Paris with a toddler - advice needed
IlonaM replied to louise.flynn's topic in The Family Room Discussion
See: https://www.timeout.com/paris/en/things-to-do/Paris-for-kids for things to do with kids and https://www.timeout.com/paris/en/things-to-do/the-ten-best-parks-gardens for Jardin du Luxembourg: 'Jardin du Luxembourg Closest metro: Vavin/Od?on/Saint-Sulpice The 25-hectare park is a prized family attraction. Kids come from across the city for its pony rides, ice-cream stands, puppet shows, pedal karts, sandpits, metal swingboats and merry-go-round. Look out for the intense games of chess that take place on the wooded side of the park.' There is also a boating pond with lovely little sail boats for hire in the Jardin des Tuileries (closest metro: Tuileries) near the Louvre. If you google boating pond in Jardin des Tuileries you'll find some pictures. -
I found 'GET OFF "Cat and Dog Repellent" Crystals - Green' worked quite well. They disappear if it rains, but markedly reduced cats visiting the garden. There is also a spray which I used to spray on the top of fences. Have a look at Ebay/Amazon.
-
Thanks John, if the gels don't work I may well have to go old school. And thanks Sue for your advice too.
-
That sounds interesting Sue. I will have to google that. Question is whether I can get in to the back of the airing cupboard to apply it!
-
Hi Sue, Not too early if you're at my end of Underhill it seems!!!! Last year they arrived in June - not so many. This year they arrived in force over the Bank Holiday weekend - must have been the mildish winter. Have got bait traps, but they are not biting (so to speak). This morning I found possible entrances to a nest in the back of the airing cupboard behind the hot water tank.
-
I have been invaded again by flying ants. Last year it was June, this year May in kitchen and bathroom. Have tried the gel baits, but they appear to be too street smart to do anymore than walk over the top. Tried some homemade spray (water, washing up liquid and peppermint oil) yesterday and cleared up those on the windows, but they're back today. Just found possible entrance to nest site in airing cupboard. Has anyone had any success in both deterring an invasion and dealing with a nest? All advice gratefully received.

Having had my own share of challenging situations at work I would suggest talking to the confidential and free helpline run by ACAS (See: http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=2042). ACAS also has a lot of guidance and advice online. Alternatively, are you a member of a union? As a lawyer I had never considered joining one, but as the right-on firm I was working for at the time had an in-house GMB branch I did join and found their advice and support invaluable when I needed it. The benefits of being a member extend beyond employment law and advice to other areas of legal advice etc. I hope that you can resolve the issue at appraisal without too much upset and stress. I know how these things can impact on the rest of our lives and health, so go in well-armed with advice and support. Best wishes, I

I agree with obtaining as much paper evidence as possible for if and when you need to go back into court. I would suggest getting some legal advice on this (if you haven't already). Yes, very useful survey. Have passed it on to other friends and family.

What a horrible experience for both your au pair and dog. Might the Co-op have cctv of the area outside their shop? At least around the entrance and any cashpoint.

Lost black and white cat FOUND NOW, THANK YOU! <3
IlonaM replied to kayvee's topic in Lost, Found or Stolen
Sorry to hear your cat has wandered off. Have you put up posters locally and registered her on the local lost pets websites? [http://www.yourcat.co.uk/Help-I-ve-Lost-My-Cat/finding-a-missing-cat.html] When she gets back maybe keep her inside for a few weeks so that she gets used to her home before venturing out. More tips for new cats here: http://www.cats.org.uk/uploads/documents/cat-care-leaflets-2013/EG02_Welcome_home.pdf -

Freedom of Speech is not an absolute right under the Convention & UK law, it is a qualified right which is why it is drafted in the way it is. Hate speech is not protected, for example. For further info and clarification Liberty does a briefing sheet: https://www.liberty-human-rights.org.uk/human-rights/what-are-human-rights/human-rights-act/article-10-freedom-expression The Council of Europe also has published very good guides on Art 10.

One woman confirmed dead (Standard suggests two deaths), and at least ten serious, some catastrophic, injuries. One seriously injured woman rescued from the river. Car drove into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge then one of the at least - according to witnesses quoted on BBC - two attackers stabbed a police officer inside gates of Westminster. Terrible, but could have been far worse when you think about France and Germany's experiences with terrorists using vehicles as weapons. Stabbed police officer confirmed to have died from his injuries according to the Guardian.

Petition: 'Theresa May: Do not abandon the Dubs Scheme for refugee children'
IlonaM replied to IlonaM's topic in The Lounge
Update from Lord Dubs and launch of the Alf Dubs Children's Fund 'We came together to write and call our MPs ? to ask them to vote on a new amendment that could give hope to the most vulnerable refugee children. But instead of pushing the door open, it?s just been shut to thousands of children across Europe who will spend tonight alone and in some of the worst conditions I?ve seen. I?m devastated. The Britain I know is better than this. The Britain I know is made of heroes like Sir Nicholas Winton, who saved 669 children virtually single handed on the eve of the Second World War. I was one of them. That?s why today I am asking you to support the Alf Dubs Children?s Fund - https://alf-dubs-childrens-fund.fundraise.tech/one-off/?utm_campaign=dubsscheme&utm_medium=email&tags=dubslaunchdonor Together with Citizens UK?s Safe Passage, this Fund will seek out safe and legal routes for vulnerable children to find refuge in the UK. Already we have staff on the ground in Greece, Italy and France, working with the tens of thousands of children stranded there. Theresa May?s government may have failed these children ? but we won?t give up. You are the Britain that I believe in. An open, welcoming and just country. Thank you for every letter, phone call and action you?ve taken. Each one makes a difference. It tilts the scales of justice towards fairness and compassion. I?m asking you today to donate and help tilt those scales a little further. Together we can make the difference. Together we are powerful. Amnesty campaign against new travel ban signed today - Send an e-mail to the White House to protest the ban: https://www.amnesty.org.uk/actions/donald-trump-new-travel-muslim-refugee-ban?from=issue&utm_source=Email&utm_medium=Mass&utm_campaign=Human_Rights&utm_content=Trump_ban_parttwo_v1&utm_campaign=Trump_New_Ban_v1&utm_source=emailCampaign&utm_content=&utm_medium=email 'President Trump's new travel ban goes into effect in just 10-days. Act now to block it. View email online Fight Trump's Muslim Ban The day we dreaded is here. Just now President Trump has signed another Executive Order - banning people from several Muslim-majority countries, suspending the refugee program, and slashing the number of refugees who are allowed into the US when it restarts. Make no mistake: This new version is just another attempt at a Muslim ban - denying people based on who they are, not what they?ve done. Let?s fight it with everything we?ve got, just like we did last time. Tell President Trump to stop this ban and to protect human rights Email the White House "This replacement order is the same hate and fear with new packaging. It will cause extreme fear and uncertainty for thousands of families by, once again, putting anti-Muslim hatred into policy. No amount of editing can make this executive order anything but what it is ? blatant bigotry." Margaret Huang, executive director of Amnesty International USA Email the White House This new order is inhumane, short-sighted and against all of our shared values. That?s why we need to put global pressure on the White House - and we need to do it fast, before more lives are torn apart. Help us make enough noise that they can?t ignore us. Stand up for human rights - email the White House now Thank you for your tireless support, Laura Trevelyan Priority Campaign Manager Amnesty International UK'

Source: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/can-you-hear-me-phone-scam-fraud-us-britain-police-pennsylvania-florida-uk-a7597106.html 'If someone calls and asks, ?Can you hear me??, hang up the phone immediately. A major phone scam from the US is set to cross the pond and hit the UK imminently. But police and call-blocking companies are warning the public about the dangerous phone call in the hope of preventing innocent people falling victim to the scammers. Here?s how it works: You receive a phone call from a local number The voice on the end introduces themselves and the company they supposedly work for They then ask: ?Can you hear me?? Your answer is recorded, and if you say ?yes?, your response will be edited to make it appear as if you?ve agreed to a huge purchase. You?re effectively being tricked into signing a verbal contract, much the same as clicking ?I agree? to terms and conditions online. Voice signatures like these are legitimately used by companies doing business over the phone, but this is being exploited by scammers who have conned many Americans already, predominantly in Florida, Pennsylvania and Virginia. CPR Call Blocker has seen the scam rise in frequency and the company believes it?s only a matter of time before Brits start being targeted too, according to the Sunderland Echo. ?In our experience of working across the US and UK, scams spread quickly across the pond,? says Kris Hicks from CPR Call Blocker. He adds that it?s sensible for Brits to be on their guard ?as we have no doubt that fraudsters operating in the UK will soon start using these tactics.? The scammers may try and charge you for products or services you?ve never used, and if you try and argue with them, they?ll play back their recording of you saying ?yes? and threaten to take legal action if you don?t pay up. Another version of the scam sees the criminals using the person?s voice recording to authorise a stolen credit card. The public is being advised either to hang up straight away upon being asked ?Can you hear me??, or just not pick up at all if you don?t recognise the number. And if you do think you may have been caught out by the scammers, contact your bank or card provider as soon as you can.'

No-one is suggesting using a normal electric heater in the bathroom. You can easily heat up a bathroom from outside by directing a fan heater through the doorway before using the bathroom, turning it off when you go in to wash etc. The manner and tone of EA's response was unnecessary, rude and unsympathetic. There are ways and means of offering advice. EA let him/herself down.
