"There are reasons why it?s happening ? not excuses ? but we have to grind it out and make sure things improve." Funny how there's always an excuse then. Grrrrrrrrrr
  2. We say there's no such thing as clairvoyance, but here's a stab at the next one hundred quintilion years. *spoiler* it ends badly for us!
  3. I didn't like his debut solo as much as I thought I ought to like it if you see what I mean. I gather it has had better reviews, I just haven't had the time or money this year.
  4. Chrvches is a nice album, hardly world shattering, but catchy, shamelessly retro with some good songwriting, which is unusual in electronica. I'm a big Twilight Sad fn so its nice to see Martin Doherty having some fun for a change. THe above list was just one of a dozen or so writers top tens. The final guardian one was 1. Yeezus by Kanye West 2. Pale Green Ghosts by John Grant 3. Random Access Memories by Daft Punk 4. Modern Vampires of the City by Vampire Weekend 5. Overgrown by James Blake 6. Settle by Disclosure 7. Cut 4 Me by Kelela 8. John Wizards by John Wizards 9. The Electric Lady by Janelle Mon?e 10. m b v by My Bloody Valentine of which I've only heard no 10 (and have it on order in vinyl) and have 2 & 4 on a vague, to buy eventually list.
  5. Another case of projection Sue. You've not offered me anything by way of an argument, anything by way of evidence and you've liberally thrown out personal insults and are incredibly patronising when you're not being shrill, all the things you regularly accuse others of when they don't agree with you. (Yes poppet, I was reflecting your methods at you, but you failed to get the hint). Now, and without recourse to "you don't know what you're talking about", "duh", or "learn some elementary logic", can you back you position with anything other than bluster, or the logical fallacy "appeal to authority" (I was once a research assistant) please.
  6. crikey, opener 'basement torture killings' is a little claustrophobic isn't (name is kind of suggestive i guess). Ding a ding dang my ding a long ling long there uncleglen...without the tune ;) as it goes quite enjoyed it, and the immolation follower. Especially the occasional use of a triangle. But same rule applies, too old for it. It appeals to a teenage sensibility, but I'm just too old for this stuff to take it seriously (and i sincerely hope it doesn't take itself serioulsy); maybe without the vocals.... But all that apart, weirdly enjoyable.
  7. Horsebox, just listening to it on youtube (full album) I'm kind of out of practice, but it is good, and I'm loving the prog synths liberally interspersed. Ooh, its a bit rap Crystal Castles isn't it. But I have a self-awareness issue, I find it difficult to listen to this (and pehaps it's just middle age) without feeling a bit "It's rap but (probably) not as you know it." I dunno, sounds like all the stuff I listened to in the early 90s, with slightly chunkier bass!
  8. Days are Gone by Haim ? Guilty pleasure cheese. It's like Phil Collins flavoured fondue.
  9. our senses not so good at objective judgement Yes, the two faces are the same colour.
  10. I'm thinking sheldrake is a troll's wet dream, just* enough institutional credibility to hide behind, just enough woo to spur ire. *juuuuuuuuuuuust

Not so much a footy catch-22, more a footy cognitive dissonance. I'll get my coat.
  12. that or go 0-0, 1-0, 0-1, 1-1, 2-1, 1-2 and never waver.
  13. "Well then explain how you get so many football predictions right. Crystal ball?" She fell through a wormhole and rings them through from the future.
  14. "Is that not assuming we are only here to evolve/survive and ignoring the possibility that there is more to learn about ourselves?" It's not assuming anything and we're not here to do anything according to evolution, it's jusrt that we started at self-replication and we've ended up here. If a mutation gives you an edge it persists, if hinders you it won't. I'm not sure introspection was the goal of existence, merely a byproduct of an evolutionary edge. "It's all there and published by various scientific journals (peer reviewed)." Nice exasperation fabfor, but all we're asking is where.
  15. I've not heard of three of them to be fair.
  16. So the juries are out, everyone seems to have Vampire Weekend and Eminem in there somewhere. Was chuffed that Maddy COsta from the Guardian might have delved into my head for much of her list http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2013/dec/23/best-albums-tracks-2013-writers-votes especially the underrated (unknown?) local lass Serafina Steer. Amazed Bosnian Rainbows hasn't had greater prominence as that was my outstanding album of 2013. Nominations people?
  17. cross-post! uncanny, telepathy perhaps?
  18. Ok I've dug around. Firstly I can't find his paper on this, though there are similar experiments he's been running since 2001. Secondly can you provide links to the peer reviews that are happy with the methodoogy and support the outcome. He's claiming that "telepathy has evolved, like other biological abilities, subject to natural selection". Which sort of goes without saying as any ability would, unless the first single celled organisms had it. My issue with this is that for an ability to persist in an evolutionary manner it must confer some survival advantages. Given that it's so hard to prove I'd love to know what those advantages are. Guessing who's ringing you probably wasn't much good to Homo Heidelbergensis. Plus I can correctly predict who's ringing me 98% of the time. It's my wife.

I reckon if he just tells the players that they have to refund travelling fans out of their own pockets with a multiplier governed by the negative goal difference, we'll soon have that goal leakage shored up!!!
  20. There's a place in this world for maverick scientists pursuing unorthodox avenues of thought (admittedly usually in horror films). I mean I've often wondered about hive intelligence/consciousness myself. Termite nests are staggeringly amazing things and noone has a clue as to how they're able to design air conditioning systems out of mud, or able to have sophisticated tactical responses to threats. But just because an idea is attractive doesn't make it true, and you can't call people close-minded for not accepting what is essentially a gut notion. Telepathic dogs though, he may be barking *baddam tish* up the wrong (conscious) tree with that one!
  21. "We turn science into superstition when we refuse point blank to look at evidence" A bit arse about face. Superstition is often the stage before science demystifies or quantifies it. Science never refuses to look point blank at the evidence, because then it wouldn't be science. He doesn't do himself favours with "Most people believe in psychic powers because they have experienced them personally, or seen them in their pets", most people believe in god after all. I await the peer reviews of this with genuine interest, though I noticed in yesterday's news that it's already being dismissed in many quarters, I'll hold off judgement until the reaction is a little more measured. It's like that faster than light neutrino that had us so excited. Experiment proved it, and then they repeated it, nobody else reproduced it and two years later the original team reported faulty equipment had given rise to the result. Booooo, no trips to Alpha Centauri just yet :(
  22. Muslim scholars, theosophists, hell, even scientologists discuss stuff rationally. That doesn't lend it any credibility, it's all based on faith. And I'm still waiting for the evidence pumpkin. Without that it's just a faith based position, and more power to you for your quaint beliefs, who am I to belittle them ;-)
  23. I'd already been socially euthanised, most people I know have left, although all to the same place the blighters. I might as well complete it with total exile!!
