You miss the point of signing an online petition. Its not about achieving the actual aim, it's about sharing the fact that you signed it on your social media feeds.....
  2. So....I don't want to play online poker with the general interweb. But myself and my mates enjoy a game every once in a while. But given lockdown, it's not happening. We've had a zoom beer, but have resolved that someone must find a means of us playing some social poker, just amongst us. Just as the 'houseparty' app has quizes, surely somewhere there must be a poker app. Any suggestions appreciated.......
  3. If only everyone followed Bruce's advice (see attached).....
  4. Nothing to see here...move along....

  6. Thanks for the explanation James. Fair enough then, wasn't sure of the relative utilisation of existing services, but sounds like there's negligible spare capacity within existing resources.
  7. Thanks. Have done so (on both suggestions!)
  8. James, I see you posted an update regarding waste collection above. But is there no scope that the council can actually re-allocate existing resources to better service residential waste collection? Thus not costing the council or council tax payers anymore. With everyone staying at home. Residential bins are filling up quicker, and many families are struggling with the volume of rubbish(despite making extra effort with recycling and second use at home). However, this must mean that bins elsewhere (I.e schools, commercial properties) are not seeing any (or very little) waste. I know many businesses may have private waste collection, but surely there any scope for the council to re-allocate existing resources during lockdown to facilitate more regular collections where the people are, rather than maintaining services where they are not? Thanks
  9. With everyone at home all the time, is anyone else noticing how ridiculously quickly the bins are filling up? I'm not sure what proportion of commercial premises/schools etc have council collections versus private contracts, but given high street/commerical estates/schools are likely to be significantly scaled down waste, doesyone have any knowledge on whether it's worth asking the council to perhaps explore reallocating existing resources towards more frequent residential collections....??
  10. So today.....my wife and 2 kids got locked in the alley field with about 20 other people at about 4:20pm today. Had to climb the wall to get out. It's great that they have opened them to responsible use. But dont understand locking the gates with 20-30 people in the field at a random time......
  11. Out of interest- is the sweatshop still open at the moment? Haven't been down lordship lane since lockdown. It does sell food, but is it classed as essential?
  12. I hope he didn't lick the stamp....
  13. Thats a special rant..... All i'll say that paying tax on income you make above the tax free threshold is not an optional extra. It's a legal requirement. It gets paid so that at times when people are in need of social security, like now, that those costs are least partially offset. I'm not suggesting she doesn't have it tough. But, as someone else has asked above, why doesn't she qualify for benefits? There are people who slip through the system for sure, but if the answer is (as you've suggested above)that she's 'too proud'; then I'm guesing she'll be horrified at her name being pinned to a public cry for charity as you've done on this forum. Anyway got to run, my mum has cooked me up some goji-berry and lavender pancakes.....
  14. Assuming she makes more per year than the ?12500 tax free threshold, then given that it is the end of the tax year this week, can she not use the money she no doubt has set aside to pay her self-assessment tax (which the governmentt have deferred for this year)?

  18. We just moved back into out place after 4 months out due to major works. Of course the builder wants to carry on. Theoretically, for the most part would probably be fine as long as you can socially-distance. But a major build never goes theoretically, and is stressful at the best of times. Sh!t will go wrong, even without a global pandemic thrown in. I would prob try to postpone if possible. We had to move back in for financial reasons (as you say) despite it not all being done, even though the 'plan' (with contingency) was that everything would be done well ahead of our 4 month timeframe. I would think things will be delayed, even if there's not an imposed lockdown. Also, the added stress of worrying that there might be is something you don't need I would suggest. Not what you want to hear I'm sure, as I know it's a big step to make the call, but I'd postpone if possible....
  19. Not trying to excuse the panic buying/stockpiling at all....but something to also consider here is that I read somewhere the UK eats around 8billion meals per year out at restaurants etc....thats about 10-15 percent of meals (by my very basic calcs) and food for thos meals is now being purchased at supermarkets for consumption at home. Again, the not excusing the stockpiling, and doesn't explain the toilet paper rush!! But there's a few moving parts here I think....
  20. Some positive news....from the graun.... NHS to get thousands more beds, ventilators and extra healthcare staff The NHS has struck a deal with private hospitals to provide thousands more beds, ventilators and extra healthcare staff from next week to aid in the fight against coronavirus. The extra resources, which include nearly 20,000 staff, will also help the NHS deliver other urgent operations and cancer treatments. The deal with independent hospitals is thought to be the first of its kind and will include the provision of 8,000 hospital beds across England, nearly 1,200 more ventilators, more than 10,000 nurses, over 700 doctors and over 8,000 other clinical staff. Matt Hancock, the health secretary, said: This is great news for the hospitals and staff doing everything they can to combat coronavirus. Under the agreement, the independent sector will reallocate almost its entire national hospital capacity to the NHS and will be reimbursed at cost. Sir Simon Stevens, the NHS?s chief executive, hailed the deal with the private sector, saying: We?re dealing with an unprecedented global health threat and are taking immediate and exceptional action to gear up. The NHS is doing everything in its power to expand treatment capacity and is working with partners right across the country to do so. David Hare, the chief executive of the Independent Healthcare Providers Network, said: We have worked hand-in-hand with the NHS for decades and will do whatever it takes to support the NHS in responding to this pandemic. This significant additional capacity across the country will be a major boost to the NHS?s efforts to treat those patients that need hospital care over the coming period and the independent sector stands ready to maintain that support for as long as needed.

Is the fact we're now discussing these trivialities reflective of the fact that there really isn't a great deal to legitimate criticise in the government's actions this week???

We have NHS workers, teachers etc all not able to be with their own families as they are treating or looking after other people's families. We have swathes of small businesses closing, and people being laid off. And then while all this is going we also have some people thi nk 'f+ck the advice....I don't care about the effort others are putting...I'll just go socialise at the pub'....
  23. I said on the duplicate thread... That could work...or just chain up all the trolleys....
  24. Or....just chain up all the trolleys....baskets only.... Sure some people will still go around 6 times...but most people won't bother....
