  1. What's wrong with the slightly tired shopfront? Has anyone pointed out that you can't judge a book by its cover?? I think it's a pretty good bookshop - always has something of interest on the table and they are friendly staff, in a bookish kind of way which I guess is to be expected. Why do we need Lordship Lane to have uniformly shiny frontages? More of clone town Britain.
  2. "I personally am tired of the nanny state intervening with a kind of enforced discrimination that is supposed to redress the balance re. our racist/sexist/homophobic/whatever past". The 'Nanny state' aka Southwark Council will be quite rightly responding to the fact that when they look at their stats, they see very few women and even fewer from ethnic minorities using their facilities. What would you suggest they do? I personally dislike the ubiquitous accusations of 'nanny state' (largely pushed by the likes of Rupert Murdoch) although it is a perennial problem and has been around since debates about public health issues like seatbelts and motorcycle helmets, I'm sure accusations of 'heavy handed state intervention' were also used to resist abolition of slavery, votes for women... I'm sure people can think of other attempts to create a fairer world that have been met with this brand of conservatism.
  3. It is hugely improved by being in and called Peckham
  4. I agree with Bob! I was digging into the back of the wardrobe for something Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen might wear - and which I did in the 70s...what about my lady friend, what should she wear??
  5. Help! Can anyone advise what to wear if stated dress code is 'Lounge suit'???? Not strictly an ED issue but the event is quite local!
  6. You could go and speak to the squatters first??? Just an idea. By the way, how do you know they are squatters?
  7. A fairly mixed experience then! Fron supercilious/ungracious (or less gracious than others) to lovely and really helpful, and lots of pats on the back for the rather famous George. It is very likely it was the weekend when I was there (several times) so I suppose I will have to put what I interpreted to be rudeness down to cluelessness!
  8. Has anyone else had an unpleasant experience in Mrs Robinson? They do have some quite good stuff, but the 'customer relations' makes you feel like you are frankly just a little wanting in the style department to be frequenting their shop, and would you please go away and make way for someone whose appearance is more acceptable...we do like to keep up appearances after all...am I alone in this treatment??
