Cat People - How to stop other cats spraying in my house ?
Robert Poste's Child replied to threadders's topic in The Lounge
To the cats I think that may be a minor consideration. -
Cat People - How to stop other cats spraying in my house ?

Because my user name refers to one of the finest female fictional creations of all time. Despite being slightly over the hill I'm happy to report that my hand/eye coordination is still pretty good. -
Cat People - How to stop other cats spraying in my house ?
Robert Poste's Child replied to threadders's topic in The Lounge
After a thread a while back I now have a couple of old washing up liquid bottles standing by the back door, filled with early morning pee specimens and a soupcon of raw garlic, and I send a quick spray towards cats that want to use my garden as a public convenience. I also spray it around the gate posts. There's a lot less cat and fox poo to clear up these days. -

The original Q is a bit simplistic (other than as a way to make drivers more likely to accept cyclists as fellow road users, which is maybe the idea). Car drivers' road tax wouldn't cover the cost of roads: roads are mostly paid for by other forms of tax. As most cyclists are also tax payers, they are already contributing. And what about the cyclists who are also car owners - should they pay twice, when cycling would mean they're using the road less than if they relied on their car alone? If this is a serious proposition, would you extend it to make pedestrians pay road tax to cover the maintenance of pavements, pedestrian crossings, underpasses etc, which after all are for their sole use?

Dinah Maria Mulock, from 'A Life for a Life': 'Oh, the comfort ? the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person ? having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together; certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.'

According to the first message he asked direct a month ago and they didn't do anything. He hasn't 'slagged off' Foxtons other than stating the particular problem he's having. It doesn't seem that unreasonable.

I sympathise with the OP; using a child's name is clearly wrong, even if it's by mistake, and you'd think they'd jump to fix the problem. I don't understand why estate agents are so lax in their use of personal data. I know someone who regularly gets letters from local estate agents saying they are contacting her as a previous buyer/vendor, potential buyers interested in a house like yours, blah blah, but she lives in a street that's 100% owned by the Dulwich Estate, so not only has she never been on their database as a buyer or vendor, no one has ever bought or sold a property in the entire street.

1980s TV Themes Suitable for Whistling

Was it also used for a public information film earlier than that? I have a vague memory of something in the 70s. -
Best cycle route to Greenwich?
Robert Poste's Child replied to Robert Poste's Child's topic in The Lounge
Much of the centre of Greenwich and Thames path were cordoned off, and there were hordes of people, but plenty of marshals to keep everyone in order and still a good afternoon out. The tall ships bring the history of Greenwich and the Thames to life in a way I hadn't anticipated. For anyone else who hasn't yet cycled that way, like a lot of journeys in London it actually feels nearer by bike, and you get to see bits that you wouldn't from a bus (partly due to poor map-reading skills in my case). -
Best cycle route to Greenwich?

Thanks. Have sandwich and apple so all set. -
Planning to cycle to Greenwich later to see some of the tall ships and would be grateful for suggested cycle routes from anyone who's done it before. Thanks.

Or you blurt something so inane it wouldn't be out of place on the Inbetweeners, then get a forced smile stuck on your face because all potential conversation is now dead. If it wasn't for alcohol the English would have died out by now.

Shaking rugs and blankets out of window
Robert Poste's Child replied to Mustard's topic in The Lounge
As you say, it may be normal for them. I would try having a word direct - you can get away with a lot if you do it with humour and a smile on your face - and if that doesn't work speak to the council. I've been known to shake rugs out of the window and also fold sheets that way as if you're on the small side it's difficult at ground level. -
Possible Abuse of Disabled Parking Badge
Robert Poste's Child replied to Mrs TP's topic in The Lounge
Perhaps he's having some problems that aren't so obvious to a non-disabled person? I would try a direct approach: explain nicely that you've noticed he's parking outside your house a lot, leaving the disabled space empty, and ask if he's having any problems with his space and if there's anything you can do to help. At least then you'll know he knows it's been noticed and you can escalate if necessary. Better than doing something that to him might look like playing games as that could rebound on you. -
It may not be in aid of anything. It's a lot easier these days to get permission to close your street for an afternoon. Maybe they're just being neighbourly. Whatever the cause, my guess is yes to bunting and cupcakes.

If Brockwell was 25 degrees I'd be using it most days but it usually seems to be about 20.

The big difference in the last few years is the words that people have come up with to make buying second-hand stuff sound like an ideologically based lifestyle choice that makes you superior to other people. The one that makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck is 'upcycle' - second-hand but better because tarted up and no longer being used for its original purpose.

Not sure this counts as there's more than one pot involved but it's very quick and easy. For when you have leftover smoked haddock (I overcater to make sure). Wilt some spinach and press out the liquid. At the same time, poach or scramble two eggs. Toast two crumpets or light rye bread. Assemble in two stacks: crumpet, spinach, haddock, egg, topped with a spoon of real mayonnaise if you have it and maybe some snipped chives. Takes 5-10 mins.

To be fair it was pretty loud before the film started. I thought it might be a fair or a special event and only realised when I walked through the park. It only happens a few times a summer though and it doesn't go on that late so for me it seems OK.

Tiny Little Things That Cause You Irrational Rage
Robert Poste's Child replied to PinkyB's topic in The Lounge
According to the Metro today, one of the founders of the ice-bucket challenge has drowned. While of course on a human level that's very sad, as an example of tragic irony it's nothing short of splendid.
