    I don't go on trains.
  2. 4 rashers of extra-virgin pork, triple cured on a bed of oak-smoked whiskey barrels 2 slices homemade spelt brioche, gently coaxed from a hand-greased tin Three san marzano tomatoes, dried under an Italian sun then pulped with an ostentatious pestle and mortar. Serve with The Guardian.
  3. This is madness. MADNESS. One packet of Oscar Meyer bacon. One loaf Warburtons white sliced load One bottle of Heinz Tommy K. and THAT is IT.
  4. I have dipped half a toe in there.. seems to be working out ok for a number of regulars. The problems I have with it are that, firstly, it moves at a glaaaaaaciiiiiaaaaal pace (looking things up on Wikipedia and re-phrasing them takes time, you know). So in that respect, yes, it is like a conversation - only one you have with a narcoleptic aunt at a funeral. Secondly, there are so many occasions where someone says something that really demands a verbal shoeing, but instead, like an edition of Later with Jools Holland when everybody stands around stroking their chin and pretending to appreciate each other's music, nothing happens. Which tends to make it less like a conversation and more like a succession of unconnected statements.

Good point. Here I sit, all day long, hunched over a desk, all red-faced, working away.. You're right. I deserve an iPad.

Surely.. but then it isn't meant to; no more than an iPod can replace the necessity for iTunes and a computer to sync to. For me, the killer iPad 'deciders' will centre on whether its limited multitasking abilities will be a problem, and the nagging suspicion that iPad Mk II will feature a more regular Mac OS rather than one based on the iPhone.

Haven't noticed anything earth-shattering as of yet. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Oh, I hope so. I'm delighted (for Apple) that they've managed to persuade hundreds of millions of people that iPhones and iPods are 'the thing to have' but for me, computers have only ever been purchased on the basis on what I need them for, how well they work and value for money.

If only it didn't have that stupid glossy screen.

Alternatively, I could buy a PC laptop, which would cost me around the same as an iPad, give extra functionality which I don't need - in a slightly more cumbersome form - and not even do the three things I wanted it to do in a pleasing fashion, let alone the things I don't need it to do. Alternatively, I could buy a netbook, which would cost slightly less than an iPad, would give me around the same functionality, only in a slightly more cumbersome form and not even do the three things I wanted it to do in a pleasing fashion. Or there's the iPad. Which might just do exactly the things I want it to do, in a thoroughly pleasing manner, for a price that (compared to the alternatives) doesn't start to look so bad.

Sure.. if you've got one, which I haven't. For me, buying a Macbook would mean me spending twice as much as on an iPad, for extra functionality which I don't need, packaged-up in a form which is slightly more cumbersome to use. I have enough friends who own ?1000 emailing machines without needing to join the club myself.

iPad, and iPad pricing is not yet available. Still a good month of umming and ahhing to go. The most pratical and honest review so far has come from an unexpected quarter - longtime Mac-hater Charlie Brooker (soon to be smugging it up with his own Mac after finally coming to terms with the fact that he'd "rather use a laptop that just works") - who has fingered the nub of the iPad's appeal once you've washed-off the sheen of Apple's marketing bullshit. Whether it has a camera, weighs more or less than an iPhone, does more or less the an iPhone, compares favourably or not to a Macbook is neither here nor there. 99% of its usage will taken-up by emailing and surfing the web whilst watching tv - a scenario where iPhones and Laptops fall short - and one where the iPad will excel.

I had this identical response the last time this gentleman called to peddle his wares - a few months back. I can only assume that the plan is to make the exchange sufficiently unpleasant so as to encourage you to buy the next time they call - if only to avoid more of the same. F****** C****, to be honest.
  15. Naturally the Bullingdon pic seems to confirm everything I already suspected about Cameron, Osbourne et al. That said, from personal experience, "The Oxbridge Thing" is often cited somewhat unfairly with regards to having an easy pop at people who have been professionally successful - though I'm thinking more outside of politics here, admittedly. Anyway, all this is beside the point. Not voting Conservative because of the Bullingdon picture would be like not going to see Nickelback because you don't like the typeface used on the poster.
  16. Have I missed it? Is it too late for me to get offended about something?

It's a fun idea, but not quite what I was thinking, no.

There's a distinct whiff of 'rivals' to all this, I'd say. And that's kinda complimentary both ways.

  22. This seems appropriate, I think
  23. Forest Hill Road is celebrity central. I see Rod Stewart and Freddie Mercury there nearly every other week.
