Excellent and a Cole mistake to boot*. Sweeeeeet *the pun would have worked better on an own goal but I'll take anything.
  2. I'm not sure I actually understand your post quids. I'm nominating Chewey for you though. Furry (at least last we met), spiky, quick to anger, but true, loyal and steadfast. I'm sure there was a six pack of Stella behind the holochessboard on the in one scene.
  3. Aaah, Janet Ellis, happy days
  4. quite enjoyed attack the block as it goes. Developed a bit of thing for Jodie Whittaker which was almost immediately quashed by Broadchurch, immediately replaced by Vicki McClure who scrubs up quite nicely when not moping about in a skinhead or killing her dad!
  5. i quite enjoyed his reboot of star trek. It had the fun of the old series without eny of the po-faced pompus self importance of the follow-ups. It was rather fluffy though. If they can stay true to the feel, chuck in a little dark side spirit, lose as much cgi as possible, then things will be ok. Sadly the prequels managed to kill off that childhood part of me that worshiped those films, and in the cold light of day even the originals are basically just champion the wonder horse in space. But they could smear some paper in a toilet bowl, then take the script down to Chipping Norton Am Dram society and it'd still be a better than the prequels.
  6. ah, good old pen15 For a while it used to be sported on a car in the town i grew up in, though i suspect it probably moves about quite a bit. In fact I strongly suspect there's more than one around!

    > Is there a rule book somewhere that says you have > to start wearing beige at a certain age? You've obviously never been to Madrid, it's practically the law there to wear beige whatever your age. ANd my point was the older you get the less you should feel the need to conform to anything. Counterculture fashion is of course just a different way of conforming. >>"I think I am unusual. I don't generally* give a toss what other people want to wear or how they want to live" So good for you *although i've seen your smart power suit look for work (it looks good btw)

"And the great thing about being 40 something is that you can do the stuff you know you like, get nostalgic about the stuff you used to like, and still look forward to the stuff you plan to try." Nicely put. I might fantasise about the baggy straight flares I made from my parents' 70s curtains.

Aaah, there's your problem, after 30 you should try to be stylish*, not fashionable. That's just a fools errand!! *If you care about that sort of thing

"Well, let's see - getting into the spirit of the thread to date: you might as well just buy yourself a coffin and wait patiently for the inevitable." ..or emigrating as i called it.

i hate to break it to you, but your 40s *IS* middle-age!!
  13. anyway this one has been rumbling on ad nauseum for 6 years now, so i guess 5/10 for getting a good bite.
  14. But that's a different matter entirely ZT. If you come on here and say Capatalism is fundamentally flawed, then I'm totally inclined to agree, but short some concrete annswers it's not helpful as we live in a capatalist system and there's going to be a certain inertia in doing anything about it and some rather powerful vested interests arrayed against doing anything about it. Casino banking which is s small part of what goes on in the financial sector, is just a minor symptom. Greed at all levels was to blame for 2008, including anyone getting a mortgage they obviously can't afford who should bear responsibility for their actions. It's pointless just shouting 'bankers are bad'. Though they are mostly arseholes* ;) *joke
  15. I worked for a risk management desk for a couple of years, and my overall impression of our function was to help the departmental managers facilitate their traders to get around regulation rather than be listened to in terms of attempting to mitigate risks. I always liked the description of VaR as "an airbag that works all the time, except when you have a car accident". The bank in question went belly up and almost took a rather notable UK establishment with it!!
  16. ok apologies, is "Despite ZT's facetiousness" any better? I did economics at 6th form too, the closest we got to anything remotely resembling the real world was a site visit to the Ford assembly plant in Dagenham and a recruitment drive at KPMG where some over enthusiastic chap tried to persuade me to become an accountant *shudders*.

it's getting all confessional in here *I like beer, all of it, depending on the occassion, unless it tastes shit (badly kept beer, overstrength IPA) *Clothes are functional, i resent paying money for them and wear them all in to rags, so basically my wife dresses me. *Except jumpers, i love jumpers. *I like food, if a street seller is worth going to I'll happily do so. *I am usually bearded, but not out of choice, purest laziness. My weekly shave is usually painful, when will i learn. * I'm blind as a bat, I used to wear contacs but have been told not to by optician. *Hats are bobble, and team related. I did by an animal hat in Canada before they become trendy though. *Likewise with the music thing, though i'm not big on gigs and festivals are hell on earth as far as im concerned.

obtuse meaning at greater than right angles but less than 180 to societal norms, not meaning dense or obstinate. ok, there's a snifter of obstinacy in there somewhere ;)

Because in your 30s you should have the presence of mind and confidence in your own experience not to need a glorified tribe mentality to bolster your sense of inferiority and fear of the world. In other words, you should have grown up by then; dress, eat, and espouse opinions to reflect what makes up you not attach yourself to a movement that may ostensibly reflect some of them, or make you feel safer by getting others to do it for you. If tweed and plaid does just that, then fine. It's the thought not the signifiers themselves that offend, hence why I'm rather fond of Carnell who is deliberately obtuse rather than influenced by others.
