I din't feel there is a great mystery as to why people dump bikes; they do it because they currently can and can get away with it. Yup, guess many of the 'virtuous' cyclists are just as lazy as those alleged local latte drinking car drivers. There will have to probably be away found to impose on the spot fines. Dumping bikes on the path willy nilly could be viewed as a form of littering and come under PSPOS. Local community/parking wardens could monitor with camera cars and start to issue fines. Draconian, yes but this could get out of control quite quickly, especially in summer months.

Animal welfare is a relevant issue as is the polluting effect of fireworks. I'd be happy to support a Southwark-wide ban on woodburners and coal fires but they really are another issue, in terms of this thread. Fireworks are pure human self-indulgence and as you know Mal they are polluting, but the animal welfare issue tops it for me.

I'd like to see NFNs (No firework neighbourhoods). They are not eco friendly, they are polluting. They can trigger major and costly behavioural disorders in pets. In my view not on a par with going to the pub or cinema. Anyone that objects to car pollution cannot possibly support fireworks.

Her brief tenure has also shifted focus from his many misdeeds when in office. If the whole country goes on strike perhaps that would force a General Election. We can only hope.

Good. I pass that way regularly so it will be interesting to see what happens next. On my own street this morning, a locked ( to a post) bike lying on its side, partly blocking the pavement. Perhaps it has been kicked over deliberately, but it is chained to something.

But on current evidence the wouldn't be parked like motorbikes, they'd just be left lying in the street. You see the difference is people with motorbikes mostly care about the equipment. It seems many using hire bikes do not give a fig.

Rah, There are already cycle stands there. How, precisely does marked bays or more room stop people leaving the bikes laying around on the ground? I think you know that it won't. It certainly does not make a difference to how Lime bikes are left on Lordship Lane. Even in the area described, across from Peckham Rye, there is plenty of room to place the bikes, one just gets the impression it is too much trouble for the user. Easier to leave it lying on the pavement, wherever they choose to dismount. I understand that your argument for marked bays is simply another way to achieve your agenda of forcing car users out, but I really do not think it addresses the issue here.

I forgot my phone or would have posted a picture. Junction of Barry Rd next to pedestrian crossing and entrance to Peckham Rye Park. A jumble/ heap of around 20 Urban Forest hire bikes strewn around the pavement. Unsightly, a hazard and just plain wrong.

The psychology of the speeding cyclist seems similar to that of the speeding motorist. In fact, I think the latter are often high-handed converts from the former. Rah Nx is already car free on Saturdays fir the market, no real need to make it so full time. BTW have you sold your own car yet?

Beats me why an allegedly socialist administration is spending so much time, effort and money turning one of the wealthiest parts of the borough into a traffic- free utopia, letting those on the fringes take the hit from traffic increases.

RX3, Am I right in thinking that Lime has hooked up with LCC? It is a California based tech company, I believe? Can you say how many fines have been issued against Lime bike users in Camden to date? How does the fining system work? It's not an issue in some parts of London (City and Camden for example), where they've marked out on street parking bays and worked with the companies to ensure that there are fines / bans for those who don't use them. The problem here is that as much as people don't like them on the pavement, many would not like them on the road either (loss of parking). Personally, I would make sure that every street had at least one space for a car club car, and one or two for hire bikes - on the road (not the pavement).

Jenijen, Having seen some recent reports on the effects of glysophate- the commonly used broad spectrum herbicide, I would advocate hand weeding or hoeing.

Or just issue fines for leaving a bike lying across a pavement or road. There are possibly enough community/ parking wardens doing their ticketing rounds as well as CCTV cars to make the odd fine viable? You just need enough of a deterrent to make hirers think twice about where they are leaving the bike and whether it is a sensible choice. Who or what is stopping a cycle hirer leaving their cycle parked neatly on the road... nothing really, no need for special bays.

I can see that the urge to populate road space with parked bikes might be a very attractive option for some, in that it further reduces car parking space. But, those with motorbikes tend to care about how they are parked, not least to reduce damage to the property they own. Seeing the way hire bike users are leaving the bikes and scooters randomly strewn around I think leaving them in the road might create more negatives than positives. Of course, much depends on the ability of those using the bikes to behave like grownups and less like toddlers.

Not sure that is the answer. If, despite marked areas on the pavement, bikes are just left lying around surely the same will happen on the road.

Does anyone know how much this particular consultation process is costing?
