  1. There are scores of copies of the photograph, of varying qualities and crops, on the net. The original is actually attributed to Stuart Heydinger/Observer and dated 1962, when she was 42. The best uncropped version I've seen, perhaps because it's actually from the Guardian/Observer photo library, can be seen among a collection at http://www.theguardian.com/books/gallery/2013/nov/17/doris-lessing-in-pictures. I've attached a copy.
  2. I bought a cheap KVM switch, all USB connections, on eBay from a merchant in China. After testing I'm 95% sure it's defective, but the definitive test would be a substititution. My old KVM switch has PS2 connectors so I can't easily do it myself. Is there anyone routinely using a KVM switch who'd be happy to try swapping mine in to their system for a minute, just to check whether it works there or not? I'd be happy to leave it with you to do so whenever suits.

  4. Provisions on the designation of polling places, etc are in the Representation of the People Act 1983, sections 18 and 31: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1983/2/contents. There's a statutory duty to review them every five years, though I don't think that precludes actions in between. The Electoral Commission guidance on reviews is at http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/electoral-administrator/polling-place-reviews. It usefully summarises most of the relevant law. It contains: Polling station 2.16 A polling station is the room or area within the polling place where voting takes place. Unlike polling districts and polling places which are fixed by the local authority, polling stations are chosen by the relevant Returning Officer for the election. ... Use of schools 5.22 It should be noted that for the purpose of taking the poll in England and Wales, the (Acting) Returning Officer is entitled to use free of charge schools maintained or assisted by a local authority as well as those schools that receive grants made out of moneys provided by Parliament. This includes academies and free schools.
  5. Could it be an Indian Runner duck? They come in many shades, including black. "A bowling pin on feet. And they're always in a hurry." according to http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/Ducks/Runners/BRKRunners.html.
  6. Loz, see regulation 10: Non-compliance with requirements of this Section 10.?(1) Where, as respects a crossing or controlled area, the requirements of this Section of these Regulations as to the placing of traffic signs and road markings to indicate the crossing or controlled area have not been complied with in every respect, the crossing or, as the case may be, the controlled area shall nevertheless be treated as complying with these Regulations if the non-compliance? (a) is not such as materially to affect the general appearance of the crossing or the controlled area; (b) does not, in the case of a Pelican or Puffin crossing, affect the proper operation of the vehicular and pedestrian signals at the crossing; and © does not relate to the size of the controlled area. (2) Nothing in any other provision of these Regulations shall be taken to restrict the generality of paragraph (1). BTW, zebra crossings are Schedule 1, not Schedule 4.
  7. > We had this group 2 guys i phoned 101 as need permission do that. > police did catch them was told were gang looking id Did the police come more or less immediately? Were the people charged with theft, or any other offence?
  8. There was a more subtle one covered on R4 You And Yours this morning. The scammers quietly hack into a small business's email account. When a customer is actually expecting or about to pay an invoice, they send their own version or follow-up. The only thing that's different and not genuine may be the bank acount details for receipt of funds, and possibly the fact that they're trying to hurry you into payment. The programme's put up their own anti-scam guide at http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/zxq8frd.
  9. Commiserations. He was outside the co-op this afternoon round about 3.55pm. The rider was helmeted, no gloves. He was making a row with high revs and burning rubber, so probably stationary or near so. He then managed to make off, stopped briefly a little further up LL and then, I'm pretty sure, left into East Dulwich Grove. I didn't notice anyone accompanying him.

    Bulky waste chaos

    > They took the barbecue but none of the other items which included a mattress > which was the main reason for needing the collection. AIUI these weren't actually in the garden when they came? In which case they've taken all that was left for them. I think it just needs checking that the other items paid for are still outstanding, and arranging for them to be ready for collection.

"You can contact a member of the Health Survey for England team, Emma Fenn, using the free phone number 0800 526 397 or by emailing [email protected]." http://www.natcen.ac.uk/taking-part/studies-in-field/health-survey-for-england/contact-us/ They should presumably be able to confirm whether your child is on their sample list.
  12. Here's a very short and clear officialish forum thread concurring in the belief that it's a false positive. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_scanning/microsoft-essentials-shows-trojan-dropper-on-dell/2134f8e4-9b89-406c-a672-2f94bc6f7dc4 I can see why MSE isn't putting a 3.5GB file into its quarantine folder. Embedded within that is one small file, uninst.exe, for uninstalling the AOL Connectivity Service (ACS), that triggered the alarm.
  13. Well, here are people who've been down the same alarm path. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_scanning/mse-cannot-quarantine-trojandropperwin32dunikrts/866372dc-6644-48d9-aeed-4845c036648b . Note particularly the referenced previous thread about it's being a false alarm. I wouldn't get immediately alarmed about it. It's not going to run itself, even if it is malign, which I doubt. For information, searching on "infected factory.wim" may also be helpful, as might scanning the D: drive with another AV program. Unless any substantial doubts remain, I think I'd be inclined to follow those who simply advise excluding the D: drive from routine scans.
  14. Sue, is this your first run of MSE? The offender is allegedly a file in your Dell recovery partition, and could well be a false alarm. That would tally with some similar reports I've just read in old web discussions about MSE.

  17. You could check the modem log. Does it show any losses of connection to the exchange or ISP? If you are using a wireless connection between router and computer, has your computer reported any changes in its connectivity or quality?
  18. People have mentioned the old Camberwell station. The following is from the 22 February written responses to Mayor's Questions (Appendix 8 at https://www.london.gov.uk/moderngov/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=0&MId=5678&Ver=4). It's also reported in http://www.southwarknews.co.uk/news/forget-the-tube-camberwell-could-benefit-from-re-opening-of-mainline-ghost-station/. Camberwell transport infrastructure Question No: 2016/0492 Valerie Shawcross Further to the decision to extend the Bakerloo line through the Old Kent Road area, please give an update on how TfL plans to improve transport facilities in the Camberwell area, which is also in need of much improved transport facilities. Specifically, what plans are there to pursue the option of reopening a rail station on the site of the former Camberwell station? Written response from the Mayor While Camberwell was not the preferred destination for the Bakerloo Line Extension (BLE), the BLE route option assessment concluded that it did suffer from poor rail connectivity which could be improved by reopening the disused station on the Thameslink line. TfL is investigating proposals to reopen the disused station with stakeholders, including the London Borough of Southwark. Initial feasibility indicates it would be possible to construct a modern station at this location if timetable changes could be made to accommodate an extra stop. TfL will be working with Network Rail and the London Boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth over the next few months to further develop the feasibility of this proposal.

The banks do have a code for dealing with this kind of thing, and it seems to have become a bit more favourable recently. See for example http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/send-money-wrong-account. You could also find her bank branch from the sort code, using http://www.fasterpayments.org.uk/consumers/sort-code-checker, if for any reason you wanted to write to her c/o her bank.

  25. Londow Wildlife Trust have recently announced receipt of a Lottery grant for their Great North Wood project. There are some very general details of it at http://www.wildlondon.org.uk/news/2016/02/16/discover-great-north-wood-%E2%80%93-south-london%E2%80%99s-forgotten-landscape, from which: "The initial nine month development stage of the Great North Wood project will see London Wildlife Trust working with volunteers, community groups and local councils to raise awareness of the woodlands, find out people?s views about how to improve the woodlands for both wildlife and people and to enhance the ecological value of the surviving parts of the Great North Wood and places in between. "If the first stage is successful, the Trust will seek further funding of around ?700,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to secure significant improvements to the Wood, with the aim of providing substantial benefits to London?s woodland environment and the people that live near to it." Also mentioned, a tree-planting event tomorrow in Brockwell Park: "Sam will be joined by Brockwell Park Community Partners and the Friends of Brockwell Park and invites anyone who is interested to join him on Friday 19th February 2016, close to the Cressingham Gardens entrance to the park. "Sam will be running two tree planting sessions, one from 11.00am to 12.00am and one from 1.00pm to 2.00pm. No experience is necessary and all tools will be provided." They also have a web page on the Great North Wood at http://www.wildlondon.org.uk/great-north-wood.
