  1. Actually, it could be a good thing that someone with such a dubious attitude has outed herself and effectively removed herself from any position of power or influence...
  2. Thank you for that fl0wer, very useful information. We will have a real/cut tree this year as a) we have no outside space b) we have no inside space to store a fake one! But we are about to move house (hopefully!) and I plan on getting a potted one next year. I'll know what to look for now.

    Have you you tried freecycle?
  4. Because it implies that people who were here that long ago chose to live in a "rough" area or were themselves contributing to that roughness. I too would take issue with that perception, but not enough to get exercised about it.
  5. Thank you folks. Would have been nowhere near as pretty if I'd tried that this morning!
  6. Just thought I'd share this picture I took of the Rye looking glorious in the sunrise this morning.
  7. It does sound as though we've not got the whole story as yet, but I would be very sad to see Pretty Traditional go (despite the fact that we are leaving the area). More information on the plans would be really helpful. I will certainly go in and ask Chris what is going on when I get a chance. I buy most of my fruit and veg from there (organic or not) and it's one of the things I will miss most when we leave. (Jeremy, I think I see your confusion - the caf? is called Pretty's and has been there for a few years - maybe 5, but Pretty Traditional is the green grocer and has certainly been there for the 15 years I've lived in ED.)
  8. I'm not whinging! I am merely concerned (and therefore posing a question for discussion) that someone's hopes and dreams, never mind investment, might not succeed if there isn't sufficient demand. Ever heard of market saturation? I have already said that I wish them well. The new shop is probably better placed than the other two for passing trade anyway.
  9. Four jewellery shops, and I'm not saying it can't, I was just wondering as it seems quite a concentration in a small area (particularly as three of them sell precious jewellery that's quite expensive). Hopefully it can. East Dulwich: South London's Hatton Garden ;-)
  10. Sure, Peckhamrye, and I wish them all the best. Just not sure how many jewellery stores the area can support...
  11. So that's three new jewellery shops opened relatively recently in ED - how much money is there floating around?! (The other two are on Upland Road - one precious jewellery which has been open for quite a while, the other a costume jewellery one next door).
  12. Am very pleased to say that the PO has located my package! Fingers crossed that anyone else with anything missing is reunited with it soon.
  13. Good post Medusa - everyone needs a little more tolerance and a little more respect (tolerance from those observing the children, respect from those who have them and need to ensure they behave well). The trouble is, we tend to notice the kids behaving badly (just a few) and overlook the dozens who do behave well.
  14. Yes, I started a thread in here (which is now in the lost and found section) about a recorded delivery item that's gone missing on Oakhurst (they put the usual card through the door, but when I read it, it said they'd left the item for collection - at the address they were supposed to deliver it to!). That was Wednesday last week. I went to the office on Silvester Road at 9am on Friday, they couldn't account for it and said they'd call when they'd checked with the postman. They didn't, so I went back and queued for ages on Saturday morning to be told the postman wouldn't be back till today... Today I received a call saying he's on a rest day and won't be back in till tomorrow (but at least they did let me know they can't do anything today). I gave them the recorded delivery number, and they've got an illegible signature on their little device, but no record of the number it was actually delivered to. So I am relying on the postman remembering where s/he delivered something almost a week ago... It's a birthday present from my elderly father, who is rather upset that I haven't got it yet. I suspect that there are a few temporary postmen/women at the moment, to cover the Christmas post.
  15. Maybe posting your make of car might help? Sorry this happened, and hope it doesn't cost too much to get fixed.
  16. There are also the people who always have to have the last word, regardless.

    The Patch

It was listed in a Time Out article this morning, in an article about rejuvenating London's pubs (though The Ivy House was featured too, higher up) but I can't find the article on the TO website to post a link. But it mentions locally sourced food and a hydroponic growing system. Shame the website is down so they can't make the most of the publicity...
  18. Aren't most of the junctions on Barry Road bad to pull out of? I regularly come out of Tyrell Road, turning right onto Barry Road and edge out very slowly checking both ways carefully. Trouble is, you can't see properly until you're out far enough to be in someone's way, be they car, motorcycle or bike. Not a lot that can be done about that unfortunately.
  19. I was there too, and yes it was an excellent display yet again (though I think last year's might have been a smidge better). I did think it was a lot busier than normal though. We weren't that far from the gate and it took 20 minutes to get out. Mr Twirly and I lost the friends we were with moments after entering the park (and we've never had to queue to get in before). I am wondering if it's becoming a victim of it's own success - they hire the team that did the Olympics fireworks, plus it's free whereas a lot of others in South London charge. Is it possible that it will become impracticable over the next year or two? It wasn't cold though - too many people there for it to get cold!
  20. It does rather sound as though the other MPs weren't aware that she was even standing behind them. They don't have eyes in the back of their heads, and were focussing on what was going on in front of them. If they'd realised, chances are they'd have offered. And if she'd wanted a seat, she'd have asked. Storm in a tea-cup, and a slow news day...
  21. If you know them, then I doubt there is a wrong time. But it's a bit different calling on a complete stranger at that time of the morning.

    The Patch

Just had a look at the menu, which looks interesting, though the name of one of the desserts "Warm chocolate nemesis" made me laugh - sounds like a posh "death by chocolate"! I see they have a forum section too...
  23. Be aware that it is still chaos on the trains, and no one seems to know what is going on. I just wasted an hour at London Bridge, as the 14.25 to Beckenham was on the board as on time, but just disappeared. Then the14.40 platform was announced, so we all piled on. Sat there till 3pm with no announcement as to what was happening. I got off he train to find out, but none of the dozen or so men in uniform on the concourse had any idea apart from that they were "waiting for a driver"! And no one seemed interested in finding out. I understand that rolling stock and staff are not going to be in the right places, but for goodness sakes let us know what is going on, and don't announce trains that don't have drivers!
