  1. A London-based photographer has set up a website where photographers can sell their work with all the proceeds going to help refugees. Photographer Mark Sherratt set up Prints for Refugees, after he saw the heart-breaking photograph of the young Aylan Kurdi whose body washed ashore in Turkey. 2. The housing team at Cambridge House Law Centre (See: http://www.ch1889.org/)is very good. They have worked wonders for some of my clients. Also look at the Shelter website which gives lots of info and also offers helpline advice (telephone and email).
  3. Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers (SDCAS) fundraising appeal - Support our runners on 12th July! Several of our clients, volunteers and friends are running in the British 10k London Run on Sunday 12th July 2015. We need to raise some funds to ensure that we can carry on running our day centres. We?re aiming to raise ?5,000 which would help us continue supporting asylum seekers and refugees in Southwark. Last year, thanks to the help of our friends and supporters?and the energy and sweat of our runners! ?we managed to raise nearly ?2,000 which was great. If you think the work we do is important and would like to see us be able to continue, please consider making a donation by logging on to our JustGiving page here. And tell all your friends! Remember, the more we raise the faster we run! Please share our link on Facebook and Twitter ? https://www.justgiving.com/supporttherunners2 About us: Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers (SDCAS) seeks to help relieve poverty and distress, and to promote health and further education for asylum seekers and refugees. We aim to provide a wide range of holistic services which support, promote and secure the rights of asylum seekers and refugees in the London Borough of Southwark. We strive to provide support services and a safe and welcoming environment through day centre provision, to help meet the needs of local asylum seekers. Through general advice and help we hope to facilitate access to a range of mainstream services, with particular emphasis on health, housing, employment, training, education and asylum issues. The sociable atmosphere of the day centres provides our clients with the opportunity to build their own social networks, which reduces the level of isolation so often felt in this disenfranchised group. 4. http://www.redcross.org.uk/Get-involved/Get-the-story-straight Get the story straight Everyone?s talking about immigration right now. The media are ramping up the headlines ? but should you believe the facts and figures? Over the next few months, we?ll be fact-checking news stories about refugees and asylum seekers. Every year, we support 10,000 people who?ve had to flee their countries and homes, after horrific experiences. They deserve the facts ? and so do you. Together, let?s get the story straight. Here?s how: Send us any good or bad articles you find ? read this guidance from the National Union of Journalists, if you?re not sure. Look at our fortnightly blogs, when we?ll give your stories a sense-check. Still unsure about the issue? Tell us if there?s something you?d like to understand a bit better. You can reach us at [email protected] or tweet us with the hashtag #factsnotfear.
  5. A team of Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers (SDCAS) enthusiasts are taking part in this year's 10K run to raise some funds for our organisation. We are trying to reach the goal of ?3000 to support the budget of SDCAS. You can sponsor us through the JustGiving website: www.justgiving.com/supporttherunners. Spread the word!
  6. Super. Thanks, I'll send them to Bessemer Grange.
  7. Are any local schools still collecting these vouchers? I have a bundle which I'd love to donate! I can post directly to the school if you give me an address... Thanks.
  8. Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers, based at the Copleston Centre, welcomes donations. It's best to phone the office first to let them know you're coming: 0207-732 0505.
  9. Another option is to join a union i.e. GMB. You'll get free advice & representation for employment issues as part of your membership.
  10. You can search online at the Law Society Find a Lawyer: http://www.lawsociety.org.uk/find-a-solicitor/ Also have a look at Chambers Directory for lawyers with peer recommendations: http://www.chambersandpartners.com/uk For London - employee they list: Employment: Employee: London Band 1 Slater & Gordon Lawyers Band 2 Bindmans LLP, Leigh Day & Co Band 3 Ferguson Solicitors LLP, Pattinson & Brewer, Simpson Millar LLP, Stewarts Law LLP Bindmans, Leigh Day & Co, and Pattinson & Brewer are all firms with strong reputations that I know as a non-practising solicitor. Bindmans represented a colleague of mine in an employment matter in the past. Both Bindmans & Leigh Day and Co do a lot of human rights work. You can see more info, peer reviews and contact details at Chambers & Partyners website (http://www.chambersandpartners.com/uk/Editorial/72761).
  11. If you don't get satisfaction by following the good advice above, which should work if it is a good firm which values customer relations, Citizens Advice are a good place to follow-up for free advice. If you have free legal advice offered through your home insurance or union membership you could always get free advice from a solicitor this way. If you had to take legal action it would be through the Small Claims procedure (see info at: http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/england/your_rights/legal_system/small_claims.htm), but it would be good to resolve the issue without having to take this step and the effort rather depends on the value of the property lost.
