former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi redjam, Sorry you've missed out this time. Guess council officers doing it 100m from each proposed crossing. It's always a fine judgement between maximising consultation and cost. Fingers crossed people agree with you and me! -
This application had 27 objections and one supporter from neighbours as per the council officers report pages 163-177 - http://moderngov.southwarksites.com/mgConvert2PDF.aspx?ID=4005&T=10 I've read the officers report and all the oducmentation of the applicant. Street lighting produces light levels of circa 15 lux at the worst affect home and the floodlighting when on will have 1-2 lux falling at that worst affect homes front door. As council officers said 'minimal impact'.

Hi Fatherjack, The councillor Education Scrutiny committee is going to discuss school admissions on 28 June 7pm at Southwark Town Hall. If you have specific examples and it clearly sounds as though you do then can I request that you email the committee chairperson [email protected] so that the committee can investigate all issues. Hi redjam, I'm afraid you're outside the consultation area of from memory 250m radious from Lordship Lane. Hi Freddy1929, The planned rollout of food waste recycling is Autumn. So you might want to share a brown bin for food waste. BUT the non food waste will be collected fortnightly. So probably best to see how it works out and then if you decide you only need one green wheelie bin call 020 7525 2000 and ask for the spare one to be removed. You'll also have the oppotunity to have a blue wheelie bin for all your recyclables. Probably best to for your two flats to start with one blue wheelie bin and then request another if you both find you need them. On Lordship Lane I'll pass on your kind comments to the council officials concerned - thanks for taking the trouble to make them. -

After council officers challenged SGN about the length of works it transpires two main phases each with two sub phases: 18/07/2011 - 09/11/2011 Norcroft Gardens to 206 25/07/2011 - 31/10/2011 Peckham Rye to 42 24/10/2011 - 24/02/2012 42 to 126 04/11/2011 - 17/02/2012 126 to 206 Southern Gas Networks have now told ocuncil officials they have a 15 year plan. I've asked the chair of the Dulwich Community Council whether we can invite SGN to talk about that plan and its impacton our area ASAP. SGN have been 'invited' to visit council officials to explain why they can't compress the works or as I requested why if more works were done in the summer its wouldn't be quicker. -
St johns and St Clements bulge class
James Barber replied to cff9's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I've asked the chair of the councillors Education scrutiny committee Cllr David Hubber to look into this which has agreed to do and he intends to investigate at their next meeting 28 June 7pm Southwark Town Hall. If anyone has useful information or experiences about this years buldge classes please email [email protected] and ideally CC me [email protected] as I hope to attend this meeting. If you'd like to attend please contact me and I'll explain how to do this. -

Two interesting planning applications that i've requested to be decided by local councillors: 11-AP-1705 Foresters Arms (The Bishop) pub, 25-27 Lordship Lane. Advertisement consent for 12m x 8m advertising hoarding on the scaffolding while they redevelop the building. 11-AP-1730 Shell Service Station, 112-122 Gipsy Hill. College ward Police have told me in the past that this and the other Shell Service station on Crystal Palace Parade are circa 20% of all crime inthe area. Any comments about these application should be emailed to [email protected] -
St johns and St Clements bulge class
James Barber replied to cff9's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Renata, Earlier in this thread you indicated a lot of lost applications in the post from Dog Kennel Hill. You're now saying lots of late applicationds - which implies 60+ from the wider East Dulwich area. This all looks very odd. We would only get so many late applications if Southwark has unlearnt the lessons from 2009. Guess we're all keen to see what council officials have to say..... -

As East Dulwich cllrs we've been asked whether we think the community would like a gap before more Southern Gas Network (SGN) after the extended event Lordship Lane disruption. The next planned works are 20 July To November Norcroft Gardens to 208 Friern Roas and 20 July to October Peckham Rye to 40 Friern Road. 16 weeks seems outlandish and I've queried this length of works. The former would include Etherow Street which has the entrance to St.Anthony's RC school and requested that any worksonly last and take place during school holidays to maximise child safety and disruption during the busiest traffic periods. What do you think? -
St johns and St Clements bulge class
James Barber replied to cff9's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I've contacted the Southwark admissions team to ask why a buldge class is required at St. Johns and Bessemer as well as already announced at Goose Green and Dulwich Village Infants. They've told me it will take 10 days to respond presumably with the logic of the decision - this is really worrying as the ligic must have been crystal clear when the decision was taken and should just be a cut and paste job of what was proposed to the cabinet member councillor. 2010 lots of critiscm announcing the allocations so late. This year they're announced much earlier and clearly got it completely wrong if we need an extra 2 bulge classes with such short notice. As queried earlier in this thread - what schools are left to bulge next year? The only one I can think of is Langbourne - that would only be accepted by most if it guaranteed a place at Kingsdale which it doesn't yet. Most school grounds/playgrounds arent big enoguh to take temp classrooms. As soon as I have a clear explanation of why what seems without more info bizarre decisions have been taken I'll post it here. -

Hi Peckhamboy, Grove Vale - the latest is that the proposed changes have been hugely changed and the raised treatment will no longer happen. Shame when I requested this I was ignored last year and it took an 800 person petition for common sense to prevail. Sadly in an attempt to please the council leader has stated he'll look into a bus layby at the bus stop outside 50 Grove Vale. Such laybys cause buses delays. Hopefully council officers will successfully explain he's proposing to bugger up all bus journeys northbound through East Dulwich. -

Burglary on Barry Rd (May 29th)
James Barber replied to biancason's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Tonyquinn, Clearly keeping a local police station means police are more locally present when things like burglaries etc occur on local roads such as Barry Road. You don't seem to know of the ED Police station recent history or the decision making bodies involved for London Police stations. The Met Police is controlled by the Met Police Authority and the Mayor of London and they make the decisions. The original proposal to close it was made when Ken Livingston was the London Mayor. It has been implied under Boris Johnson's mayoral term when it started and more recently. We have a London election in 2012 so I'd be surprised if it closes betweem now and May 2012 and I'm hopeful we'll be able to get mayoral candidates to pledge to keep local Police stations open. However, something will need to happen to ED Police station as the attached photo shows it has concrete cancer. Equally the old ED Polcie station junction of Crystal Palace Road with Upland Road should be sold if capital receipts is the issue. Ideally the old police station would be used for a couple of years while the current one is repalced. Proabably the ground floor kept for the Polce and other local publci services and floors above for apartments. ideal would be a S106 providing a front Police station counter with a long lease from the police ot house officers there and the semi commercial rent pays for the front desk to be opened. WRT the First Road Hill traffic plans. I've requested them and will chase as it has taken a long time to not have them to forward them to you. -

To reiterate. The more people that respond to this survey the less likely they'll lthink they can close our Police station with such active residents. -

Hi Fuschia, If you email me the picture at [email protected] I'll make sure it goes to the manager resonpsibile for parking enforcement. Would be useful to add commentary of time, date and confirming the vehicles was stationary etc. Do you think school drop and pick up a particualr problem that needs some visits fro mthe smart car? -

DJKilla, I think at this point its clear we disagree. UV pens are largely to aid the return of stolen goods to the rightful owners unless stickers are placed on entrance doors etc. They cost ?1.49 per kit retail which reflects the relative merits compared to Selectadna which retails at ?55 per kit and is considered to provide much better evidence and thus much better deterence/crime prevention. I'm sure the leaflets are useful and lots more information on the web as well. Please don't get me wrong. I think its great that the Peckham Rye ward SNT have these UV marker pens and are distributing them. I think its a shame they don't have the best product on the market and that they can't give that best product out for free. I'm chuffed to bits in East Dulwich we can. -

The Alleyns planning application for flood lighting of it hockey all weather pitch will go to the main planning committee next tuesday the 14th 7pm at the town hall. I'm tempted to go along and support it as it it would be one of the few lit all weather pitches in the area and closest to ED. -

Apologies Jeremy. DJKilla posted that other wards also had crime prevention kits and I knew this to be incorrect. Poor excuse to be allow myself to be riled about past political choices of others. -
Hi DJKilla queen, The councils call centre was established several years prior to 2006. I stood and was elected in 2006. No year has seen Southwark Council spend ?100M setting up the call centre in a private company. I don't know how much it costs to run the call centre each year but revealingly Southwark Labour have made no proposals to close it or insource it.

So I was correct that only East Dulwich ward locally has full property marker kits due to East Dulwich Lib Dem councillors over a number of years allocating roughly a fifth of all the money at our discretion to crime prevention measures. DJKillaQueen, I'm sure the UV marker pens and leaflets help but quite the same as SelectaDNA property marking kits. And yes I am political with this. Politics is about choices. I think local tory and Labour councillors over a number of years have made choices to NOT support crime prevention - soft on the causes of crime. I'm more hopeful that if a further round of Cleaner, Greener, Safer funding should occur we'll persuade them to back crime prevention. -

Apologies dbboy, Hardening a home is about upgrading the locks, putting locks on windows, london and manchester bars on doors ie making it harder to break into a home. Hi DJKillaQueen, What's in the kits you've mentioned - please don't say Smartwater property marking as that has a short shelf life. Hi catma, I will find out about all local wards and what they offer and report back. -
Hi Julie, It might be helpful if you used the auto signature so everyone can be clear you're speaking as a council official and 'in the know'.
