Don't want to underpay or indeed overpay - can anyone tell me a reasonable rate? The children would be in bed asleep and v seldom wake so it is just a question of watching tv or reading a book. Many thanks

ED house prices: sanity check please
dulwichgirl2 replied to Wanhope's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Paris? Wow. I wldnt know where to start there. The 8th holds its value I suppose but after that I would have no clue. Stamp duty is another nightmare - really eating into middle income deposits. Very unfair tax. -
I am afraid that is the lesson, Saila, but what an ill conceived and short term plan it is. Meanwhile the "wise virgins" lose out by doing the right thing, once again.... Rewarding property risk taking is wrong and encourages the belief that "work" (dear god imagine that!) is a stupid and slow way to make money.

ED house prices: sanity check please

Try Nunhead instead - more vfm and ok schools. (Also thank anyone who pm'ed you by pm!) I think it is a bit hit and miss. Think only in terms of square footage and ignore the number of bedrooms. I would also be aware that savvy sellers do up their houses with eg highly expensive curtains etc which persuade some foolish buyers to stump up massively. Keep sf as your yardstick. Ask how long it has been on market and check property snakes and ladders website. -
Beauty products/ remedies you swear by..

Vaseline - good for lips obviously but also eyebrows... I tried to economise last year but actually found that the more expensive foundation was better value - you use so much less. Clinique is what seems to suit me for that. I buy Rimmel lipsticks as I change colour of outfits a lot and need lots of differently coloured lipsticks accordingly. -
Horrible thought - are you allowed to make money from Disney characters? Do you need a licence? Sorry to raise this if so. :-(

There would be demand for it undoubtedly. Brilliant idea. The issue would be your fee. Realistically you might spend longer getting there and back than doing the performance. Can you make money at it?! Maybe do a few per Saturday? That would be your busy day presumably?

Help!!! I broke my bugaboo cameleon!!
dulwichgirl2 replied to nabz's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Is it my imagination or does this happen too frequently to Bugaboos? People seem often to have this issue on the forum. -
Lozellen, yes so I now gather. Amazing what technology can do, isn't it? Thank you for the info. Emma, Thank you for all the ideas. I will look up your website. Many thanks all.

Now this is exactly what we need!

Children's bedroom hand painted murals

I think it is a great idea and love the egs, especially the giraffe. I think if you could scale it, and get some efficiency in terms of product, it could be a great way to make some extra money part time. One thought - as the baby and child stages are sadly so short, would you do it such that the customer could paint or paper over the images quite easily? -
My husband is more musically talented than I and he assures me that the modern electronic ones are fine. He prefers one so he can get back to his previous standard while wearing headphones and no one else hearing his trials! I gave up at grade six so I can play but have next to no real talent I am afraid. Can anyone advise on (a) the best electronic one if we went that route and (b) a teacher for whom I could give my husband "vouchers" for christmas? Many thanks

6 month old advice desperately needed!

Stupid and cheeky comment from health visitor. Changes like this should be investigated for the good of the child and the mother. In this case it seems like it could be insufficient milk, in which case what were you supposed to do? Keep waking at 4am then go to work and have a hungry baby. I'd be tempted to complain about the hv attitude. Anyway, hope increasing or changing the milk offering is working and good luck with starting back. Gillandjoe, sorry to hear your trials. :-( have you been to the dr? I assume you are bf? Could you or your husband give a (heavier) bottle instead? Some of the babies who sleep well are doing so on formula and it makes the mother's life so much easier. Give it a go for the late feed perhaps? -
Children's bedroom hand painted murals
dulwichgirl2 replied to SebsC's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Great idea but as always comes down to cost. I suppose that depends on your time. If you have to go and look at everything it will end up quite expensive. Would you have a range of off the peg ideas that customers could just click on as it were? Those wanting a tailormade service with images of relatives or favourite toys or whatever could have special consultations and separate fee scheme, perhaps? -
Where are the half houses? (if you can state another road as an example perhaps?) There are tiny cottages in sw6 which have a staircase on the diagonal as you go in. It is difficult to describe better than this. The staircase is not in front of you going up, nor is it to the right or left but it is in the middle of the room you enter and goes diagonally. Does anyone know what I mean and can anyone put it better? Do any of these houses exist in ed?

Hi Mike, welcome to ED - hope you enjoy the forum and find it useful. There is a certain brand of humour which I hope you also find amusing (but never take things personally!).

Axster, what is causing it then? Certainly not the booming uk economy. There are any number of studies showing that panicked eurozone and middle eastern money has ramped up prices in K and C massively. A game of chicken has developed with the few old money Brits still living there as they watch already valuable property going for up to 1.5 times what it was worth a few months ago. Their dilemma is when to cash out ie how much longer and deeper the crisis will be. THey then move to, inter alia, Fulham, battersea or clapham. (not nhg as it is now too dear for them and full of foreign and banker money itself.) Battersea has gone mad and 700 sf two bed cottages (sorry bijou townhouses) in sw6 go for 700k. You cannot swing a cat in them but they do have outside space big enough for a chair and a newspaper. We are eventually getting that overspill as I described, partly owing to the virtuous circle that has developed as the area has improved. If anyone thinks it is all about British buyers though I would be interested to hear the reasoning. London prime and gold are doing v well out of this crisis, though not as well as jimmy Carr. I was astonished to learn he earns that sort of money, even without the tax issue.

Hedges, surely once the crisis is over, they will repatriate their money. Alternatively any more of that rioting nonsense in Britain and they will move their investment to the USA. Noone can say that ed, the bastion of middle middle class families is doing well owing to prosperity in that group. It above all other socio groups has been hammered by this recession. The house price rises are nothing to do with the uk and are in spite of the dire position of many in ED.

Thanks vik and Kk and for the link.

I must disagree. It is all to do with foreign money bumping up k and c which moves most of the old British money into Fulham, battersea and nicer bits of clapham. Then overspill to herne hill and here, largely owing to the good private schools which advertise the area to sw dwellers regardless of whether they end up sending their children to dc or jags. Four bed, loft done, side return not done - Fulham or Wandsworth (sw17 not sw18) - go for an eye watering 1.2mm. People sell and move here with the proceeds. But it will all unwind at some point.

If you need a pump get a Stewart turner one. They are dear but last twenty years with any luck. Others break in my experience and the hassle of getting things fixed is immense.

Nursery Visit - Advice Needed
dulwichgirl2 replied to adelle f's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Whether you have to sign in on arrival (if not forget it as their security is too lax), arrangements for changing pick up person/verifying id at pick up (somewhere I asked told me they went by whether the child was happy to go with the adult) and check all aspects of safety as you go around. If you see anything unsatisfactory at all, forget it. This is a visit where they are trying their best and you can be sure it is more lax when people are not visiting. Staff turnover - v important, again forget anywhere with a high turnover as the hildren will not bond, the adults are discontented for some reason and you cannot trust them to the same extent as those where the staff have been for years without incident. Cleanliness and hygiene - loos etc. Then and only then would I be asking about superficial things like programme of events. -
Joanna, I think you might get a spike in your trade following that eminently reasonable post. I would temper it with Belle's well put point about parents having lunch equals fine, parents nursing coffees equals less good for business and somehow, tactfully, to be deterred. How about an offer - coffee one pound with lunch, 2.50 on its own?
