  1. Between me and his mother? Not that I know of.
  2. Thanks for all the sympathetic comments. Hadn't thought of Asda.
  3. I agree the ones cycling fast on the pavement are a menace and need to be stopped.
  4. Reminds me of the London cabbie's guide to traffic lights, as per the Not the Nine O'clock News calendar circa 1981: Green means go Amber means go Red means accelerate, paying particular attention to steering
  5. Some cyclists are going round by the pavement because it's safer when you have a load of aggressive, impatient drivers revving behind you. I get the impression it's happening mainly from Turney Rd into Calton Ave as the offset adds to the danger, and from Calton Ave where the usual three lanes have been reduced to one at peak times. It's understandable, and in my view reasonable as long as you either get off or go at child walking pace.
  6. So much for the police having a regular, accessible presence in the library and supermarkets as we were promised when the police station closed.
  7. BTW, this has made me realise how utterly helpless and unsupported you are as a victim of crimes that don't involve violence, lots of money or something media-worthy. Another example of how ordinary people count for nothing other than as the politician's favourite placebo phrase 'hardworking families'. The Victim Support website doesn't even include theft in its list of crimes.
  8. Or they could do what they should have done in the first place: scrutinise the works schedule and reduce the time by five months.
  9. A cyclist has ridden around the world in 79 days, beating the previous world record by 44 days. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-41308524 That's about the same amount of time I've been waiting so far for GWR to refund the cost of a ticket for a journey of one hour twenty minutes that took two hours too long. Despite all my attempts to get them to take action it's just one fob-off or delaying tactic after another, and right now it looks like it could easily take as long again. Dismal service.
  10. I'm not shelling out for the 'occupational lenses' (aka bifocals) this time either.
  11. A downside of living somewhere with a strong community feel is it's easy to forget you're in London, with all that goes with it. Still can't see why anyone but me would want my manky old non-designer Mrs-Potato-Head glasses, though.
  12. Yes, I'm filling in with some by-products that look like they came from the milk bottle factory. I ended up at Specsavers at Clapham junction where a lovely chap called Aaron couldn't have been nicer if I were his own mother.
  13. The manager said they'd look at the CCTV footage later and they've got the description of the person. It sounds like it happens a lot, as at DLC. I guess any public building with lots of people coming and going, and children running around, offers easy pickings.
  14. Thanks. Off to Clapham where there's a Boots. From memory not a good one but should be OK.
  15. Yes, shocking news. All best wishes to her and her family.
  16. I posted a thread in the main section after my glasses were stolen in the library this morning. Can anyone recommend a reasonably local optician that can get glasses made up quickly, ie not 1-2 weeks' wait? I got my last ones in Kingston and don't have time to get over there or to wait that long. Thanks.
  17. I was working in the library this morning as there are builders upstairs from me making a lot of noise. When I popped to the loo quickly someone stole my glasses. Such a pointless crime and I can't imagine what was in it for the person unless they were trying to make someone else's life difficult. They were non-designer and 18 months old but I need them to be able to read or look at a screen, I work freelance and I don't have a spare pair. It was a quiet morning and the corner I was sitting in was empty most of the time I was there so (fortunately) I took my bag and laptop with me but left my power lead, jacket, earplugs and glasses to let people know someone was coming back. When I came back a woman (60s, stocky, short black weave, darker complexion) was sitting at the other table and immediately started to get her things together in a panicky way and rushed off. I immediately noticed my glasses were missing and called after her had she picked them up by mistake. She made a big thing of showing me her own glasses and made a quick exit. I let the staff know and although it's a petty crime I'm going to report it as the library is a hotspot for this kind of thing and chances are she may be doing it regularly. If you're going to the library or local cafes, please watch your stuff.
  18. You probably have to be paying fees to get that kind of approach to discipline.
  19. I wore the gloves with fingers today rather than the fingerless ones. Also got long socks + Docs on but feet still feel cold. Considering hats.
  20. This is just my personal opinion, but it feels as though a decision had already been made to support an agenda and the 'consultation' was a PR exercise manipulated to support that decision and fool locals into thinking their views were forming part of a collective decision-making process. If you're not genuinely taking people's views into account, spending some of their taxes on a consultation starts to look like adding insult to injury.

I'm saving my panfortes for the colder weather. They somehow don't taste right when it's still warm.
  22. I asked google. Apparently for sloes the advice used to be wait for a frost as that makes the skins start to burst open, but depends on the weather so now they just say pick when ripe. Maybe that's why you have to prick them? For medlars it's leave on the tree unless there's a risk of frost, pick when unripe when they're too tart to be edible (bleurgh), then store for two to three weeks until they go brown and start to soften but aren't actually rotting (double bleurgh). Sounds like a lot of bother, doesn't it. For sprouts it's pick after the first or second frost. I do love a sprout.
  23. Don't you have to wait till after the first frost before picking sloes? Or am I confusing them with sprouts? (Visions of sprout-flavoured gin, mmm...)
