  1. What did you eat Dopamine 1979...?
  2. Many years ago I trained as a nurse with a mature student whose surname was Down. She had a son called Neil and a daughter called Ida.
  3. Well said Alice.
  4. I agree with Robert Poste's Child. Louisa has made her point. She's been slapped down and put in her place [or so some people might think]. Now lets give her a break.
  5. And I think its fair to say that the point of the CPZ was not to provide a better system for people to park outside their house but to prevent commuters, and such, from parking there for long periods of time. Sorry Louisa, I feel like I have burst your bubble.
  6. It definitely wasn't 24/7. Depending on how near, or far, you were from the 'centre'...some roads only had a 12md to 2pm restriction to prevent all day parking by commuters. But it was Mon-Sat. Sunday was a free for all.
  7. Yes, the CPZ was Mon-Sat 8am to 8pm on my road. Is that what you mean Louisa?
  8. I wish I could add something witty but I am still having a lie-down...
  9. I SO don't want to revive the views on CPZ as I know it has been done to death previously, and it will be resurrected when the issue is raised again. BUT, as someone who has LIVED THE CPZ! [i moved from St Albans where it is well and truly established], I just want to say one thing... It is the spawn of the devil!! It will occupy your thinking each and every day, when you are in your car all the way home from work...its not 'at last, I will be able to park outside my house', it will be...everyone is arriving home about now, will there be any spaces left? You will feel entitled as you have paid good money but that means nothing. You will be issued with a 'limited' number of visitors permits [at a cost] and, depending on how close you are to the centre of the CPZ, will be restricted to the number of hours they can stay for. [between 1 and 4]. Someone drops by for 5 minutes and you spend most of it looking out of the window, checking for wardens . If you can see the road, that is. When you have used up your allocation of visitor permits you will have to write to the council to plead why you should have more. [What business is it of theirs?] Every day your streets will be patrolled by Gestapo-looking wardens [ours were ready at the corner of the street at 7.55am every Sat morning] and they were a permanent presence, thus adding a negative vibe to the street. Every day but Sunday. It might cost you for the permit but when the cleaning lady comes, the man to fix the boiler, babysitter, etc etc, you have to be on top of the visitor permits. I was caught a number of times...returning home in the middle of the night after visiting ill parents, parked with the intention of moving before the wardens came, slept in,..?68. Friends staying over and parking on double yellow til morning, forgot and another ?68, cleaning lady stays longer, another ?68. Believe me, you will spend more time thinking about CPZ than you realise. renewing your permit...you must have proof of ownership of car, utility bill from the last 3 mths, [no photocopy],I.D, previous permit, etc. The biggest negative is the permanent presence of dour looking wardens [no matter how pleasant I might be to them, they get a lot of stick] and it made the happy neighbourhood I lived in feel like a warden-controlled state. And, once established, they changed NOTHING, despite our many objections, including the timing [we were .5 mile from city centre but had an 8am to 8pm restriction]. SO...sorry for the knee-jerk response but, after 14mths back in ED, the scars remain.
  10. Happened to a friend of mine who realised that the paint scraps left behind were compatible with the red paint on his neighbour's car....any chance that this could be the same for you, sfmrs? He challenged the neighbour with an offer of some sort of paint analysis to prove it was him and the culprit coughed up. Just wondered if you have noticed a red car nearby with an appropriate bit of damage? I know its a long shot [and you mentioned a 'slim chance'] but you never know...?
  11. Dopamine1979..I agree with fishbiscuits, a quick flash should be enough. Also, maybe a good marinade for as long as you can spare? But make sure you only add the marinade to the dish towards the end or you will end up with stewed meat and that probably toughens it up more. Another way it is done in some Chinese restaurants is to cook the meat first then scoop it out whilst the veg are cooking then add the meat back with the final seasonings.
  12. ps...fishbiscuits..I think the website that your pancakes came from deserved a bit of recognition. There will definitely be some followers from EDF once they know of its existence! Red Bull Chili Chicken, anyone?
  13. ..the best fish I have ever had from a fish and chip shop was last night... a marvellous piece of haddock from the place on Forest Hill Road, opp surgery. Huge, moist, light batter, oh, it was fantastic.
  14. Dulwich Village, East Dulwich, West Dulwich should all be simplified and called Dulwich. Until someone asks which part of Dulwich you live in and then its, er, East Dulwich
  15. the man with the van...please would you use some punctuation? trying to read your posts is giving me a headache...
  16. Wonderful Steveo! Maybe he could become a supergroup with Crystal Swing...? {altho they seem to have the worldwide fame thing knocked on the head already]. http://www.crystalswing.com/stars.html#md
  17. What a contrast Salsaboy and DirtyBox! I would happily have either. Or both even.
  18. Its no longer 'this week' its last week, so I thought if I added 'with recipes' we might have a few more interesting additions...'
  19. Thanks KidKruger, looking forward to it! In answer to Dopamine1979's request..here's a delish, simple supper I enjoyed last night... Chicken with courgettes and limes. Serves 2 6-8oz skinned and boned chicken meat 12-14oz courgettes and 2 limes a little olive oil and soy sauce. Cut raw chicken into small strips. Toss it in 2tsp oil with a good shake of soy and a good grinding of black pepper. Cover and leave to marinate for 1hr-or all day if more convenient. Top and tail the courgettes and cut into matchsticks or grate thickly. Saute them in a non-stick pan barely filmed with oil. Remove and keep hot. Add chicken and flavourings and stir-fry until tender and just cooked. Quickly pour on the juice of the limes, return the courgettes to the pan, season well with s+p and toss to mix. Serve on hot plates. Nutty basmati rice goes well.
  20. KidKruger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Excellent. > > At home: > Burmese chicken thigh curry. > Lamb kofte curry. > Thai chicken and potato curry. > Spag Bol loaded with port. Oh my. Any chance of a recipe, KidKruger? The Burmese chicken thigh curry sounds fab...
  21. Spatchcock quail with a lovely sour-ish polenta, and gremolata, from lunch at TOASTed A home-made Sopranos-type gnocchi dish with a lamb bolognaise and feta Fried tomatoes with a bit of nutmeg and double cream, on toast A leftover snickers icecream bar that I found at the back of the freezer when I thought they were all gone! Anyone else had a week as good as I? [please be prepared to answer requests for recipes...!!] Jacqui.
  22. Sue, my point was not that we are under any obligation to shop but that we shouldn't give the stallholders a kicking because they haven't turned out in full force over the last few weeks when the weather has been so bad, that's all. Maybe I should have given a bit of a "rant warning". Or maybe I should have just addressed my post to unlurked...
  23. Hands up, all those people who tried to shop in Northcross Road Market on each Saturday, post-Christmas, when the wind was blowing the stalls over and the rain was coming down in sheets and most people didn't have any money?? Not just to buy your "one off" favourite pie, but to buy clothes, antiques, records, pottery? To linger and have a coffee, freshly made by the lady with the van, although it will take a few minutes, so if you don't mind getting completely soaked... Or did you just have a sulk because you had planned your dinner party around the cheese you were going to buy..just pop out, brave the rain... and goddammit, those selfish stallholders who had planned their stock, spent days baking, organised their clothes, brought in extra antique furniture stock, packed up their cars...hey, they decided it wasn't worth it, selfish people, because its only about profit and who the hell wants to go out in the rain to make a few dollars? Seriously, guys...are we that selfish and lacking in a bit of common sense? I know a few people for whom the Northcross Rd market is an important part of their livelihood, and god knows, since the beginning of the year, financially, trade in NXR market has been sh*t. To paraphrase Ron70..."Just been down North Cross Road, where did the customers go? :-( " See you Saturday.
  24. Was there last Saturday when the cake stall near the Palmerston blew over, scattering a third of her cakes all over the road. Then the stall collapsed. Guess there wasn't much profit left that day...
  25. I don't know if it will help but do you have an outside security light with a movement sensor? I can't help but feel that if they were trying to break in under the glare of a light, they might think twice. Its only one small thing but everything helps... Really sorry to hear of your break in. Jacqui.
