  1. Many thanks for the offer James. It's working fine at the moment, but I'll take up your offer if problems recur Ruth

The only time I tried complaining was to ask for the bin (very clearly labelled with a disabled sticker and a request not to leave it in the drive) not to be left in the middle of the drive, and giving the reason), and the next collection day my bin went missing entirely! After that I gave up. I do have a bit of sympathy with the bin men, as many of the bins, including mine, are kept in the alleyway at the side of the house so it's not a case of just coming in to the garden. But our current bin men, as I mentioned above, seem more flexible than the previous ones. Ruth
  3. I can understand your the gentleman's concerns. Wheelybins in the street are also a problem for disabled scooter/wheelchair users when the pavement is narrow, or the bin is "parked" opposite a more permanent obstruction such as a postbox. But the opposite of the problem is that the binmen usually won't collect unless the bin is out on the street or at the very front of the drive - and if I put the bin at the entrance to the drive it would prevent my disabled husband from getting his car out! (I do make sure I put it at a sensible place on the pavement) However I have to say the binmen serving Underhill Road have vastly improved in the last few months. They no longer leave the empty bin obstructing the middle of the drive, and last week when I forgot to put it out at all they kindly retreived it from its normal place at the side of the house and emptied it anyway.

Except for the nuthatch that turned up on Sunday and proceeded to chase all the tits off the big feeder! RuthM

That's most likely the air ambulance from the Royal London Hospital. See www.londonsairambulance.com Ruth

  7. The real Tony is Tony Dowsett and his phone numbers are 8697 6663 and 07850 050858 Ruth (SimonM's other half)
  8. I put the glass in a plastic carrier bag, and leave the tins/plastic loose in the box. The refuse collectors empty the carrier bag and the box, and leave the carrier bag inside the box for next time. I too fail to see how anyone could stop a passer-by from dumping their rubbish in my bin, or tell which bits are mine and which has been dumped, especially when the bin is out on the street on collection day! Ruth
  9. arrived today (Mon 15th). Nice article about our WI

(ED - Greenwich - foot tunnel - Cabot > Sq). Keeps you fit and great for stress relief. How reliable is the lift? The only couple of times I've been to look it's not been working, and I'm not really fit enough to haul a bike, even a brommie, up and down all those stairs. Ruth
  11. Starting from the southern end of Underhill Road I take the P4 or the 185 to Lewisham, then DLR. Total journey time about 45 minutes once the bus has arrived. Mind you my current favourite if I'm not taking the car is to cycle to Elverson Road and catch the DLR from there. (This is where a Brompton comes in very handy) Underhill Road to New Cross by bus seemed to take for ever - I'm not doing that again! Forest Hill Station to New Cross is OK, but you've got to get to Forest Hill first. Ruth
  12. Mr Tanna retired from the chemist's shop last year. We bumped into him outside HSBC last weekend - he's thoroughly enjoying his retirement.
  13. Don't trust to feeling for the microchip to see if there's one there. The local vets or cat rescue places will happily check with a microchip reader for you. Ruth
  14. At the moment I'm not fit enough to do the full route from East Dulwich to Bow (where I work), not to metnion there's no showers at work. So if I go by bike I've gone for a compromise - cycle to Elverson Road DLR, train to Bow, and cycle the last bit. My plan is to gradually lengthen the ride to Greenwich as I get fitter. Of course I have a Brompton, so there's no problem getting the bike on the DLR. Are the Greenwich foot tunnel lifts really that reliable? The couple of times I've been to look at them they've been out of action, and Brompton or not, I wouldn't fancy the haul up and down the steps. But no, it's not dicing with death - there are lots of great back street routes, and rides through parks.
  15. There's a couple of trains from West Dulwich station that go into Blackfriars between 8 and 8.30 am, otherwise they go to Victoria.

  17. I remember first hearing the woo-woo when I was a first year university student in Cardiff in 1973. It sounded like an alien spacecraft landing! If you really want to go back in history, when did they change from bells to nee-naws? Ruth
  18. The air ambulance is bright red if that's any help. It is stationed at the Royal London Hospital where I work part of the time. R
  19. This is from the report for the planning application: The existing building is currently known and operates as ?The Rockbank Hotel? and has been providing accommodation for the homeless/refugees for some years. The hotel has recently lost its contract for providing this accommodation to the London Borough of Southwark and therefore is no longer viable

So do they have > different swimming times for people of different > heights, or do you just have to hope they don't > lower it while you're in there!? It's not just the kids session it goes up and down for, it's also for the disabled swimming club. SimonM and I used to go regularly - it's great to have a pool that takes wheelchair access and safe water height for granted.
  21. Current prices really are mind-boggling! We sold our three bedroom house on Bawdale Road in 1994, during the great house price recession, for ?92,000 which was ?10k less than I'd bought it for three years previously. It was a very nice road to live on. Ruth
  22. Wednesdays are good for me Ruth
  23. An excellent first meeting - thank you to all especially katiesa and Elfy. June 5th will be fine for me, and first Tuesday of the month sounds a good idea. I've just started the EDWI blog which you can find at http://eastdulwichwi.blogspot.com/ (I did want edwi.blogspot.conm, but someone called Edwin has already got that!). At the moment it's a default layout, but over the next week or two I should be able to make it look a bit more interesting and locally relevant. Ideas for improvement are welcome, as long as they're not too complicated. I've also created myself a new e-mail account at edwi (at) sky.com Please Katie and Elfy, could you let me have your e-mail addresses? Ruth
  24. I'm up for this too - so add me to the list for Tuesday please. That is, if you can cope with a real oldie (53 in three weeks time). I'm into various crafts, and gradually getting into cooking. Not so sure about campaigning much though - I need something to relax with after work! Ruth
  25. SimonM of this parish announced proudly that he had seen her when we were shopping in North Cross Road. I was queuing up in Pretty Traditional at the time so missed the excitement
