Go into SMBS There's a Shan brand of ready made spice mixes. They don't look much but are good and reliable. They can be a little salty but I usually bulk up the fluids (low salt/salt stock) or some tomato pasata and ad a can of coconut milk (the thick stuff often from Thailand) Onions and ginger and garlic is usually good, along with a few chunks of potato My son is 13 and makes these often.

It's possible, but what's your point? That nobody should go and support these new venture? It really depends how you see the world but 'keeping up with the Jones's' thing is a bit old fashioned and someting I'd only heard about in working class comedies. That said Lou, you are a dying breed so maybe it's relevant in your narrow social group and age. Not sure it's actually relevant in most people's circles these days. That's > all well and good, but the sad reality is these > businesses need more than a wing and prayer for > survival. All business is sink or swim, just depends how long it takes to sink or swim. > I've been using various local businesses for > donkeys years and I've not felt the need to come > on here bragging about all of them. So you've not mentioned Ayres, Manzies Pie & mash. Kebab & Wine. Or Iceland then? I'd say you 'brag' about these to assure people of your 'working class' credentials. So it cuts both ways Lou. But then, > these businessses are still in operation, and yet > many of the ones the 'be seen doing it' crowd like > to bang on about initially, aren't in business any > longer. That's a sad truth for many small firms. Both Franca and MeatLiquor seem to have survived the opening interest wave and a regularly busy. Put your money where your mouth is, drop the bs > and just shop without bragging to everyone else > about it on opening week. Double standards again here Lou. You've banged on about the above shops for years and years. Lastly, businesses thrive off of social media. They need hits as a way to promote where they are and what they do. So the first wave is crucial, tho I'm sure some posts like #StandingInTheLineAttheCheeseShop are a tongue in cheek irony that you've missed the point of. And remember, as you're retired you have the luxury of sauntering off the sofa and hitting the shops when you've sobered up and feel like it. You're a bit out of touch with what it's like to work and be time poor. That in itself is a bit of an inconsiderate view of the world you look down at and pass comment on. Try and remember what it might be like to be in work still. Maybe you're exhibiting a jelousy streak at those who have a job and choice in thier life. Dunno, but it seems a bit mean at times.

Really, you'd get someone doing a tedious gig like Casulaty for ?80 k FFs give the man and his ilk a bonus I'd say. They sedate the nation at approx 7:00pm many nights of the week. Him and others keep my neighbour's indoors and quiet most evenings, filling their heads with guff to chat about later. "Did you see Casualty , oh blimey ..blah blah blah" at which point I can glaze over and nod accordingly. I'm happy my money goes to such things.

It's all hear > say. > > Louisa. I prefer real 100% butter, what's difficult to understand about that. Not 'I cant belive it's not butter' type products. It's quite simple. Google Bakers Friend/ butter alternatives. Stuff like this is common place in the price point sensitive end of the food industry. Most people are ignorant of how these products are used, as the bakers don't exactly advertise it. Why would they, blissful ignorance prevails. I'm not digging out Ayres, as many bakers like them use this type of product. However, I highlighted Ayres as it's the place yu bought up as the place you prefer to purchase a less expensive 'flan' product. My point is I get pi55ed off when people highlight prices of places (like the new Le Chardon place) when in reality its not wholly fair comparison. So yes, they both sell flan style products, but not the same 'like for like' is it really. So good luck to everyone. Enjoy your flan, whatever it contains.

The Dog is what it is, a pub run by a large (slightly shite) brewery chain It's the fault of the equally shite Dulwich Estates that it's run by the chain, they knowingly put/let the group in there. But as we know, the estate do not give a shite and they know that we know that. They also really do not care that we know that they know they don't give a shite. So good luck to Brian or Ken or whoever will be given the job of damage limitation, they'll try and make the best of it. The pub will always have trade because of its location. Suck it up or sod off.

It's not so binary as for one against the other. Just so we're clear I ACTUALLY SHOP AT AYRES AND HAVE DONE FOR 20+ YEARS. Do you not get that? But and it is a BIG but, I'm not blind to either because of the other. However, when I point out the practice of rinsing the new places with your usual guffawed "Flan for a tenner" type post, then it's going to get pulled up. And I'll ask what the genuine cost comparison really is, but you seem to want to blind side that question, lest it shines your stabby post in the light it should be seen in. And cheaper flans and pastries are cheaper why? Cheaper because the dearly loved places use substitutes to cut the costs, so not afterall the same product, just looking like the same product. But you struggle to swallow that, because that gets in the way of your prejudice. Why let a good snipe be undermined with grubby information to the contrary. Much like the mythical ?12 hamburger or Pizza you've trotted out, it's your wonderful hilarious way to show how much you love the new stuff in E.D. Other than that, how are you?

I get EDhistory's questions, not wanting to see accusations that are unfounded Only when others post spurious "Flan for a tenner" type posts I don't see the same questions, oddly. If Ayres (and others) aren't cutting costs by using butter substitutes I'd be very very suprised.

This is farkin' hilarious. Not seen stuff like this since Carter and his lady got all ansty, mind you he had a shotgun and polished it in the garden, so he did. So Toffo might have something equally as 'ard. She (lady Carter) also used the "How very dare you (which I always find very hilarious)" when rilled. If I remember rightly, Carter thought he should be allowed to blow a burglar to bits with his shotgun if they 'very dared' to break in. In fact I'd go as far as saying he hoped someone would break in so he could give them both barrels. It's a f***ed up world sometimes. Don't disappear tho, there's some beautiful stuff!

It's in fact not far of the genuine price of this gaff is it. But that info would dilute your backstab at this new place. And I've used Ayes when passing for 20 + years, only not for Flan as I don't like undercooked soggy pastry and industrial butter in mine. You might like that kind of thing, but it's pretty low grade in my opinion. That said, I'm not a massive flan/quiche/tart/filled pastry person.
