It's become old hat for my other team, time to let someone else have a go (that being Brasil obviously!!!). I'd have actuially hated to see the generation just petering out win it, they didn't deserve to win, but probably for the reasons that they actually poerformed so indifferently, which was kind of self fulfilling I guess. If the players play like they care then I'd be delighted, but the talent isnt there, and so far from what I've seen the commitment to do, say, a greece, isn't really there either.

"Given the choice would the panel rather an England world cup victory or their club winning the premiership or (for those teams for whom that has become the norm) doing the treble?" Entirely academic question on both counts. Stevenage in the Premiership would be nice and is the most achievable of the three.
  4. So does that stuff really exist? I've often wondered, or did the rat drown shortly afterward?
  5. Cripes. Astronaut almost drowns...in space!!!! Compelling stuff. http://blogs.esa.int/luca-parmitano/2013/08/20/eva-23-exploring-the-frontier/

anyway enough musing on the death of football, as you were.

You say that Otta, but it's a very different world now and the attractions on offer are far more heterogenous, and you need to combat that in order to pass on that passion across generations. Perhaps the glamour of the big clubs can keep up a base, but what purpose does that serve when the rest of the league finds the business of business untenable. Even Championship clubs are often struggling to get bums on seats now, what say in twenty years time?! I suppose we might end up with that dreaded European superleague after all *sobs*

The final point being something else I agree on. I for one have lost an emotional conection with it; I got more excited by The Hamlet's 4-0 win over Cray than the Hammer's win over Swansea. The Football steamroller blunders on, thanks in large part to growing interest in the rest of the world and the noveau riche of E, SE, S Asia and Africa. But I wonder how it will fare when the increasing Helloisation of football causes passions among the grassroots to begin to fade. Possibly just wishful thinking on my part as I've turned from loving to loathing what the beautiful game represents.
  9. Tron? (I guess it would have been EPROM back in those days.)

I'm with SJ. We've been saying the bubble will burst for ages, and it will eventually (at least deflate anyway). When it does and the likes of Chelsea and Man City have to Slash wage bills at the cost of their effectiveness whilst Arsenal continue to turn a profit, he may retrospectively be seen as the club's saviour.

So the Egyptian army seem to have read the Baath Party's seminal work "How to go about tearing your country in two". Luckily Egypt doesnt have a massive unpoliceable border with a country run by various warlords utterly awash with weapons. Oh. On the plus side I don't think there is enough dissatisfaction among the majority to support moves towards brinksmanship that the Brotherhood seems to be pursuing, but it could be that a huge groundswell among the Brotherhood supporters would be enough for the conflict to take hold and spread. All very depressing and every increasingly repressive move by the army just makes it more so.

  16. Maybe the Heathrow Express is hideously skewing the results
  17. If she's a bit EMO and loves hustle and bustle then it has to be Camden surely? I used to go there alot at that age and always loved it. Glamourous auntie could then take her to somewhere like Gilgamesh so she can be wowed by sushi on dry ice!!

  19. excellent work, israel-jew conflation, racism, islamophobia *and* Godwin, quite a post. Although actually agree with the first sentence. But the fact that it is designed to speed up the mechanisms of a repressive occupation make that a somewhat moot point.
  20. Rorschach from Alan Moore's seminal, complex work The Watchmen. A profoundly damaged sociopathic masked vigilante who has excised 'compromise' from his vocabulary. If you've never read a comic book it's a great place to start ;)

  22. Ooh, my correct score was the Fulham game, me and 3% of folk. The rest of my predictions were shocking!!!
  23. Punk Britannia, three parter on BBC 4. Some excellent interview sound bites and a good overall history. A bit annoyed that somehow Britain was some sort of hermetically sealed bubble bar fleeting mentions of New York Dolls and Kraftwerk.
  24. I'll be honest. HAL9000's assertion that I wasn't allowed to moderate and have an opinion hit home, so I retired mockers....for the most part....
