  1. I'm a 'Yes' but would be interested to know why so few other countries use AV for their parliamentary elections. I did read the posts on the last page wrt internal elections and so on, so to be clear I mean the election of local representatives of parliament.
  2. I wonder whether it might be a bit tough to go through life being called Boo, though. Lovely nickname or family name though, full of affection.
  3. Flocked spotter, people make disparaging comments on this forum about local services: restaurants, plumbers, service in shops, all the time. I don't think anyone has suggested they "don't need" HVs. There is a variety of opinion on the service that is provided, but if it wasn't wanted or used it wouldn't have provoked so much comment.
  4. Almost from birth for no.1 and 4 months for no.2. Both were / are frequent night feeders, and I much preferred doing night feeds in my own bed having scooped up Twosling from his bedside cot than having to plod next door and try not to nod off in an armchair. That said, Twosling is an even worse sleeper and more frequent feeder than his brother was, and I suspect at least partly because he became accustomed to being frequently disturbed by us (just as we were by him), and lots of co-sleeping. Don't think there's any perfect solution. Do bear in mind that your baby may find the change a bit of a shock, so you might want to plan the move for a time when you have the energy and resources for extra disturbances.
  5. Defensive responses to criticism on an informal public forum are also unhelpful. NHS staff are also entitled to express their opinions based on personal experience! Most of the criticism I've read of HVs (see my previous post for my personal views and experience of HVs) has had less to do with the heavy case load HVs have to deal with, and more to do with poor advice or unhelpful attitudes experienced.
  6. Hi Sarah-check the 'summer baby' thread. Good luck with your remaining pregnancy!

Bring on > the pooping foxes ;-) this really made me smile, thank you! Good luck nesting. For some reason, I managed to have the house in builder chaos for both my babies. Duh.
  8. Ruskin was dry on Monday. Not sure the council wheels can spin that fast in response to good weather!
  9. I went to the GP yesterday, as Twosling is a bit ill, and he deferred some of my questions about weaning to the HV. It struck me that it makes sense for the HV to be the source of information about baby care: weight gain, skincare, weaning, etc. ie anything to do with normal changes, questions and concerns about a healthy baby. GP remains place to go when baby is sick. There's probably a bit of cross-over (is the temperature to do with teething, or is it an infection?) but if the HV is good she should be able to provide you with up to date and specialist information which it's not realistic to expect a GP to maintain knowledge of. That said, a lot of comments on poor HVs resonate with me - the first time I met mine, tiny Moosling was howling the house down, and she casually said "oh, he has colic". Which luckily wasn't true, but anyway can't be diagnosed that fast! My current HV is both sympathetic and well-informed, and I am now really seeing the point of the system. In a practice where there is no longer a family doctor who knows ones children, a good HV who sees them from birth to five is very helpful.
  10. OK, cool - will get off my lazy bottom and advertise them in Classifieds. Hope you enjoy the hypnobirthing techniques, I'm a big fan but you do have to turn off your cynicism filter.
  11. Me too, hypnobirthing fab - really helped me in the early / mid stages of my VBAC. Also the practising is a great way to relax beforehand. Can you cancel order? Very welcome to my books and CDs.
  12. It's nice to have something for the slightly bigger kids, given how much there is for the littlies. We look forward to graduating to it soon.

Thanks ladies x Coffee, makeup and sisterhood - God bless 'em. Sorry that we rather hijacked this thread, though. As far as I've ever heard the only cure for a lark baby is a very dark room, lots of exercise and an earlier bedtime. Best of luck!
  14. Ha ha, Fuschia, that made me laugh.
  15. Yep, we were up. But just had first night ever of Twosling having one night feed* so can't complain. *Only because he's a bit ill** **So obviously I got up at 2 and 4.30 anyway to check that he was all right. (he was). But still!
  16. KateW Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Moos, that was me at 5.30am this morning... Yeah, me too - I wish my shushing were as effective on the baby as it is on me! I recently fell asleep with my forehead resting on the cot rail, one arm still reaching over and feebly patting. And a few days before that conked out in my cotside chair with my leg in a weird position: the baby went to sleep too, and so did my left foot. So there I am crashing around in the dark with one normal leg and one dead leg, trying to fumble my way to bed without falling over. What a chump.
  17. There is a particular torture to sitting in the quiet dark, sh-shhhing a baby who won't sleep when you yourself are so tired you could drop off on your feet.
  18. Rumpenstiltskin? What DO you mean?
  19. Indeed. But that does mean some stern forumite Cromwell is likely to pop up and dismiss us all.
  20. Can't believe anyone paid for the piano. We got our plinkyplonk teach-the-kids piano for nowt locally, which I believe is the going rate. And yes, once you've coughed up for movers and the gorgeous Irish tuner, it does start to feel as though you could have got it for less.
  21. Yes, but that gate just came out of NOWHERE.
  22. Hee hee!

Doesn't really make for much of a relaxing stroll in the park, though.
