  1. Hansler Road isn't controlled, generally, but there are sections outside the Carpet shop that have single yellow lines.
  2. A borehole scan at the top of the hill, from the Geo Survey website... http://mapapps.bgs.ac.uk/geologyofbritain/home.html?mode=boreholes If you look carefully you can see the tippex over the top of the bit that originally said "molten lava"...
  3. And 4-0 last night (admittedly against what would appear to be weak opponents, but still...). Very very good start.
  4. Something's clearly wrong there... have the papers cut down on the number of pretty young things they put on their front pages? On this point specifically, A-Level results day is an annual event in which very little is reportable - pass rates go up or down somewhat marginally. What's actually the news here?
  5. edhistory Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It's Southwark Council's fault for granting > planning permission for family houses to be > converted into flats. > Not seeking to antagonise... is there any evidence for this (e.g. that a 3-bed Victorian house in ED converted into two flats resulted in more people living there, on average)? I'd be interested to learn more - I had always convinced myself, probably ignorantly, that this wasn't the case, and that houses were (typically) populated by families and flats by singletons or couples. I know that there are no hard-and-fast rules, and that some singletons live in large houses and some large families live in flats, but has there been any research on the habiting numbers before/after conversion?

Only two scenarios I can think of that would make it preferable to Zipcar: 1) specifically if I didn't want to perform a return journey (e.g. I was using public transport for the other leg) 2) if I was doing a return, with a big break between the two legs (we often ZipCar over to Wandsworth, say, and then come back four or five hours later, and end up paying for the dead time when the car is parked up)
  7. Yes - as the line is essentially provided by BT, the speeds etc aren't really specific to PlusNet (I think), but their Customer Service is excellent. AND if a member of EDF recommends you, they save ?1/month off their bill too ;)
  8. northlondoner Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Anyone ever seen a Car Club space in use ? No, > neither have I . Presumably because the cars are being used. That's a good thing! There are a number of Zipcars for instance that are in use for most waking hours every day (such as the ones on Felbrigg, or Ashdown). But when the cars aren't being used, they need somewhere to go. Six people using one car for an hour each, and one empty parking space for six hours is clearly preferable over five cars taking up space on the street for the other five hours they're not in use.

Turns out that's slightly incorrect - I was going by an old version of the home area on their website, and it does extend further east than that (just not in the CPZ areas), so the theory I suggested as to why they're bunched up is a load of tosh. They don't have a home location, though, so as soon as a member drives one off, it'll live there for a while. They have a free lifetime membership offer at the moment. Slightly impractical, but if one was annoyed enough and desperate enough, they could sign up and move the cars themselves (for 35p/min!).
  10. It's less that the company are putting them there, but more likely that their users are. From what I understand so far, they're widening their 'home area' (where the cars need to be left behind) all the time, and just recently this has included many parts of East Dulwich and surrounding areas. However, it would seem that everything to the east of Barry Road (ish) is outside the 'home area', and so people who want to go outside the home area park up inside it (i.e. in ED) and then walk the last little bit, leaving the car behind. In theory that's good for members in ED, but whilst the scheme is so new and take-up isn't significant, many of the cars are being left behind. Their parking policy is that, if it's legal, it's legal. They don't have designated bays like ZipCar. In Islington and Sutton you can appearently leave it in a Pay & Display zone. Around here, anything (legal) goes, just like any other car. If the streets of ED were in a CPZ, for instance then it'd be a different matter, and that's presumably why the Car2Go 'Home Area' missed out huge chunks of south & central London.
  11. Going back to the original thought, for a moment... MrBen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Most houses > round here are currently going to sealed bids and > selling for ?750k+ to 32 year old couples from > Clapham who?ve just sold flats. They?re filling > the middle gap but not without the usual lasting > change on the area (good/bad/discuss/etc) Yes, there does seem to be something of a glut of this kind of behaviour at the moment, but it cannot run infinitely, and once that phase dies down a little (and assuming that these aren't all transients, looking to make a few quid on the property before moving out to the sticks themselves), then these will become the next generation of ED'ers. Lasting change doesn't occur overnight, by its very definition it requires time. We moved to the area in 2012, and one of the things that struck me was the apparent dearth of people in the 45-65 age bracket. Looking along the station platform in the morning, the vast majority would appear to be between 25-40. Where did these middle-agers disappear to? Presuming that they ever populated ED, they must have moved away and vacated these homes into which the next generation (from SW London, or in many cases East and North East, or wherever) are moving.
  12. Yup, also had a very young chap visit. Extremely patronising in his tone ("I presume you don't know the difference between type x and type y alarms") and also throwing in the big "we're giving stuff away for free" without actually explaining what that stuff was, nor how it was actually free... Close the door on them.
  13. I've noticed recently that the two matrix sign clocks on the LB-bound platform show times about 90 seconds apart (one of them is the same as the two on the other platform). I wouldn't use them as any reliable guide.

  16. MIB will advise you to speak to your own insurer. Each insurer has access to the Motor Insurance Database, and a high level of detail of it, and can identify insurance history for the vehicle on your behalf. To do it yourself via MIB will incur a charge (or at least it used to), and you also have a responsibility to notify your insurer of incidents anyway (whether or not you intend to make a claim).
  17. A transport industry contact got in touch with me this morning to say that "TfL have just released a tender for reviewing the planning scenarios in Southwark, Lewisham and Bromley that could support the Bakerloo line extension". I believe this to mean that a consultancy will be picked to review a wide range of transport issues in the area, and make various recommendations/options for addressing them, from which then further negotiations with TfL and consultations with councils, business and the public take place. It'll all be behind closed doors until any real plans are formed, which could well be years away yet. From what I've been able to squeeze out of my contact, the ballpark cost of a Bakerloo Line extension is quoted at ?2bn, and that the current economic situation doesn't support that expenditure. The various possible routes were reviewed in 2012 and the benefit:cost ratio favoured one via the Old Kent Road rather than into Camberwell and Peckham.
  18. The whole junction is due a rethink - ratrunners enjoy it, but it's also a popular pedestrian route to the station as well as being a main artery into ED from Herne Hill. The Zebra isn't particularly visible to motorists who often overshoot it, and pedestrians (I will admit myself included) tend to cut across away from the crossing. Add that to the parked cars near the junction which make getting in/out of it difficult, and you've got a case for permanent signals for all. Further, if they end up routing the Cycle Superhighway via this junction next year, it'd be almost nailed on.
  19. Thanks Leaf - I don't wish to hijack this thread, I was just curious whether there was an alternative way to obtain that information (as the askmid website requires one to declare that they are the vehicle's owner before perfoming such a check).
  20. dv1 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If its any help, that registration ties back to a > Black Ford Fiesta as you say, and is showing as > being an insured vehicle. How can you find out about its insured status (unless you are its owner, the police or an insurance company)?
  21. The population doesn't need to increase for the demand for public transport to do so.
  22. I've had a variety of providers over the last 5-10 years but have stuck with United Hosting lately. They have a pre-sales forum here and a knowledgebase at unitedsupport.co.uk.
  23. We had a bag last week, supposed to have been collected on Wednesday but it wasn't. Invariably they end up collecting them, but rarely on the day advertised, which is a bit of a pain because they probably miss out on recovering lots of goods/returned bags. But yes, it sounds legit.
  24. Good campaign. Please direct some of your attention to the Apple store in Covent Garden. I was waiting to meet someone outside there one evening last week and the sodding things were enough to keep the entire street cosy. Crazily unnecessary, but on that sort of scale, also presumably quite harmful.
