  1. There was an interest poll done recently, I'll see if i can dig it up, that had ukip voters as most disposed towards liking europeans and or thinking of moving there. The thinking britain is going to the dogs and wanting to leave it go hand in hand, and for want of anything else to blame, like you know, the implacable march of technology, globalism, sociological change, its an easy target to blame the EU, and think leaving it will cycle everything back to an imagined pre-immigration utopia. So not entriely ironic, though the lack of any integration that end is of course hugely and depressingly so. Bah too many polls about europe, i'll perservere though
  2. It's been used a few times on here before which usually rings alarm bells and sidey senses. this chap sprung to mind, which may or may not be a coinicidence. http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,722091,725231#msg-725231
  3. funny peculiar? as in why is some using a us-centric term beloved of mastabatory internet trolls who fantasise about going postal, use the n word alot, immerse themselves in self-contradictry conpiracy theories, and obsess about cabals and agendas that ususally boil down to 'them thar jews'? Yeah, hilarious!!
  4. I've had some fun with the canvassers tying to teach me the political landscape here. "we're the republican party" - oh cool, which ones are the monarchists then? "we're for a strong ireland" - really? I was hoping to vote for the party seeking to undermine it. I'm none the wiser as far as differentiating the parties goes, but apparently having functioning sperm/womb and affiliation to the GAA are the sole requirements for local office, weirdly.

  6. Don't know if anyone watched Generation War (our mother's and father's) broadcast recently. Excellent german drama looking at WW2 on the eastern front from the perspective of a group of friends, of the personal moral failures that can add up to such monstrosity. A good review from the Spiegel here that mentions the German 'inability to mourn' that brings to mind Spain's inability to come to terms with its civil war. Here's hoping someone can make a drama that captures the imagination and prompts a national dialogue there too. Hopefully it's on some sort of catch up somewhere if you didn't see it.
  7. Can you imagine of Noddy Holder went all Yewtree on us. There would LITERALLY be no more christmas!!!
  8. Ah well, I put Trans Am's The Red Line on afterwards as musical antidote, and I reckon life's too short to listen to stuff that barely rises above the background hiss of the big bang. Crisis over.
  9. great xpost. Yes I have the same problem with COldplay, I still like parachutes because its got a few good tunes and they were young and guiless and kind of nice, and then CHris Martin sort of metamorphosed into this awful thing, such that I genuinely haven't listened to anything they did since. Maybe if La Piba buys a load in ten years time i'll give them a go, especially as he's left the hippy hollywood horror.
  10. Their earlier stuff has that nostalgic glow about it, war, joshua tree etc are from happy days, golden summers and discoveruing what life has to offer, and it's hard to tease any of the music apart from that. I will damit to giving ATYCLB a first ever listen as i wrote that, so I guess it might have been rhetorical. It washed over me without my particularly noticing anything except the end of Beautiful Day making me think something about football was on (football focus?, match of the day prologue?) and Peace on Earth for being all Bonoey and awful, but the rest was pleasant enough without really making you want to listen rather than hear. Kind of Like Travis or Coldplay I guess.
  11. Should I prepare myself to forgive bono? I've ripped all my CDs and have snaffled up my wife's U2 along with it. Having turned my back on everything that pompous arse touches since (the admittedly excellent) Achtung Baby, a process kicked off with the cringeworthy awfulness of Rattle & Hum, my mouse finger is occassionally teetering over their latest stuff. So, should I or shouldn't I. Can I look past the man to the music, and would it be worth it at all? I'm really only asking this because it's a slow lounge week, and bi-folding doors and bogey aren't cutting it for me....
  12. a smidgeon sugar is acceptable on builders, i tend to find most brands just a bit too bitter, but on anything subtler you're basically masking the flavour. We always have a jar of Barry's available for visitors as it's punishable by death not to do so. Ah go on you'll have a cup of tea sure, you will you will etc
  13. of the 6th largest city, i've been known to mention this oft quoted stat myself in the past. Apparently hugely dubious as pointed out by SJ once upon a time and more recently auntie beeb. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-26823489 "The consulate defines London as the city plus "the south eastern quadrant of the UK including Kent, Oxfordshire and maybe Sussex too"." London's ranking, using the ONS figure and putting it on a list of these French urban areas, is so low that it doesn't appear in the top 60. Using the French consulate figure, of 270,000, London is only the 23rd biggest French city."
  14. Wooo, classic west ham, leaguewise started bright then went down the with the christmas decorations, but won the cup happy face!!
  15. But it's got SEVEN syllables there!!
  16. I helped a tourist struggling with two wheelie bags (one ickle, one big) down stairs to the C&D platform the other day. Near the bottom she started screaming at me, I turned to her looking a bit shocked and she said - 'oh not you, him' I turned to see her incredibly chastised husband standing sheepishly at the bottom of the stairs. I mouthed 'sorry' at him and scarpered!!
  17. But surely france implode unless they're playing in France non?
  18. I have bob hope of achieving this. Holland v denmark or ireland vs usa, that's it!!
  19. quote from chap from Kenyan evacuation "Nobody said boo. Everybody was very kind, very stiff upper chin, it just had to be done." that would be a double chin i guess
  20. it's impossible to ask for modelo down the pub without sounding like a memebr fo towie.....or a mexican bandit.
  21. i always think of tired as physical and overtired as when the weird things happen, strange irritablility through moodswings all the way to hallucinations (third hangover without much intervening sleep). It's just more obvious in children.
  22. not normally one to share these buzzfeed things but there are some gems here http://www.buzzfeed.com/mrloganrhoades/38-yahoo-questions-that-will-destroy-your-faith-in-humanity?bffb
