This record looks like it mentions the siege in Barry Road; Metropolitan Police Gallantry Awards 1939 - 1945 http://www.historybytheyard.co.uk/gallantry_list_1939-1945.htm

Yes Otta that's the one...I wonder if I remember your sister. Girls Brigade was held every Thursday night I think in Honor Oak Baptist Church.

Great thread; I remember the white lady walking along Upland Road, as a child she always used to scare me, recently spotted in Camberwell and she appears much better/less whiter. I remember the lovely chips from the Chinese takeaway behind the Police Station. I remember the Levi man's shop behind the Police Station - me, my sister and my male friend went there, waited out back (I think for friend to try on some Levis), and even as a child things didn't quite add up! - especially as it was so near to the Police Station:) I remember the shoe shop next to Barry's shop on Barry Road(my school friend Lorna's dad owned it). I remember Mona Lisa being filmed at the Upland Road Garages and being invited to appear in it. I remember the Salvation Army Band playing around Mundania & surrounding Roads etc...the Girls and Boys Brigade in Honor Oak Baptist Church and I remember when Dulwich Baths was used as Public Baths.....the good ole days eh:)

Does anyone remember the lovely security man that worked in Woolworths in Peckham - he was almost part of the fixtures and fittings having worked there with a smile for many years.

Consultation on banning cash payment on TfL buses
Laur replied to Mugglesworth's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Safety is a major concern as some people have the need to take 2 buses. For e.g the route 12 from West End to Dulwich Plough, then you may have to change to a 197 or 185 for the rest of your journey. Or from Kings Cross the 63 takes you to Honor Oak and you may have to change to get the 363 to Crystal Palace. The debit allowance allows you one bus ride, you end up stranded at night at Honor Oak, the oyster shop closes early evening and you have no way of getting home? Frightening prospect for a woman or for the vulnerable....the thread "followed on FHR" springs to mind. -
Diverted 63 bus route - Marmora & Therapia Roads
Laur replied to OD's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I agree with 'Marmora Man'.....it's 3 months and was not a problem during the previous diversions when 63 route masters diverted along Mundania road and other nearby roads. I lived there for 30 years & as Marmora Man says rightly so those houses survived the Blitz so " Keep calm and carry on" :) -
Diverted 63 bus route - Marmora & Therapia Roads
Laur replied to OD's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Some years back (late 80s, early 1990s) the 63 bus route was diverted along Mundania Road. It was weird looking out of your window and seeing a big double decker bus pass :) -
Rowhill Grange, Botleigh Grange, Burnham Beeches, Nutfield Priory Hotel & Spa or in London K West, Sofitel Spa in St James Hotel in Piccadilly.

Thanks for that KPR, yes it's great to have a memorial, I shall look out for it next time I'm passing.
-
KPR, where is the plaque at the Coop? Is it at the site of the old Coop / junction of Shawbury Road? I'd be interested to know as my great aunt was shopping in there just before the V1 bomb struck?

I agree Doreen Lawrence should get a peerage. "Doreen Lawrence has campaigned tirelessly for justice for her 18-year-old son Stephen, who was stabbed to death after being set upon by a gang of white youths while waiting at a bus stop in south London in 1993. She founded the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust to support young people from ethnic minority backgrounds to pursue their ambitions, and has been chosen to sit on Home Office and police panels". A Labour source said: "Doreen Lawrence is a hero of modern Britain. The strength and courage she has shown in her fight for justice for her son Stephen has had a profound impact on attitudes to racism and policing. Her campaigning has changed, and will continue to change, our country for the better. "Ed Miliband believes voices like hers should always be heard in Parliament."

V1 & V2 Bombs dropped on Lordship Lane.

Does anyone remember Bettys Fish and Chip shop which was located round the corner from East Dulwich Foxtons. My grandmother used to take my mum there and as Betty wrapped the fish up she would praise her own fish and say " look at that lovely fish" :) -
Will PM you

You're welcome dimples, 101 have given a reference number for it so that at least it's recorded in case anything does happen in the future. P.S Sorry about the vague description but it's better than no description at all. (Also it was by this vague description & the location that he was hanging out at that the 3 different women recognised him from).

During one evening last week 2 young girls were followed up Overhill Road by a man who suddenly saw them and diverted his route to follow them. Yesterday evening I saw a similiar looking man walking up Overhill Road from Lordship Lane, where he suddenly stopped in the direction that he was going, slowly crossed over and appeared to loiter without purpose as he looked down the alleyway that links Overhill Road to Melford Road. He then retraced his walk back to Lordship Lane in the direction that he orginally came from. Later yesterday evening a similar looking man was seen glaring into a female friends car as she was parked at the entrance of the Melford Road alley waiting for her to exit the car, which she didn't. Annyway even though he hasn't yet done anything, he could be an opportunitist. He has been reported to 101 but I thought that I would let everyone know as I would feel awful if something did happen x Description: Black guy, 5ft 8 - 6ft tall, age 20-30s, grey hooded top with another top over, dark trousers & on another day green trousers - Sorry not much of a description!

Child hit by car (she's fine), Lordship lane with upland
Laur replied to lotita's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
On page 4 of today's Southwark News it reports that Southwark Police said "they had no record of the incident". I hope that this is incorrect and that for the records that this was reported.
