Why are no cycle lanes being put in on East dulwich
Nigello replied to Jakido's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I find it hard to envisage two cycle lanes (one on each side) in EDG, which is not that wide and has double-deckers and other large vehicles going in both directions, especially rush hours. Is there a danger that accommodating cycle lanes could make it more perilous for the (much) bigger number of users/passengers - eg. pushing large vehicles towards the centre of the road by at least 18" on each side? -
The computer system which allows you to book, review and cancel sessions in the gym and pool for all the centres in Southwark is down, and has been for more than 24 hours. Perhaps it was demand that caused it to fall over? Whatever the cause, it's not working and the reception is impossible to reach by phone.

I agree. An individual can both make a change and make a point simply by picking up litter and not caring if others are watching. It may trigger something in a potential litterer or potential litter picker-upper.

The PR Councillors are rubbish, at least in the bog-standard-reply-to-short-email department. I think the council treats that part of the borough contemptuously.

The council ought to take into the account factors such as fewer people travelling into work and fewer people being able to afford to buy new bicycles before committing money to the more expensive aids to encouraging people to cycle. Why spend all that money on, say, raised kerbs, etc. when there are likely not going to be as high a number of users as in a non-pandemic situation. By all means, encourage, but do so only after all factors are taken into account. (As for waste - the on-road perforated kerbs and removable posts to extend pavements outside schools are beginning to disintegrate and disappear, respectfully. Nobody CBA, as far as I can see, to make sure this makeshift measure is upkept, so the money that was invested is not getting the same kind of payback as was originally planned.) -

Yes, as I said, segregation is good (in this case) so if the bus lane, with its 6 foot+ width and nice, thick line already provides such separation, performative road painting will be both pointless and wasteful. -
After I had complained to the DV councillor (one of them) and to the park officials, extra bins were put in. My suggestion to double up the smaller bins at pinch points wasn't heeded, as wasn't putting up posters on the bins already there to get people to take the rubbish away with them. Gail's could burnish its credentials by sending out a staff member (on their time, not volunteering) to tidy up once or twice a week, but maybe they don't see the value of that as much as the value of their ?5 breads and ?3 coffees?

Rye Lane is like something out of Quatermass and The Pit at times. It is lacking life from the station downwards to the Rye, especially in the mornings and after shopping hours. It is covered in scrawl (though the odd bit is art) and with no buses it looks even more neglected and lifeless. The trendies will move on soon - to Catford or Deptford or wherever else becomes with-it so don't depend on the youth pound to aid regeneration. Goodness knows what the local councillors and officers are doing to boost footfall and aid retail. Nothing, it seems. (I wrote to the MP but as I do not live in that ward she could not help me, due to rules. Fair enough but the problem remains.)

Why is a cycle lane needed? Are there not bus lanes already to provide a cycle route by default? Please do not waste money if it is a case of doubling up. It is just performative nonsense. If, though, there are not already lines for buses/taxis/cycles, it may be a good idea, but haven't we got to the point, or near it, that most people who will have thought of cycling will have taken it up? Ie. where else can money be spent to achieve the goal of less congestion and noxious emissions? -

Car drivers/owners who point blank refuse to park up the extremes of the parking areas are so annoying. So much time is spent looking for car parking spaces - why leave a gap at the white line when there is already maneouvering room built in? -
M and S in the gold packet is good.

Great pic, Maple - where are you? I hear some raptors like areas nearer to PR Park, Dawson's Hill, etc.

How long to get a date for 2nd vaccine? *Update*

I was phoned up a good two weeks ahead of schedule for the second jab from the TJC and was done a few hours later. I am glad they are thinking of ways of pushing ahead and avoiding waste, etc. -
Tessa Jowell Centre: Reserve List ?
Nigello replied to ed_pete's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Just go down and ask the jab receptionist whether you could be put on a reserve list, saying how long it would take you to get there, etc. I think having your NHS number may help - it's just a bit quicker and may dispose the person to you a bit better, you never know. -
Bottom line - prepare yourself for a day or two of chills, aches and general zonked-outness and if not, then that's a bonus. (There are those who say that preparing yourself for such, though, heightens the chance you will feel the side effects or even invent them, but take your pick.)

Maybe it was meant to be "yappy"?

Bus lanes are segregated from much of the traffic so they can be used by cyclists. The quiet routes on back roads are chosen for their relative lack of traffic so they don?t need to be painted. If you?ve got functioning lights, a bell and reflective clothing that will help maintain safety (though so many cyclists dispense with one or more of those, unfortunately). -
Some useful info related to Southwark, traffic, LTNs etc
Nigello replied to legalalien's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
At least 12 ?hard-core? cyclists in DV, merrily ignoring red lights (as usual). It?s a hive mentality. Poor show from people who likely are seen and see themselves as middle-class, professional men of a certain age. (Everyone can break traffic rules: it?s not only younger people, is my point.) -
- no more pollarding in Southwark till Nov.

The interview Mishal H did with him on Today, around 08:35 was good. Some politicians I find foolish but in him, I see prowess and ability but cunning and a chilling-ness.

Goose Green councillors - how can we help?
Nigello replied to jamesmcash's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
London Mayor is a vanity post. It has no real power, at least when compared to great world cities like NYC. All these layers of politicians serve politicians, mainly, and their supporters. I am minded not to vote. -
On the other hand, postcard from SE22 to Sapporo, Japan took 4 days, SE22 to Germany took 2 days...

Yes, maybe a jay, but it seemed smaller. Anyway, unlikely to be anything rare.

I am betting on either Calton or Court being reopened. Having both closed and the restrictions at morning and afternoon school peak hours in the Village itself are super-serving. One measure could be enough and then, if they really want to turn up the pressure, introduce another later. Also, a bus along Court Lane (electric, so quiet) would be great, especially if it were hail-and-ride to take folk from Herne Hill to LL.
