The OP is right though some people are not following the basics and if we get complacent before there?s a vaccine then at the moment the only tool available is lockdown / tougher restrictions. It?s been clear for a while that although the over 70?s have more serious illness should they catch it they are not the only ones affected and cases are climbing in all age ranges, if at different rates. Long Covid is still an unknown but should be a concern for those younger who catch it but it?s such an unknown that until you know someone who?s experienced it or seen someone wiped out by glandular fever which is the nearest I know of it will be so outside people?s experience it won?t be expected. Yes it was starting to look like Tier 3 measures where working but there wasn?t time to see if that was the case and for the NHS to be able to cope if cases carried on rising. Waiting just a few weeks could have taken us past capacity the virus was increasing so fast. When masks first came in the government left wearing them to common sense. Some did / some didn?t as you?d expect. We all judge risk differently. Laws were brought in just as they were for wearing seatbelts and drink driving. Laws still get broken but enough follow them to avoid the worst consequences for many. Hopefully lockdown will bring the rise in cases down and nowhere will need to go into Tier 3 when tiered restrictions return. Having seen what can happen people will do the minimum so some families can meet for Christmas - not expecting to be able to visit my parents in Greater Manchester but maybe they can see my sister also in Greater Manchester - and businesses can reopen. The virus isn?t going away any time soon but if we work together we can keep it down and have a new normal until there are some options available other than do nothing with an overwhelmed NHS, deaths and the economic impact or be in an extended lockdown. Not something anyone would choose but it?s pretty clear all over the world that there are limited actions that can be taken to have an impact on the virus. I wish I was wrong but for all ?the government had got it wrong? here / France / Italy ..... There is no magic bullet. In answer to the OP?s post I think we have a chance but it?s not going to be comfortable. Stay safe.

JohnL as you say the legislation allows you to leave home to go to any business that is open or to pick up anything pre-ordered. The guidance from the Council covers the minimum. Too long or complicated and people won?t read it so it could never cover everything. As some won?t even do the minimum which could mean extra restrictions for more for longer keeping it simple seems like a good approach. The Council website has a link to the government guidance with more detail and I think that was on what came through the door. The government guidance covers more but runs to pages. ed26 all those asked who do then pull their mask up don?t make for a good news story. There will always be those who react in a violent and uncalled for way, thankfully they are in the minority. If you feel comfortable ask someone to cover their nose / pull their mask up. If you see someone do it back them up but bear in mind that as well as those choosing not to wear masks there are those who are exempt and this doesn?t need to be proven. I?ve done it sometimes and not others. When I have I?ve never received an aggressive response. I know I?ve put my mask down to have a drink and then forgotten to pull it up straightaway, it wasn?t intentional but I wasn?t wearing a mask when I meant to / should have been. I?d not have a problem with someone asking me to put a mask on and from what I?ve seen most people don?t.

Another thread made me look at the Council website and I saw this which I believe will affect the Townley Road / East Dulwich Road junction I think I have seen posts on this before but could only find a thread about phase 3 and as this comes into operation on Thursday thought it best to post. The orders have been published for phase 2 to come into operation on 22 October. I couldn?t understand where this related to - two roads with the same name was too confusing for me and I needed a map. When I found the map I realised it wasn?t going to affect me contrary to that I first thought, but if it helps here?s the link to the actual details of what the Council is planning to do. There are a number of ?Covid related? experimental orders going in across the borough. It appears the best way to object until a formal consultation is carried out (likely to be after 9 - 12 months of operation) is to send as many individual comments / letters / emails to your Councillor. If you've signed the petition that will count as 1 view as far as the Council is concerned from what they've said in response to other consultations so even if its just an email to your Councillor saying "I've signed " you might want to do that too if you want your view to be known.

If this works on your phone then Install and use it and encourage others to. Once installed you can pretty much forget about it. Yes there were issues when it first came out but the updates were quick and there?s not been anything in the news in recent days which would indicate any issues are resolved. Every time Apple do an iOS update I wait a week before updating and how many patches do Microsoft issue? Software updates cause issues, this app is no different. I?ve checked into a venue - make sure you scan the NHS QR code not the venue?s own if they had one before. It worked first time for me. Just checked battery usage on my iPhone 6S and the app usage was under 1% so not even recorded. Note this does something different to the Zoe Covid app so please use both.

JohnL fair point it should be top down. Have you told Asda you think a process isn?t in place? Asda should listen if their customer?s feeling is their staff are not told to wear masks - whether they are or not. As a customer tell Asda you?ll shop elsewhere until you feel staff know they should be wearing them (probably not all will all the time even then) that should make them take notice / action. If nothing is said / people keep going somewhere there is no incentive for change and a business won?t tell staff to wear masks. The law and protecting their customers should be enough of a reason but would appear not to be so they need an incentive that gets their attention - losing customers would do it.

There?s never going to be a time when everyone takes the same measures or judges the severity of Covid / flu / driving through a red light / stopping for pedestrians to cross ....the same. If you see something that makes you uncomfortable say if you feel ok about that. A local shop or business appear not to be following measures you think they should - raise it. You might need to do it more than once I raised staff not wearing masks over their noses in Sainsburys and it improved for a few days. Need to do it again but maybe one person remembers and they then prompt someone else. Also you are the customer, say you will be reluctant to go until it changes. Or just do what you feel and maybe others will take note. Since the level went from 3 to 4 I now wear a mask outside - lockdown is the next level and no one wants that. I?m in the minority and don?t expect that to change overnight but I remember my dad saying that when drink driving laws came in it was something that hadn?t been thought about, by the time I learnt to drive most people wouldn?t think to drink and drive but there are still those that do. That?s going to be the same for any Covid measures. My understanding is Council?s are to provide the Covid Marshalls from existing staff / resources so I don?t see how they can make much difference. Surely education is better than enforcement? I doubt East Dulwich would be a priority anyhow - limited resources would need to be targeted.

The weekly email from TfL mentioned it so I think this has started. It only applies to the bits of Lordship Lane that are red routes - near the South Circular I think, definitely not from Goose Green to Blackwater Street (Cafe Nero to William Rose) which have yellow lines and aren?t red routes.

N dulwich northerner I?d not realised about the borough boundary. There is a difference as a visitor to the area looking for parking - isn?t one of the things a CPZ is meant to do to improve parking availability for residents? It did near us. When I need to make a daytime visit to the Herne Hill area there is a choice. You have to find a bay you can pay in that is free in the all day zone or you time your visit and park in the two hour zone outside of the hours it operates. For residents its only other residents and their visitors parking in the all day zone. I chose to time my visit for free parking and went to a couple of shops I wouldn?t have if I?d parked in the all day zone which was closest to where I was going.

Rockets Zone Q is the other side of East Dulwich station and was the first of the East Dulwich zones to be put in. - East Dulwich Grove is in the latest zone. Zone Q went in after 4 consultations and the parking had got worse. We said no to the first 3 consultations but when the fourth came out it was needed. I thought Stradella Road was all day, guess there is a set of bays at the end that I saw the sign for that?s all day. The zone the other side of the bridge opposite Brockwell Park is all day. So Lambeth also have a two hour zone one side of the station and an all day zone the other. Like the zones around East Dulwich there is a mix of a station, residents and businesses so guess there is something that means a two hour zone isn?t going to work in some areas.

The roads closest to the shops in Herne Hill have longer hours, the two hour restriction is a few roads further away. Whoever decided the hours had to look at the bigger picture

As blah blah said we, as individuals, can do things to protect ourselves. After the threat level increased from 3-4 yesterday I?ve decided to wear a mask any time I?m outside. Don?t know about anyone else but as level 5 would mean going back to lockdown anything I can do to help avoid that seems a no brainer. Things could have been clearer along the way but I think its now clear that washing hands, covering your face, social distancing and limiting the number of people you come into contact with reduce opportunities for the virus to transmit. Maybe action could have been taken by the government sooner but there is nothing to stop us, as individuals, doing something before they say or more than they say. The sooner the majority do the sooner we?ll be able to go back to a more normal life as the virus growth rate will meet their measures whether you think they are right or wrong. The increased penalties the government is introducing show they?ve recognised this will not go away if left to unenforceable guidance. To those who say we should be able to do what we want that will happen sooner the more people who take action. Look at the bigger picture.

Looks to me like this is TfL and doesn?t affect the stretch of Lordship Lane with parking. A twenty minute walk back with shopping is doable and families might get exercise and talk rather than jump in the car, kids on their phones the whole time. Some might even prefer it once they try something they?ve not before. We use our cars too much, its too easy. Making it expensive or uncomfortable is sometimes the only way to make people think.

Good on you Jacqui5254 The negative aspects do get more publicity than the positive ones. Yes there are aggressive people but that?s human nature. Most people are reasonable from what I see. If you feel it appropriate ask someone to put on a mask / cover their nose. I?m not always comfortable asking outright. If not you could lead by example. If you are with someone else at the bus stop who you know is reasonable say ?Masks on? as you see the bus approach and maybe someone who might have left it round their neck will pull it up or while waiting for the bus chat about seeing an article that bus drivers have died / people travelling on buses but not covering their noses and mouths are inadvertently spreading the virus or another message you think people need to hear. Someone might think about it later, and there are so many articles, Facebook posts its unlikely you?ll be asked for specifics. Maybe this is a bit naive but those who want to do the right thing might. There is no point trying with some people but the person on the 185 might have just forgotten their mask on the way out that day or might not have thought to take one but will in future and might have mentioned the act of kindness to friends who are now wearing masks / carrying extras. The report on possible extra national restrictions could be a good talking point - if more people had worn masks / social distanced these might not have had to be considered / I hope they?re not necessary but can see they might be the only way given people aren?t following guidance to date.
