It was early evening. Late summer. There were three of us in the house, all grown-ups, and our visit was business-related. The house was empty and had been for some time. No electricity. Some furniture had been left throughout the building. The curtains were still in place and had been partly or wholly drawn in some rooms. It was a dark house anyway. In the top room the curtains were open however. It was a double bed. We'd walked passed it on entering the room, drawn towards the window to look out over the Rye. There was no noise, not a sound, but something wasn't right. None of us uttered a word and as we turned our heads simultaneously there she was in the bed... slowly sitting up as if rising from the grave. Of course we had to run, not looking back. Piercing terror. This was in 2008 and I have never had cause to go back, and wouldn't want to.
