and then some). -
"East Dulwich skyline has been creatively enhanced" ???
Jeremy replied to Bony Fido's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
ibilly, that advert says "Room in Swanky Moden Apartment", not "Swanky Moden Apartment". -
Oasis classed as "Brit Pop"? It's not really a musical genre is it? More like a fictional movement invented by the media to describe the boom of 90s British rock. Seriously, they're just a conventional rock band... listen to their sound, you'll hear Slade, Rolling Stones, Beatles, maybe Sex Pistols. They're not bad in my opinion, there are some cracking tunes on the first two albums. I don't like Liam as a front man though... his mannerisms, attitude, appearance and singing voice all get on my nerves.

What!!!! I can understand U2, and I suppose Queen, but THE CLASH?? (although I will admit that their best work is not necessarily that "immediate")

An ex-colleague one joked that the four principles of OO programming were inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation, and to confuse anyone over the age of 45. I think he was put onto a "diversity" course after that.

Starting this year, I am offering lessons in how to use the debugger! Starting at a half-price deal of only ?595 (including tea and those funny biscuit selections which are exclusive to corporate catering). Roll up, roll up.

I wanted to see it actually... but I've been subjecting my girlfriend to too many horror films recently, and she's refusing to watch any more!

Bookshop out Card shop in!
Jeremy replied to Richard Weekes II's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I always think it's very strange to blame people for not supporting a shop when it fails (even though we don't think that happened here). A business should open up to fill a gap in the market and give people what they want. It's up to them to promote the business, and to offer services which differentiate it from online retailers or big chains (i.e. staff which know their stuff, nice environment, good selection of stock for buyers to browse). And they need to give customers what they want, not what the owners think the customers *should* be buying. It is naive to expect people to support a business purely because it is local. Richard Weekes draws a comparison with the music scene (or at least appears to be doing so). I find this an interesting analogy, as I played in bands in and around London for well over 10 years. You have a poorly attended gig, and bands/promoters blame apathy in the "scene", etc. It's complete nonsense. If people didn't come to your gig it's because they don't know your band, don't like you music, didn't know about the event, clashes with a bigger show, the promoter booked a venue which was too big, etc etc. Don't blame the public, take a look at yourselves. -
East Dulwich police station have selectDNA kits available
Jeremy replied to karter's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
eater81, you're great!! Having already established that this does NOT involve actual human genetic DNA, and is just a unique identifier, you still persist with your conspiracy gibberish! Secret genetic experiments (on my DVD player). "Gattaca" style genetic oppression (of Mark's fridge). "Fitting up" of dissenters (and karter's laptop). And who can tell what other evil madness!! -
A table football wouldn't be suitable IMO... it's a pretty noisy game, perfect for the EDT but maybe not right for a slightly quiter, more "local" pub.

That may be the case Sean. But it doesn't matter, if Alan is proved wrong on that one too, I'm sure he could still think of plenty of other things to moan about...

Who Is Going To Get The "January Blues"???

Need to get in as much skiing as possible, otherwise I'm desperate to go again by May or June. -
Who Is Going To Get The "January Blues"???

I never get post-xmas depression... we're now in ski season, my favorite time of year! -
Can't decide whether it's a good or bad day to hav your birthday on... congrats anyway!

The road has been called Ivanhoe Road since at least the 1880s... so it is almost certainly the original name. Unlikely it was named after a pub. Given the evidence, I think they had a very good case for changing the name. In fact, I think they probably had little choice! Go on Alan, admit you're wrong. You can just delete all your posts on the subject (like your posts on house prices). I won't hold it against you.

I'm cynical regarding the whole thing, but it doesn't deserve to be shot out of the water.

I never went in there when it was The Ivanhoe (I lived up the other end of ED back then), but the reports I've heard are not exactly gushing. So I can't blame Jamie for changing the name - fresh start and all that. Look on BeerInTheEvening... Ivanhoe gets 3/10, Hoopers gets 7.9/10. Alan - Why is it a shame that The Snug was changed to The Castle? I doubt it had been called The Snug for very long, and it was a daft name anyway! I think the Black Sheep changed name a few years ago too.
-
I live on Hooters (Formerly Ivanhoe) Road! The "East Dulwich, SE5" address does stick in the throat a little. But I'm not sure the name change is a symptom of this. A few pubs in Camberwell have changed names over the last few years, as have (seemingly) most of the pubs in East Dulwich and Herne Hill. Yes it is a fairly shit name, but no more so than "The Magnolia" or "The Florence"!
