Having looked the signs are identical. Southwark has placed a no entry sign at the start of a road on the basis that it leads to other roads which do have restrictions. Dodgy or what. By that logic you could place no entry signs all over the shop.

In the scheme of things, who cares? They won! -
Welcome to the new East Dulwich Forum

Many thanks for all your hard work on this. I feel so very lucky to continue to have access to this fantastic local resource. Just feedback, no criticism intended, when I click on a thread subject I cannot really read many of the earlier threads, they all seem to be drawn out into a series of unreadable long, thin vertical lines, with one word per line. Is this an equipment issue or how it should be? Sorry not threads, but earlier replies within a thread. -

Has to be said, fantastic match and amazing result. -
It just seems so incredibly thoughtless and frankly stupid, more akin to the actions of young children, especially the bikes and scooters that are left lying in the middle of paths. Unless it is actually mostly kids doing it? The state of the pavement outside Superdrug today was something else too. It is starting to look a right old mess.

Walking along Lordship Lane today, including side streets, I encountered five instances of pairs of electric Lime Bikes left in the middle of the pavement blocking it. Just not acceptable. Over the summer I have seen more of these bikes left lying around, blocking pavements. What is going on and why do bike users think this is okay?

A new record wait for an ambulance?
first mate replied to tiddles's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Totally PLC are buying into healthcare facilities up and down the UK. They are also partnering with other companies to provide healthcare insurance models. This is a giant step towards wholesale privatisation of NHS facilities. The prospect of an americanised healthcare system is deeply depressing and frankly scary. Great if you have plenty of dosh but dire for everyone else. -
A new record wait for an ambulance?

Thank you for alerting us to this. The news about Kings a&e is especially worrying. I do not understand how the NHS Trust would not be ultimately responsible and liable for every aspect of care, even if contracted out to a private company. Though pretty stunned that part of a&e would now be in private hands. If this is all accurate, can anyone working for the Trust, or in the know, tell us more? -
New traffic calming and cycle lane on Sydenham Hill
first mate replied to legalalien's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Popular with a certain type of cyclist, and in the minority, I'd think. Possibly club members. You have to be pretty fit to cycle up Lordship Lane and then further up Sydenham Rise. Hands up, on the rare occasions I have tried I have had to dismount and walk. -
Problem is the whole LTN model is partly based on a number of major assumptions the first being that most people will be able to cycle or take public transport to work, ignoring the fact that our infrastructure is not designed for this to happen. And now it seems public transport services are being cut. Another assumption is that if enough punitive measures and blocks are imposed people will stop using their cars. Surely the evidence is reasonably clear that this will not happen any time soon. Even less likely in winter, with street crime and Covid on the rise. Then there is the misguided notion that LTNs will reduce pollution. If approximately the same volume of cars is being squeezed onto more limited routes, that does not equal less overall pollution. Air moves too. The elections in May were not a mandate for Southwark Labour to continue on its merry way, I believe that result was a strong message to Boris and the Tories. If we truly want to tackle climate change there needs to be some really imaginative and subtle thinking. Not schoolchild activism or easy copycat application of measures that may have worked in a totally different context and location.

Well, I had a very close shave this morning on Lordship Lane as cyclist barrelled through a red light/ crossing just as I was crossing on foot. He would have seen me but decided to go through the red light anyhow. Had he hit me it would've been nasty. Increasingly, I am finding that many cyclists do not stop at crossings to give way to pedestrians and many ride through red lights without a backward glance.

Warning: climate vandals are back

Warning: climate vandals are back

Rx3 you don't know for certain it is only causing an inconvenience. I completely trust that you think and hope that is the case, but if you find you need to get somewhere fast in the early hours and discover you have a flat tire it could amount to more than mere inconvenience. It is arrogant and presumptuous and playing god with the lives of others. The irony is that playing god with the future of the planet is what they are protesting about. It just feels wrong. -

It's presumptious. Okay, perhaps many should be less reliant on cars but on the other hand some are extremely reliant. I wonder how these activists decide who should be on the receiving end of their actions or is it just completely random? For those who are disabled or who have very ill relatives and might need to get to a hospital in the early hours, this is beyond inconsiderate and, as you say, potentially dangerous. -
If mess/litter/ damage is left within the curtilage of the business, it is the business that will tend to clear up or foot the bill for damage and later claim on insurance or against the client (ie a rock star trashing a hotel room). If a venue is hired out for say a party, it is generally the venue owners who organise a clean-up afterwards (factored into contract for hire and cost to the client). If they didn't the venue would probably cease to be an attractive hire option. In similar vein, the Rye is an attractive venue, pleasing to the eye and WATF spin this as added value in their marketing. I think the more general point you are making about the relationship between big business, consumerism and littering is worthy of debate but not especially pertinent here. However terrible the behaviour of the Gala punters there is a contractual mechanism in place to counteract that and which can and should be honoured.
-
You are fudging things Wase. Again, part of the Rye was hired out under contract for a private event. Part of the contract was to leave the Rye as found...that was not done.
-
George Orwell, as I understand it, part of the agreement was/is that the park is pretty much left as found (excepting yellow grass which we all agree will recover. Bottom line, this part of the agreement has not yet been met and that is unacceptable. We all know who has made the mess, they are customers of 'We are the Fair'. In a way that is immaterial. WATF have hired the 'venue' for a private event from which no doubt they have made a handsome profit. The deal was to clear up afterwards, which they have not done. Aside from that, this company has also made a big deal about their green credentials and 'care' for the community, so they should junk the greenwashing rhetoric and prove that with their actions. Shame on anyone who attended and dumped their junk, including ring pulls and ciggie butts...no excuse.
-
I'm not, out of sight is out of mind. Bottom line, they need a team of litter pickers to go over the whole site, inch by inch, and remove cigarette butts, cable ties, other plastics and ring pulls and screws. The former are toxic and damaging to the environment, the latter could injure a human or animal. The cost for the extensive clear-up should be met in full by the organisers. The Council must ensure the site is left as it was found or their so called green credentials are shot.
-
Has anyone sent this video to the relevant councillors? It is just not acceptable to leave sections of a public park in that condition. The organiser's clean-up has clearly not been thorough enough.
-
Well, if someone gets injured by a three inch screw going through their foot...more likely to injure a dog though, we'll know who to sue!
