Great motorbike finale in the globe of death ( a bit like a wall of death but, you know, a globe), an incredible contortionist, really impressive acrobats, jugglers, chain swingers, knife throwers, Norman the ring master and his troupe of budgies... OK, yes, the horses too - some people don't agree with it at all, others are a bit more equivocal - it didn't seem to me like the horses were doing something particularly likely to cause then harm but I am no expert and I don't speak horseish so can't ask them directly and it is a small ring for them to be working in. If you are interested in going you should be able to find a discount code - try ZIP30 for 30% off, which has been advertised officially. They would struggle to put together something uglier and less in keeping with the area. Not that I suppose that matters to the developers. As for the hair products emporium, it was originally a Victorian era stables with the subsequent addition of some WW2 bomb damage, as with much of the area. Not art deco. But still lovelier than what is being proposed.

Southwark used to allow vans. If it was a commercial van then you'd have to go to a commercial waste disposal site. But if it was a hire van they would ask for ID/address (driving licence or similar) and check what you were dumping to satisfy themselves it wasn't commercial waste. Lambeth sites have had (and enforced) a NO VANS rule for at least a couple of years. Not sure about Lewisham, but they are stricter than Southwark about what they will take (no rubble, no garden soil/stones). If you want to get rid of household or garden waste, use a car. The increase in fly tipping started with the introduction of a hefty charge for bulk waste. Every further restriction on getting rid of waste results in greater temptation for people to dump it illegally. And everybody ends up paying for it that way (unless it ends up on private property and then it is the hapless owner who gets stung).

It's a Wetherspoon's ( and therefore for those who are not boycotting JDW establishments for their boss's Brexiteering) in an old 1920s/30s picture palace. Fantastic interior, though it still smells unmistakably of Wetherspoon's - smelly food and stale beer, all worked into an old carpet for a decade or so until ripe. Apparently JDW are going to be selling it so make the most of it while you can. BigED

I thought the old Iceland had plenty of characters, worldwiser. I really hope some of those characters get round to spending as much quality time in M&S - but they won't get 4 pints of milk for 75p or 6 free range "large" eggs for 80p (note to self - must remember the plight of the UK dairy industry).

Will they have an Iceland? I do hope so.

Or get a 185 to Oval then the Northern Line to Goodge St/Warren St. It's ok but the bus is slow at peak time and the route is very susceptible to delays for roadworks (or accidents, breakdowns etc) along Camberwell New Road.

A long time ago, in the first few years I lived in ED, I had a wing mirror smashed off one car. Fast forward a couple of years and my "new" car was found one evening outside my home up on bricks, the wheels pinched. And less than a month later, while I was away, a tow truck came and stole the rest of the car very quickly one morning - no attempt to find the owner of the vehicle with its tax disc, no attempt to knock on any doors; they just smashed the side windows, ran a chain through it, hauled it up onto the truck and drove off with the car hanging slightly over the edge. All this was seen by a neighbour who got the name of the company on the truck but didn't have time to see the licence plate. It was reported to an unusually useless PC at ED Police Station. Despite having details of time, location, company, he made no inroads into locating the vehicle. Better still, he just phoned the company to mention it to them - so, you know, if any of your blokes picked up a car they shouldn't have, best to lose it quickly. (My other experiences with ED Police Station were much more helpful and I am sorry to see it gone, but that bloke was an eejit). Anyway, low level crime in ED - nothing new about it. Don't get me started on the graffiti and coming home to find "F*** your mum" painted on the wall. As for fuel theft - a lockable petrol cap would help (why don't manufacturers design them like that?). And a bike cover.

Thanks to everyone who came along - a great afternoon was had by all. And thanks to The Goose Is Out for (once again) organising the music, to the musicians (The Relatives, Ben Holland, The Bara Bara Band and, rocking the end of the party, John McClean and The Clan) who gave their time in return only for liquid refreshment, to the DJs, to the organisers and helpers, face-painters, balloon-doggers, bunting-makers and gazebo-erecters. Of course the SNP vote on so-called "English matters". It's because a lot of Scottish funding is linked to funding in England (or England and Wales), so they have a clear vested interest in the outcome of votes that may affect funding for Scotland. What I wonder about is why the Conservatives and their rich non-dom press-baron friends are bigging up Nicola Sturgeon at the same time as they demonise her. Anyone would think they really want the SNP to do well (almost entirely at the expense of Labour) while giving them a new stick with which to beat Miliband. Whiloe this may work, it has a downside in a close election - the LibDems will lose almost all of their Scottish seats making it harder for the Tories to put together a workable majority without getting into bed with the northern Irish unionists and UKIP (one MP, tops). Poster war in ED (the bits I have seen) - Lib Dem 2, Labour 2, Green 1, Con 0

This thread seems a bit - well, lifeless. While there has been plenty of sniping about previous extensive threads on the subject of aircraft noise (which helps me get back to sleep so I can't see what the fuss is about anyway), the discussion is lacking a bit of oomph. Maybe some reference to, I don't know, newbies perhaps, or blow-ins. Where have you gone dear Louisa? East Dulwich turns its lonely eyes to you...
