SE26 is Sydenham "The funeral was in one of those God awful places to get to, like Sydenham" Alan Bennett 'dissed' the place in one of his books. I whooped with joy when I read the above (tho it's become easier now the overground is here, so I hope you're reading this and taking note Alan)

Yeah and I have too, else I endanger my life Tell me, do you actually commute or ride a bike as one of your main Forms of transport. Or are you ever up on the deck of the bus?

Nigello Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Although the word "pedestrian" cannot mean those > who use wheels to get about (wheelchairs or > mobility scooters) don't forget about this > minority that uses the pavement to get around. And what about kids on those little 3 wheel scooter things, the ones with the elastic band collections on, usually powered along by little diddy people. And those slightly bigger boys and girls, on the strider things with no pedals, which are a cross between being on foot & on wheels. They should be on the road too no doubt. Surely they should, they're on wheels. Imagine one bumping into you, oh it'd be awful and selfish.

Isn't a pedestrian just someone 'on foot' Runners/walkers/hoppers

The Cheese Shop and adjoining Health Shop Lordship Lane
Seabag replied to Spangles30's topic in The Lounge
I understand the new cheese shop is to have a moisture / humidity controlled environment, a bit like Neal's Yard Dairy in Borough (but slightly more advanced) which is pretty special. It will be a unique cheese emporium of some standing, owned and run by a local resident. What's not to like (unless you're the guy from another cheese shop nearby) I like cheese! -
Come on Foxter, don't paint yourself into the silly corner It's nice to stride out on a Sunday, do & see something new. I expect to fly by one day and see you there, with a shandy/ale in hand.

I see that 'annoying & selfish' is part of your thing. But the pedestrian rights myth is often perpetuated. I see idiots on foot who could also do with some basic training. However, at times there isn't adherence to the Highway Code and I've not heard or seen a prosecution or thread about the subject. A couple of 'selfish & annoying' traits I see practiced are as follows: Stepping onto the zebra crossing at full pace after a 45 degree turn from the kerb, then expecting the car to haul up in double quick time. It's a power play, and a silly one that will get someone killed. The 'i'm looking at my phone' thing, when crossing the road. Again it will end in death, but in both cases, even with the stupiditity apparent, the motorist will seem at fault. No one want to hurt anyone in such incidents, but there is a certain mentality that seems to toy with these dangerous practices. There are provisions within the law, but most people are unaware or ignorant of them, or choose to flaunt them to grind their axe.

I've happily cycled 'on the pavement' for years, and will continue, because it's statistically safer (in places) than using the road. I know it's illegal, but I'm happy to pay the fine (one in 30 years so far, and that was posting a letter on 10 yards of pavement in Fulham) Elephant and Castle is one good example. Way too dangerous for bikes, so a cut across on the pavement makes sense. However, riding at anything other than a very slow pace is idiotic, and stoping to walk some bits goes without saying. Everybody's safety is paramount, and pedestrians generally don't mind if you trickle past at a good distance on a wide area. I've seen the Police many times, they mostly give you the 'I get it look' if youre being sensible. But to be clear, I do not advocate riding everywhere in this manner, for the greater part the road/cyclepath provision is adequate.

When naming our 2 boys I imagined myself shouting thier names in our nearby park. I do wonder at some people when naming children/pets. My neighbor is from Downham or 'Dannhmm' and has a Haley, Kayla, and an Aimee, as well as a dog called Bailey. It's quite the thing when she gives them all a call in one go.

I've come to hate vaping more than smoking There's a sneaking admiration to smokers, and I mean the proper ones. The ones who smoke Marlboro and such likes, knowing full well it's killing them. I've an admiration for their 'bollox' attitude to life and health. But I saw some muppet tugging away tonite, outside of the EDT, inhaling and then exhaling the biggest cloud he could of the stupid vape nonsense. And I felt nothing but contempt for him and it. Yeah so what, you can blow a cloud of of your stupid mouth. All the while thebloke further down is knowingly killing himself & enjoying it. But you with the vape machine, you're just playing at it. Get a life, have a real fag. Killing your self one puff at a time looks way cooler.

consultation on engines to be turned off when stationary
Seabag replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in The Lounge
It's one of those 'no brainer' ideas, much like driving and talking on the phone, that's doomed to be an uphill struggle to get into the driving culture. I'd love to always remember to do it, but often forget. It took a fine for me to properly rethink my phone/driving mentality. And I'm quite a considerate and thoughtful citizen. Maybe once the new auto turn off cars cycle through the system in 5 or so years, then great.
