  1. The whole junction is due a rethink - ratrunners enjoy it, but it's also a popular pedestrian route to the station as well as being a main artery into ED from Herne Hill. The Zebra isn't particularly visible to motorists who often overshoot it, and pedestrians (I will admit myself included) tend to cut across away from the crossing. Add that to the parked cars near the junction which make getting in/out of it difficult, and you've got a case for permanent signals for all. Further, if they end up routing the Cycle Superhighway via this junction next year, it'd be almost nailed on.
  2. Thanks Leaf - I don't wish to hijack this thread, I was just curious whether there was an alternative way to obtain that information (as the askmid website requires one to declare that they are the vehicle's owner before perfoming such a check).

How can you find out about its insured status (unless you are its owner, the police or an insurance company)?
  4. The population doesn't need to increase for the demand for public transport to do so.
  5. I've had a variety of providers over the last 5-10 years but have stuck with United Hosting lately. They have a pre-sales forum here and a knowledgebase at unitedsupport.co.uk.
  6. We had a bag last week, supposed to have been collected on Wednesday but it wasn't. Invariably they end up collecting them, but rarely on the day advertised, which is a bit of a pain because they probably miss out on recovering lots of goods/returned bags. But yes, it sounds legit.
  7. Good campaign. Please direct some of your attention to the Apple store in Covent Garden. I was waiting to meet someone outside there one evening last week and the sodding things were enough to keep the entire street cosy. Crazily unnecessary, but on that sort of scale, also presumably quite harmful.
  8. And how's about this for a population pyramid?
  9. Lowlander Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What's the total population of ED? 12,321. There's a whole bunch more to get stuck into here. However, as per the first post, the definition of ED in the census may differ from various others.

Yeah, thought it was great (not really knowing the background to the story before going in). I still enjoy saying "Argo f**k yourself" when picking up the phone. Is there a good movies-related thread in The Lounge at all?
  11. Popped over to the market for some lunch today (no pie lady - damn). The Duck Egg Cafe are apparently looking after the Dogfather's pitch whilst he's on holiday. Had a brief chat with the chaps operating, who said they're opening a new cafe (they already have one in Brixton) where Grace & Favour used to be, in around three weeks. No opinion, just sharing the info.
  12. Doesn't pass the smell test. The top 20 contains 11 postcode areas from Leeds/Bradford/Hull and 8 from London (full list below). Among the London postcode areas, at least two of these don't fit - SW12 and SE22. Let's look at the text of the article: "MoneySupermarket.com analysed 3.49 million applications for home insurance quotes made between December 2011 and the end of November 2012. They looked at the number of users who said they had made a claim for burglary at their current address in the past two years." So, these are actually based upon claims made across a three year period (December 2009 to November 2012). Couple that information with the stats sourced further up this thread, as well as your instincts about the levels of burglary in the area at that time, and something doesn't appear to be correct. There's an easy inference here that there is a spurious factor affecting those results (without the data, the answer as to what it is can be anyone's guess). Remember firstly that you have to have insurance in order to claim on it. There are no clues in the article as to the incidence of insurance bought in these postcodes, but from career experience I can tell you that deprived areas will always have lower incidence of cover. The higher the incidence of cover, the more opportunities there are to claim. As for those worried about their claims rising as a result - fear not. This is an article sponsored by a website, who conducted their own research. Insurance companies don't use those kinds of source to determine their premiums, they have far more sophisticated (and more often internal) methods for doing so. The full list, clustered by area: Leeds/Bradford 1 LS13 Leeds 2 BD12 Bradford 7 LS18 Leeds 10 LS28 Leeds 12 HU6 Hull 13 BD10 Bradford 14 BD17 Bradford 15 LS25 Leeds 17 BD18 Bradford 19 LS12 Leeds 20 BD6 Bradford London 3 N12 North Finchley, north London 5 RM3 Romford 6 SW12 Balham, south London 8 UB3 Hayes, west London 9 SE22 East Dulwich, south east London 11 IG2 Ilford, east London 16 TW12 Hampton, south west London 18 SW16 Streatham, south London Manchester 4 M30 Manchester
  13. Was it a ploy to make people aware that it existed? Whenever I come past it only ever seems like there are about four people in there.
  14. Having moved to ED last summer, it seemed that this would have been a great idea. Why not have everything you want on one's doorstep? However, with the lack of any nearer cinema, we've been pushed to patronising the Peckham Plex to get our fill, and have visited around half a dozen times now. 15-20 minutes to walk from the top half of Lordship Lane, a decent range of films (admittedly quite mainstream) and extremely reasonable prices. It's by no means boutique, but certainly good value and never difficult to get tickets (the only screening that was more than 25% full was the opening night of Skyfall, which was wonderfully rammed). Whilst perhaps a single screen, high-end affair might be nice to have in ED for the occasional treat, I don't think it would steer us away from regularly using the Peckham Plex, and would heartily recommend it to others too, if they haven't already tried it.
  15. Snow barely touched the sides. Buses and trains appear to be running better than a usual day.
  16. emza78 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Is there anything we can do > to make them go away? Doubt it - from what I can tell, it's not as if it's rubbish in the street that's attracting them to the area, as they're just prowling around in the middle of the road. Ask them nicely?
  17. Have had it quite a lot this autumn/winter so far, in the roads between Felbrigg and Lordship Lane, at anything between 9pm and 5am. It's like a shrieking sound, and definitely foxes rather than dogs. They've not been around these parts for the last 2-3 weeks, though.
  18. In theory it's currently open daytimes. However, announced this lunchtime, it's among 65 proposed for closure. See the full list here.
  19. I'm 100% certain that I've seen a sign outside one of the newsagents on LL (Post Office side) advertising cartridge refills, if that might offer a decent alternative. Couldn't tell you exactly where, though, mind's a blank, but definitely in the stretch between Iceland and Nero.
  20. In all seriousness, not a lot. Wouldn't mind the addition of a few things, but they're really just luxuries rather than anything ED really needs. 1 or 2 screen cinema, maybe Somewhere that does nice Ice Cream/FroYo as a sideline A few fewer curry houses Some sort of rustic italian or spanish joint But really, compared with most places, we're spoilt. Enjoy what you have whilst it lasts.
  21. Some unconnected thoughts: 1) No policy on speed limits should be based around what speed motor manufacturers design their cars to be most efficient at. 2) Reducing the number of privately owned vehicles in highly urbanised, well served areas, is generally a good thing. 3) No one rule is perfect for everyone, but those that help the majority tend to go down quite well. If a road doesn't need to have a 30 mph limit, then why should it? 4) A policy such as this should not be considered as a panacea for a greater problem (such as accident volumes, or environmental concerns), but taken in the context of a collective of measures which are put in place. This suggestion would appear to pass the smell test. I like it, but can understand that it doesn't serve everyone's best interests. But, we're a society - let's act like one.
  22. Yup, we had a visit from them yesterday evening, at around 6:30pm, on one of the roads between Felbrigg and Lordship Lane. His patter was that 80% of breast cancer was curable, and their aim was to get that up to 100%. I didn't really have the time to allow him to go much further, but didn't think it was too late (one would imagine that doing the same at around 3pm would have generated far less interest and a lot more unanswered knocks).

Could it be, for instance, that it deliberately includes padding in order to schedule arrival at a vacant CJ platform? Else, why wouldn't that padding be spaced out across the route?
