  1. Petitou is vegetarian - nice breakfasts
  2. Life is Beautiful - my favourite film
  3. In my humble opinion you can't beat those traditional little on the hob espresso makers. we have one at home and they're great. it's all we use. Illy or Monmouth coffee are both lovely.
  4. i'm looking forward to trying it out. The food is good and its delivered to your house -sounds perfect to me. Right now my favourite place is Tandoori Nights. Wish they delivered. If they did, it would be perfect. Definitely rate that as the best Indian restaurant on Lordship Lane. Now the Bicycle Club has arrived and can deliver to my house for when i want to eat at home. If i want to eat out I'll go to Tandoori Nights - win win situation!
  5. just read through this thread and how is it that a new tea shop opening can turn into (yet another) debate on children v no children? the place serves tea and (lovely) cakes. go enjoy the place - if you want to. some people have kids, and others don't. each are allowed to take their kids (or themselves if they dont have kids) to wherever they want to. people should relax a bit more and dont forget the most important thing -there are some nice cakes there, by not going because you dont like the kids around you are depriving yourself! go sit upstairs and enjoy them in peace.
  6. that's a nice positive outlook, wishing them well.... it's so hard to open up a new business. i say best of luck to them.
  7. i like the sound of it. i love tea -it's somewhere new for me to sit with my book - lovely.

    Summer reads

Recently read the following Half of Yellow Sun - really very good -would highly recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini- great book Restless -William Boyd -first one of his I've read, and enjoyed it a lot Douglas Kennedy -love all of his except the last one -The Woman in the Fifth -really good until the end -didnt much like it
  9. yikes - i didnt realise it was possible to get SO angry over a piece of meat! barbecues now are much more varied than an open flame and a grill on top. Brendan you're absolutely right - you can defo slow(er) cook meat in the hood -i've done that a few times and it's great. there is more than one way to skin a cat -or whatever the phrase is. slow cooking steak is nice, but then so is pan frying - both provide very different flavours. bbq it (properly rather than cremation) and you get a beautiful different flavour. i dont have any one way as a favourite -they're all nice. would try each way though rather than always eating steak cooked the same way!! why miss out on differing fantastic flavours?
  10. If you have cheap cuts of meat, slow cooking is the best way to make them taste good - if you have a good piece of meat, it doesn't need slow cooking (unless you specifically want to -slow cooking is defintiely a delicious way of cooking). Good barbecues are great - in Australia we would head down to Bronte Beach at the weekend, with meat, cool boxes of wine and beer, and put a coin into the gas barbecues provided at the beach. you're pretty mucc set for the afternoon. no need to cremate the meat either - you can vary the temperature with gas barbecues and wrap your potatoes up in foil and chuck them on too -beautiful. Great food, weather, drinks -all for the price of food you'd buy anyway at home, plus the 50 cents or whatever it was for gas. good stuff.
  11. Reading Half of a Yellow Sun. One of the best books I've read in a LONG time. would highly recommend.
  12. Louisa it doesn't really matter if it is small compared to anywhere else (and again might want to rethink your sentence -it's not just restaurants and newsagents). There are other people living in ED/Peckham other than black/white. I think this is being made into a big issue about race when really it is more, as Frisco said above, a case of the ED area, and along towards some parts of Peckham Rye, becoming a bit wealthier. That's it -people of all races are becoming less and less able to buy there as the price of property is increasing. It's not that "white people are becoming the minority, and feeling they have to gravitate to a certain area and stick together to live"
  13. just a couple of quick points. I think, Louisa, that your talk of ghetto communities and apartheid is way over the top. It's not jsut about race anyway and certainly not jsut about black and white. there is a large, and growing Indian population in ED/Peckham. SMBS does more than just 'sell some ethnic produce' -it is run by Indians. There are lots of other Asian-owned shops/businesses all along Lordship Lane and in Peckham Rye. There is a Sikh temple just off Lordship Lane too. i dont think i've ever heard of the term 'an ethnically mixed supermarket' either...?
  14. I went to this last week. Worth it for the ?9 it cost -good night. Apparently the week before was the best and really funny - the headline act was someone fairly famous. I would definitely go again - nice local thing to do and most of the comedians were good.
  15. hi all, havent come across any of these people but i got back to the house the other day and we had a note through the door from the neighbourhood watch people saying that there are two people knocking on doors in this area. one is a young twenty something girl pretending that she has been robbed and needs money (as mentioned above). the other is a guy aged around 30 or so who delivers a package that you sign for -although it's wrongly addressed. i didnt understand how this one worked exactly but you're then charged for it and i guess there is nothing in there. so you're warned not to sign for anything that you havent ordered and not to let that woman in, or give her any money. definite scams.
  16. Monica, these do look good. I would prefer the ones with the longer handles so you can put them on your shoulder. I have a great one at the moment that i use everywhere, but it's falling apart slowly so would love to replace it. While we're here and can have the ideal bag (!!) I would probably cast a vote for a black one, with white writing on it. Otherwise the white/cream ones just end up looking really scruffy after a while.
  17. hi all, wednesdays are fine with me too. nice mid-week activity and yes then just a couple of days to the weekend.
  18. Hi all, good to meet you all on Tuesd. 5th june is fine with me too and from then on the first tuesday of each month would get my vote. well done on getting the Magdala Katie, that's great. Ruth the blog looks really good too.
  19. Hello everyone, I'm still defintiely coming tonight. Had thought about the fact that nominations are needed - i suppose all in time. Good idea about the smaller groups - i think you're right in the fundamentals need to be discussed in one big group. We could start with a big group discussion tonight with a view to getting together a list of areas that need further discussion -these are then the areas that we could divide into smaller groups for, in the next session/s we have? Anyway, all to be discussed tonight i suppose! Ok 7pm isnt it? see you all there.
  20. On my walk to Bellenden Road from Peckham Rye station (strictly not ED -but a lovely tree nonetheless) is my favourite tree - i noticed it a couple of weeks ago. Not much space around it, but it's lovely. It's in someone's front garden and it's about two thirds of the way down , on the right hand side of Chadwick Road, towards Bellenden Road (from PR station). It's might be a blue jacaranda tree - or soemthing like that with lovely blue flowers.
  21. oh booking a table is a good idea. I'm Sandy -I'll see you guys on Tuesday 1st May then at 7pm. VERY exciting!
  22. tuesday at seven is fine with me too. looking forward to it!
