  1. Alieh, Yes the idea of HO being half the price confused me a bit as it was not at all my understanding. However, I wonder if the three beds you are looking at are much bigger than the ED ones? Then, even if they are the same or similar price once you factor in the doing up, they could well be much cheaper per square foot which is the only real measure. Is that possible?
  2. Toomuchchocolate - I'd raise that as an issue. Those are basic mistakes and you will be doing the individual a favour in life and career terms if he/she can sort it out. Tempted to point out the grammar mistakes on this thread alone but am afraid of my own subsequent ones!
  3. In addition to the options mentioned (express, share the night with your husband, co-sleeping etc.) I would add - don't run around (as I constantly did!) during the day, don't have legions of people round, don't make work for yourself and don't stress about a mess in the house, depressing though it is. Also, if you can sleep when the baby sleeps, great (I never could but do try..) as the sleep deprivation mothers put up with is inhumane in my view and the sort of thing that subsequent more assertive generations simply will not accept.
  4. in addition to those mentioned, King George's Park in WW has a fabulous playground. It's next to the Southside centre so if I go, I park in Waitrose (2 hours if you spend 15 pounds), grab the food and go to the park for the rest of the time. Tennis courts and nice gardens too.
  5. A friend wants me to advertise her flat but I am reluctant to do so now after posts about "tenant scams". Can anyone elaborate? It would be good to know what these scams are - stealing furnishings is the only one I can think of.
  6. As I understand it, foreign investors have flooded into prime London and those luckly enough to own in those areas have taken advantage of it to sell and move to the new UK prime areas such as Fulham, Clapham and Battersea/WW. A lot of Claphamites have mvoed into SE London in one shape or other. When the Euro crisis finally unwinds, and the foreign investment leaves prime London, does the whole pattern reverse itself? I really don't know but it worries me that the reversal, if it comes, could combine with the awful UK outlook to generate a massive property crash. Now, you may say, that would not be such a bad thing. I'm not sure that the magnitude I'm anticipating would be a good thing for anyone really, save cash rich developers. What do you think Can anyone better qualified than I am explain what is likely to happen over the next few years? THank you
  7. Either way, it (and she) was/were hilarious and v witty.
  8. Oh thank you! It was hilarious.
  9. Would someone direct me to a very funny thread initially posted by a girl from or purporting to be from the US and coming to live in ED shortly. I am really curious to know how it all developed and whether it was real, she came here etc.. Thank you.
  10. Wld love. Would be quite fascinated to know the routines and to establish how far off them I am (compared with my dreams!)
  11. Have a look at childsown.com? I personally don't have the skills but I thought someone on the forum might fancy it and could work from home doing it?
  12. So prices per sq foor are half in HO compared with ED? Wow, that is quite a difference for being five mins up the road. How are the schools in HO though?
  13. Thank you very much everyone, some interesting ideas there to digest.
  14. I am wondering whether more people are being tempted to move out by the gap between ED and eg Kent. The latter has been pretty stable while as we all know, ED has gone a bit mad price wise. It is impossible to know empirically many people would have posted on this year a year or two years ago but it just "feels" a lot currently. However there isn't very much on the market or at least not in my price range, which may be a different thing admittedly. Maybe more will come on over the summer with a view to moving by the end of the year.
  15. Thanks Jimmyv - scary for your daughter and anyone else around. Especially the second attempt which really makes it look malintentioned. Obviously your daughter wanted to get away so no number plate I imagine. English speaking or foreign? Any sort of description. How absolutely horrible.
  16. Southwark planning are separate from matters covered specifically by statute. PWA matters are a question between the two householders affected whereby one has to "reassure" the other that the work done will not affect detrimentally the status quo, hence why condition notes are also made. I would have expected your architect/solicitor to have gone through all this with you. Your neighbours may cause trouble/object if their rights have not been observed, he Ce perhaps the link back to the planning process, concertina-ed by the firm that contacted you.
  17. HS - edited now to clarify. You were quite right- it was ambiguous. Thank you.
  18. Let me clarify as it seems you misunderstood, HS. My point is simply that school rules exist for a reason and that we should not remove children arbitrarily wih gay abandon as Smiler (not the OP who takes a different approach) said she would do. I think the OP acted with dignity and integrity. I think Smiler's approach of being honest with the school has integrity too but it is also unhelpful to the schools that we are all supposed to be supporting. Lastly, removing and lying is just pathetic, but no one has suggested that. Don't worry about the misunderstanding - these things happen and often with typing as the meaning is less clear.
  19. I don't think it is a scam but I do think that anyone accusing businesses of such should be careful not to name them!
  20. How long does it take each night? Unfortunately many parents like to boast about how much hw children get so the schools ladle it on. Also if there have been disruptions from naughty children the class will not have made the progress the teacher wanted to make so more will have to be done at home by the others.
  21. Smiler, unfortunately if everyone followed such a selfish and inconsiderate path, (as the one you are suggesting) there would be anarchy in the school. There are rules in society and it is mature and sensible to follow them as opposed to breaking them being independent, assertive or "more cool", as I heard some fool saying the other day. Sunil, having said this, I would be insulted by the implication that you would lie, in that last paragraph. I would send a lofty note back saying that I am disappointed she has had previous experiences that led her to feel the need to include it as you had always been totally straight with the school. I would say that I was insulted by the implication, but that is just me(!). Hope your daughter enjoyed her week anyway and managed to do some good practice.
  22. I have had one which was painful and terrifying as I felt that my body was shutting down. It didn't know how to cope. My sympathies. I was walking in the sunshine when I occurred and I sprinted home, closed the curtains and slept for a few hours solidly. I was totally focussed on getting away from the sun.
  23. Nightmare. Literally. You must be exhausted. What have you tried? Maybe we were lucky but ours slept for ten hours from about two months/ nine weeks onwards. Those weeks were bad enough. We initially followed a schedule of 7am wake up and we stuffed as much as possible in for every feed. Maybe that is the difference - are you feeding the baby yourself or formula? They tend to sleep longer on the latter as it takes longer to digest. Once the girls slept through, we let them do their own thing and wake when they chose or needed, more or less, but quite tentatively as I was worried they regressed. Can you avoid dependence on the feed at 4am by giving water or sugared water?
  24. I spoke today to a friend in banking whose view was that the inflows of cash into prime property would not reverse ever. Not sure that I agree. Once things stabilise you no longer need your wealth tied up in a safe but low yielding asset, surely?
  25. Many thanks. I got a v cheap plan from iPhone as I was quoted it in error and they had to stick to it. Or so they said - maybe they tell everyone that to make people think it is a fab deal. When I renew though it will be painful hence the looking around. How do your colleagues find it? Unfortunately apple is quite good at what it does and I am not yet convinced Samsung is quite there yet.
