Man stabbed to death near East Dulwich station
legalbeagle replied to louisiana's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Some of the posts on this thread are really shocking. Just because we have a right to say what we like, it doesn't mean we should. Freedom of speech only works if we accept responsibilities that go with the right. And here we have a responsibility to our community, not to speculate or misreport, to ourselves to be thoughtful and reflective about the society we live in, and to this child's family, who deserve some sympathy and humanity to deal with the seven kinds of hell they must be in right now. Of course we can say what we like. But whether we should or not is an entirely separate, and far more pertinent question. No, this is not an RIP thread. But perhaps it should be. Would it matter, would it really matter, if we just held fire on the theorising and opinions for a day or two, and reflected on the dreadful inescapable grief this child's family now live with? There can be no sharper pain than that of losing a child. The rest is just noise. -

I wonder what the > response would have been? My response would have been - that's a shame, maybe have a word with the management if it continues, you have a right to walk home without feeling harassed/intimidated. And I still think that. But what the OP actually did was put people exercising their freedom to congragate and to express religious views in public in the same group as people who indimidate women for fun, along with a suggestion that it's ok to house these people, so long as it is somewhere else, where they can intimidate those from, well, somewhere else. It was then that I lost my sympathy. Though I'll repeat, (and should have said it at the start so fair cop), OP has a right to walk about without feeling hassled and should do something about that specific point. And only that.

Have to say I'm quite surprised at the jokey responses on this thread. And thanks Louisiana for reminding us that this is just not funny.........

Revenge of the turd monster - new blog post is up
legalbeagle replied to legalbeagle's topic in The Family Room Discussion
A quick update! Mumsrock have published my first article, ("the poignant perspective of poo") which I'm really excited about, and they liked it so much I have another one coming out some time this week. Woooo hooo! Can't believe I got published, I'm still very overexcited! Also, lots of people asked me to keep them updated with my blog. There is another post up here: http://beth-multuminparvo.blogspot.com Rather stupidly I didn't manage to keep all of the PMs asking me to keep people updated, so if you are interested in updates either become a follower, or follow me on facebook or twitter, or PM me and I'll PM you when there are updates. I won't be updating via this thread anymore as admin has to be fair to all the bloggers/writers etc so can't just promote me, and to promote all would cause chaos and isn't really what the lovely family room is for! Finally, thank you for all your support. I've had literally hundreds of hits on my blog from here and I'm really grateful. -
Thanks very much DC. Consider matter closed for admin, who I know is always busy! Liz

Awwwwwwwww! Congratulations SeanMcG and all the family. Very fitting for what is supposed to be the happiest Monday of the year!

DC/Sean - a suggestion re my blog so we don't need to bother admin. Could I go on to the thread one more time, tell them there's an update and that, quite fairly, I can't keep bumping up the thread etc, so would those who said they wanted an update PM me and then I'll be able to update them individually, and then I will leave it at that. That way I can keep hold of those readers who said they wanted an update and were expecting it on the thread, but won't bother admin or be unfairly favoured. Sound fair? I really don't want this to turn into a hassle for anyone and I do know there's a history to this kind of "advertising" and don't want all that to cause bother again.........

I think the best advice you've had so far is to ask the locals hubby is working with what they would do. I think local perspective is probably the best indication of whether this is ok or a scam. If they think it's safe, then it probably is, though I'd still be inclined to only pay 2 weeks at a time, and forgo some of the discount just to be on the safe side.

Re Sydenham and not preparing girls for assessments - firstly, they don't need to because girls can stay there until they are 18. Second, all the 4 plus and 7 plus assessments focus purely on academics. That only suits some kids and is very stressful for all kids. So if you want to avoid that, this is a good choice. Sydenham is lovely, caring, nurturing perhaps a bit more laid back than JAGS or Alleyns - I'm very impressed. I don't have kids there but its high if not top of my list when it comes to that time.

Thanks Sean. Admin asked me not to bump the thread so I won't. I'll wait and see what he says, and if he says no, then that's fine. I really don't want to be a pain in the *rse, I just wasn't clear whether it was the website or my blog that Admin took exception to, esp because the moderator was fine with just the blog. So I'm getting clarification. But whatever the decision, in whatever time frame he needs to take, is just fine. I'll be in no way annoyed. His forum, his rules, no probs.
-
Thanks Keef - not sure what DM does now actually. I'll see what admin says. I hope it's not an issue but I just don't know what the "rules" are here......
-
It may well do, had i kept all the PMs from people saying "keep me updated" etc but I didn't because Family Room Moderator said I could put the link up......but I'm happy to abide by whatever Admin decides.
-
It's a fair point BB but for some reason the follow function on my blog doesn't seem to work. It's frustrating but I don't know how to fix it and I can't afford to pay someone who knows.......I don't recall the food writer, did they make money out of the blog? Anyhoo I don't want to be unfair which is why I've asked.
-
Thank you! The Family Room awaits Admin's word on being allowed to see update.......
-
No no, not at all. Admin and moderator have been more than lovely. It's just that I put the link to the website that I write for on my thread and admin asked me not to do it again. Probably because it is effectively free advertising of the website which others have to pay to get. But I just wanted to check whether that also counted for my blog, since it isn't a commercial venture.
-
Hi Admin. Lots of people in the family room have liked reading my blog and asked me to keep them updated. Just so we're clear, it is nothing to do with the website I have written for, which I will not mention again. My blog is a personal project, and I am not paid for writing it, so it is in no way a commercial venture. Am I allowed to mention that I have written a new post and put the link on my old thread (revenge of the footballing etc etc)? Or would you prefer that I just didn't mention this at all anymore? Thanks in advance. Liz Liz

So. No one got sacked for inherent sexism, just one bloke for an ill judged knob gag. Phew! For a minute there I thought Sky might misunderstand the issue......

What supernatural/seemingly supernatural things have you witnessed ?
legalbeagle replied to KidKruger's topic in The Lounge
Ok so I'll start by saying I don't believe is ghosts. I have never seen one, never spoken to anyone plausible who has seen one, I am a "sceince knows it all" child and that's that. Anyhoo. A few weeks ago my boyfriend woke up in the middle of the night. He swears that a small child was in bed between us, and as he woke up, she got out of our bed and walked, with her back to us, across the room. He wasn't frightened, she wasn't malevolent in any way that he could make out, but he swears he wasn't dreaming and she was definitely there. Last week a friend of mine who is very "in tune" with ghostly type things asked me out of the blue whether there had been any remotely supernatural happenings in the house, because she could really sense a presence there. Last night I was alone in the house with my kids. I turned all the lights out except my bedside light, read for a while and turned my bedside light off about midnight. About 15 minutes later I went from fast asleep to awake and sitting bolt upright in bed, having heard, very clearly, the light switch outside my bedroom door being flicked on. Sure enough the light on the landing was on. And I know, for an absolutely certain fact, that the light was not on before. Both kids were fast asleep. Not freaked out or scary or anything, but a bit weird. So there you go. No doubt there's a perfectly good and scientific explanation for all of that. -
Revenge of the turd monster - new blog post is up
legalbeagle replied to legalbeagle's topic in The Family Room Discussion
It's fine, really. This thread started off with me thinking that some of the family room might find my stories funny, and then I got to write an article out of the blue, and lots of people were asking me to let them know how I got on with publishers etc so it seemed easiest to just put an update on here as things went along. But of course now someone else's website is in play it's very unfair to those who pay to advertise on the forum for me to keep mentioning someone for free. So Admin is perfectly right. And that's all I'll say since I've been asked veru nicely to stop putting this thread to the top of the page! (Though again, thanks for all the support, it has been just fantastic!) -

Understood. (Though I have pointed MumsRock in the direction of the forum, sung its praises, pointed out its incredible audience numbers and suggested they advertise on here by way of your VERY reasonable advertising package.....)
