Tram systems like the one in Croydon are upto 10x more expensive over their life time. If a tram breaks down then the line is stuck. If a trolleybus breaks down it can be towed away. Cost and enviro benefits... I've used Trolleybuses in numerous cities in France Switzerland Germany and Hungary and they work very well. The technology is already in Europe for combined diesel electric Trolleybuses which offer a very flexible cost efficient transport solution.
