  1. Thanks for the kind words Rahrah and HappyFamily! Most dog owners that I know and that we meet out in parks and streets are like you guys - considerate and mindful of other people (esp. children) and with well behaved and absolutely lovely dogs! Hopefully, if my son meets a couple of nice, gentle dogs, he'll be all right! :)
  2. Many thanks to the two guys and their dog who scared the crap out of my three year old son yesterday on Peckham Rye. The dog came out of nowhere, jumped all around my son and barked loudly. They were about the same size. The dog's two owners said to me "Don't worry, he just wants to play". Well, why are you telling *me* this? Instead, why not try to explain it to my crying three year old son? He now seems utterly terrified of all dogs. The dog then left my crying son (who clearly didn't want to "play") and ran off to another little child (sitting on a picnic blanket) and did the same thing, with the same result. Thanks, well done guys! Cheers.
  3. Here is some info: https://www.gov.uk/smoke-control-area-rules From the page: *Outdoor ovens, burners and barbecues* You can use outdoor barbecues, chimineas, fireplaces or pizza ovens. Any of these appliances that release smoke through a chimney of a building - eg a summerhouse - can only burn authorised fuel or must be exempt.
  4. Someone in your circle of friends perhaps has a wood burning stove?
  5. One thing I never understood is why estate agents don't put a QR code on those signs. So that you could just snap it with your phone and navigate straight to their web page with the relevant details. Estate agents == Luddites?
  6. Thanks!! Went to SARP, excellent service, great guy, phone as good as new. Thirty squids for an iPhone 4. Big thumbs up for SARP!
  7. Can anyone recommend a place where you can get a cracked iphone screen replaced? Ideally somewhere in the local area. Also trying to get an idea of cost. Trying to refurb an old iPhone 4 for my son but don't want to spend a fortune! Thanks!
  8. Thanks! I'm aware of this feature, I just keep forgetting to do it :)

    Ask Admin

Hello Admin! Thanks for a fantastic forum. I keep clicking on attachments (like images), expecting them to open in a new browser tab - instead the browser will keep the same tab, navigate away from the forum page and to the attachment. Have you ever considered adding a target=_new or similar to linked attachments? I think this may be more along the lines of typical UX expectations of today and I noticed that this is already the behaviour for links in posts. Would be awesome if it was doing the same with the attachments! Curious to hear if anyone else is thinking the same thing.

  11. I am running BT infinity with a fiber all the way into the livingroom down in honor oak park. We have had a rock solid service except for once when there was an issue with the exchange. At the time, I must say BT support were excellent and communicated very well throughout the hours of down time. Are you using Apple products by any chance? I am software engineer and we are mostly running apple products at home. I found that BT is using a technology called PPP over Ethernet (nothing unusual or non-standard about that) and that this didn't work well with Apple products. When I was using the BT router, there would be intermittent disconnections, blips in file transfers, random small transmission breakups. I replaced my BT router with an Apple Time capsule and everything has been solid ever since. This may be worth trying. As far as I understand things, this is not a BT problem - more a case of Apple products being "better friends" with other Apple products. Also, if you are using wifi, it could be a case of poor radio signals. Old victorian buildings can be very wifi-unfriendly. Try buying a wifi extender. There are also a little thing you can buy on amazon which routes your network from the router to a computer via the power lines in your house. I found this being a great solution, especially going from say the ground floor to the first floor.
  12. We just had our fireplace done up and a wood burner installed. The installation and all the work was done by Dennis Mart and his team and Matt at CASA (Bellenden Road) supplied the stove and helped facilitate the process. They didn't ask me to write this review but I feel I want to share my experience since it was really positive! The whole process was super smooth. I got several quotes and in the end decided to go with the people who I felt most understood what I was after. (Turns out it was one of the cheaper quotes too!) Matt at CASA is an expert when it comes to old victorian stuff and he works with restoration of old victorian radiators etc. So I felt they understood how to create something both functional and beautiful. The whole team came across as both knowledgeable and professional and they arrived on time and worked very quickly. I am super stoked about our new beautiful wood burner, it looks gorgeous! So I whole heartedly recommend both Dennis (and team) as an installer and Matt as a facilitator and advisor. It is also great because they can handle the ordering of the stove etc for you which greatly simplifies the logistics of things. If you are thinking of using CASA, check out Matt's instagram feed - it's sort of a portfolio and he regularly posts pictures of jobs here. That really helped me understand what I wanted and what result to expect: http://instagram.com/fireplaces_stoves_radiators/
  13. We are in the process of removing our old period style gas-powered fireplace and replacing it with a modern, scandinavian style wood burning stove. The installation requires lining of the chimney, removing and disconnecting the existing gas burner etc. So far I have been talking the following three places to get quotes etc: - CASA down on Bellenden Road (http://www.casaonline.co.uk) - A company called Natural Fires down in Catford (http://www.naturalfires.net/) - London Chimney liners in Lewisham (http://www.londonchimneyliners.co.uk/) Has anyone used any of the above companies? Any recommendations? Something to avoid? I found some very bad reviews online for Natural Fires which made me a bit hesitant. Any advice would be much appreciated! Many thanks!

  15. For nice local crafts stuff, I recommend LOIS down in Peckham (Bellenden side). Seems cheaper, more original, and in support of local crafts artists: http://www.lois.me.uk/
  16. The crafty fox market is pretty good: http://www.craftyfoxmarket.co.uk/
  17. For nice italian seafood, try La Querce in HOP. (http://lequerce.co.uk/)
  18. - The Horniman museum is an amazing place for kids! Also, they have a lovely farmers market on Saturday mornings. Across the road from the beautiful horniman park is a really nice playground. - The sydenham hill woods (dulwich woods) is a great spot for a bit of urban forest adventure. You can walk through the woods, up to sydenham hill station, then down college road and through dulwich park home. It's a lovely walk, i do it sometimes with my seven year old. But it is relatively long. - Forest Hill Pools are fairly close by and they do good swim schools for kids. - Climb one tree hill for an amazing view of London! Wood vale is a great location if you have kids. There are lots of cool places to go in your local area.

  20. @dulwichgal well I already have a license but I hadn't been driving for several years and never in London so I wanted some refresher lessons. I had one lesson with this guy from Herne Hill School and it wasn't great. He was shouting a lot and he was really stressing me out. My driving was absolutely terrible as a result. I then switched to insight and it was great. I did about 4 hours driving total with Dean from insight to get back up to speed. So I guess my case is a little bit unusual, but I would still highly recommend Dean for new starters!
  21. Does it have to be a female one? I had the same problem with a driving instructor at Herne Hill driving school and a friend of mine recommended Insight Driving school (http://www.insightdrivingschool.co.uk). I got in touch with an instructor named Dean and he was great. He was calm and his approach was totally different. Very relaxed, not stressed even once, no shouting. I thought he was absolutely brilliant and would highly recommend him.
  22. I recently had a series of refresher lessons with Dean at Insight Driving School (http://www.insightdrivingschool.co.uk/). He was great - highly recommended!
