  1. Can you not store your belongings in their loft, if they have one? When I renovated my flat, about 5 years ago, it cost us about ?60 a month to store things, and that wasn't a very big storage room - boxes with belongings, not furniture. Have a good clear out first and see what you can get rid of first.
  2. My guess is that whilst it's probably not common, it's probably not that unusual. Why are you so surprised?
  3. Very sensible catma - a friend of mine had what appeared to be a minor cut before Christmas, didn't get it seen to and within a couple of days was admitted to hospital with a bad infection and an arm full of pus. He's just come out after a month long stay and a skin graft.
  4. Definitely get legal advice. Hope you get it sorted.
  5. If you have no luck on here, try Freecycle.
  6. Main roads appear to be fine, you might want to walk your bike off the side roads katanita, as they were still icy earlier, and I doubt that will have changed much.
  7. I looked online and saw that there were delays/cancellations at both Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye, so caught the 37 to Brixton (which was only slightly delayed) and the Victoria line from there to Green Park - was in work about 10 minutes later than usual, so can highly recommend this route if you need to get into central London. However, the station at Brixton probably had twice as many people entering it as normal - still managed to get a seat though. Think people getting on further up might have struggled though.
  8. Tulse Hill is quite a way from East Dulwich - you might be better off on the Herne Hill forum, or an even more local one if there is one?

Agreed, but maybe it is less of a disaster because of the warnings? We've all seen less snow than this fall in the past and result in chaos. This time, everyone has been a bit more prepared.
  10. I've just come back from doing my weekly shop in ED (thought I'd get it in today in case we get a lot!). Main roads are clear (Lordship Lane), as are the pavements (just wet) in those areas. There is a little snow settling on roads and pavements that have a lesser degree of traffic have a little snow (such as Northcross at the moment). Side road pavements (I'm on Oakhurst Grove) are quite slippery due to the fine nature of the snow - I wore my walking boots and it was OK though. I suspect that the side roads will be quite slipper later on though, and don't plan to take my car out today. HTH
  11. Surely there is a difference between a missing cat/dog and adverts for events that have happened? The former could be useful in helping to find the missing animal for weeks afterwards (even if it is deceased by the time it turns up in the back of someone's shed, for example). Adverts for an event that in the past are useless, and it is the responsible thing to take them down.
  12. Agree with Sue about the main roads, but the side roads tend to have impacted snow and be like ice rinks, so they may be able to get to ED, but whether they will be able to turn into a side road and actually park is another matter altogether! As for public transport, generally the trains are best avoided, but usually the buses run. It was about 4 years ago I think that even the buses packed up, as the roads weren't safe (no one had bothered to salt of grit - they tend to be better now), and either 2 or 3 years ago when we had lots of snow and I was working in Blackfriars, I was able to get in every day on the 63 when a lot of my colleagues weren't able to at all. Even this morning when it was just very cold, the trains were up the spout. However, it all really depends on the type of snow we get, how quickly it settles and where, and particularly how wet it is. Even when it snows makes a difference - during the day, and traffic will keep the roads clear, overnight and it doesn't.
  13. Hope you feel better, and thank you for posting about people's generosity and helpfulness - sometimes it all seems like gloom and doom on here.
  14. There were two foxes in our downstairs neighbour's back garden getting it on today. They were at it for ages, with several attempts, then "stuck" together for quite a while too (and looking most aggrieved about it). Totally silent though. Hoping they will bring their offspring to frolic cutely later in the year.
  15. No, but it would benefit the workers at the new US embassy which is being built at Nine Elms and is due to be finished in 2017.
  16. Yep, merry Christmas everyone!
  17. Totally understand your annoyance! Despite being on the mail preference list, I continue to get monthly letters from Virgin Media, which I've taken to posting back to them... I would be sorely tempted to save up my junk mail for a week or two and then deliver it all to the estate agents and see how they like it!

I think the poster meant TK Maxx - does discounted, end of range clothes and household stuff. There's one in Brixton, but they are big and wharehouse like, so no space for one in ED. But between you, thanks for the laugh :)
  19. There's a good whisky shop up by the British Museum, Royal Mile Whiskies: http://www.royalmilewhiskies.com/viewindex.asp?article_id=shop_london I've asked their advice before when buying for my Dad who is rather particular. Helps to know what he likes though, so let them know what he normally drinks. I usually get my Dad something from Islay as he likes the peaty ones.
  20. What Sue said! I was even further back in the queue, and there were plenty of people behind me too.
  21. Darn it, was going to try for some too. 4000 clearly not enough
  22. Why does it have to be supermarkets/chains or independent shops? Surely both can co-exist and we can all use both ? unless there are some people who never want to leave the ED environs? There are plenty of chains in Peckham and Brixton, and if you want lots more, the West End and various other shopping centres are no more than an hour away. I think ED has a nice mix of smaller chains and independents ? a good, mixed high street. Many bland towns are probably quite envious. As for doing the weekly food shop, I shop in the big Sainsbury?s, the Co-op, Iceland, Pretty Traditional, the fish stall on Saturdays/Moxons and SMBS depending on what I need and when. My regular Saturday shopping route takes in the Co-op, SMBS and Pretty Traditional with a possible stop at the fishmonger, and needn?t take more than an hour or so ? about the same length of time it takes for me to take the car or bus up to Sainsbury?s. Admittedly I?m shopping for 2, not a family of 4 or more, but all the same, it doesn?t take that long. I also sometimes find the local shops to be cheaper than the supermarkets, depending on what I?m buying, of course. As for what ED could do with, the suggestion of a decent crafts supplier is the one that resonates with me. Haberdashery, art supplies, craft supplies, am sure it could do quite well here. But not a Hobbycraft!
  23. I hope that the police follow this up properly - clearly the dog is dangerous and should not be off the leash whilst out in public. Sorry to hear about your experience, and well done for keeping your calm as long as you did. Many other people would have had a far more vituperative reaction.
  24. Since I?d missed my usual Victoria service this morning, I thought I?d try going via Canada Water to Bond Street, just to test it out. Luckily I can check the status of the Jubilee line, and it seemed to be running OK when I was at Peckham Rye, so risked it. The Overground train arrived more or less on time, but picked up a 6-7 minute delay in its journey to Canada Water. The train was fairly full, but not totally crammed (though not far off it). Completely agree about the interchange there ? why on earth did they just install just one up and one down escalator? Took ages to get down to the Jubilee line, thus compounding the slight delay. The Jubilee line was, of course, totally rammed. And since I?d had to go further east to get it, I was on it for longer than if I?d taken the train to London Bridge. I got to Bond Street just after 9 ? would have been dead on time if the train had run on time. One thing that I did notice, as I watched the 8.24 to London Bridge depart was that whilst the front couple of carriages were completely rammed, the ones further down the train were quite civilised, possibly even seats available. If anyone does have to travel to LB (as I used to) and misses the SLL which was usually quite empty at Peckham Rye (I normally got a seat on the 8.26) though not by the time it got to South Bermondsey (hate to think what the LB trains are like by the time they get to there now ? can anyone actually get on them?!), just move down the platform. Despite the long interchange at LB at the moment (particularly since the platforms are crowded with scaffolding), I think it would actually be better for me to go that way during rush hour if I have to ? less time on the Jubilee line. Whilst it might not be great for me, I can see how this new line does open up lots of additional travel opportunities for people, and if I ever have to travel to north or SW London, it could be useful. It?s just a shame to have lost what was also a very useful service.
