New security screens at self-checkout in Sainsbury's
TheCat replied to Robert Poste's Child's topic in The Lounge
I don't like them either RPC, and agree with most of your sentiments above.....but "It could be seriously distressing or even triggering for people with body dysmorphia, eating disorders or mental health problems"?....that might be over-egging the pudding a little in my view..... -

What a stupid statement in the context of a serious issue.

The OP mentioned 'interesting debate' in his/her post.... Also...I think perhaps my example of a discussion moving to 'correct grammar' from 'controlled parking' is a little more extemethan the normal cut and thrust/veering of topics in a face to face conversation.... but thanks for proving my point sue:)

Agree with the OP. Unfortunately its symptomatic of a much broadder issue that's combined with the rise of the internet/social media/blog posts.....there's no nuance in debate anymore, and especially if it's conducted through the internet.... If you express a view that questions immigration levels....someone will immediately brand you a racist or a xenophobe If you express a view that calls for higher taxes...some one will immediately brand you a socialist If you express a view which is in line with one Tory policy...then someone will accuse you of supporting fox hunting If you express admiration for one Labour MP...then someone will accuse you of worshiping at the magic money tree. In very few of these cases above will someone actually engage on the points you have made, because its much easier to just use hyperbole to shut someone down, than to actually have to think and reason.... There's also no ability to control/direct the debate online. You could write an essay citing 10 points about why you dont like controlled parking in Dulwich....and someone will flag that you should have used semi-colons instead of commas in your list of points...and then the entire thread is now about the use of semi-colons.....

...well...that escalated quickly.....

Toasted very, very lightly, not even enough o give it any colour...but enough to give the bread an every so slight crust, to ensure the bread holds its integrity and doesn't go soggy in the face of a small amount of butter, and a large amount of bacon fat...

when will it all end?...Calton Ave has been closed all week.... We live in the Beauval/Woodwarde/Calton/Townley area and it feels like we've been surrounded by roadworks for what feels like the best part of a year....Townley road has been ripped up a couple of time in various parts, woodwarde partly resurfaced, Dulwich village junction...jst to name a few....

Audi owners....lamenting the loss of Dulwich Audi
TheCat replied to TheCat's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks for the suggestions to all. After reading some of the commentsn i thinnk perhaps I have a rose tinted view of dulwich audi, after dealing with the Sydenham lot..... -
Maybe a slightly niche thread, as focused on Audi owners in the area.... As a family with two Audis, we used to always get the cars serviced at Dulwich Audi, and found them to be professional, helpful, and often seemed to be trying to actually 'save' you a bit of money on repairs (as a long standing local business would do well to do). We now take the cars to Sydenham Audi (as the next closest), and while I know Dulwich and Sydenham Audi's were/are both owned by Marshall Audi, I find the attitude and service poles apart. Everytime I have been to Sydenham Audi, it seems they manage to uncover 'problems' that I never knew existed and didn't ask them to look for; they are very keen to 'upsell' additional diagnostics which are very 'important'; and overall just give of the impression of being more interested in rinsing me for cash, than fixing my car. Has anyone else found this? and any suggestions on alternatives? And does it really matter if the cars are not serviced by Audi when I come to sell...as I find the few times i''ve been to Turners on Barry road, they have been brilliant.....

Reserving car space with wheelie bins
TheCat replied to maritap's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As many have said, its only really acceptable if its for a skip or a removal truck...and should be accompanied by a note. Most neighbors might be irked, but will begrudgingly acquiesce on these one-off occasions (knowing they would hope for the same when required). If its a regular thing, just to 'reserve' a spot, I would certainly be moving the bins and parking there.... On a related note...we have a few serial offenders on our road who choose to always park in spaces that would clearly fit two cars...such that only one car (their own) will fit...leaving 3-4 feet of space at front and rear......this infuriates me significantly more than the wheelie bins!! -

I know its he leaked export being quoted. Just best not to have it misrepresented. I maintain these are two different things. One is an aggregate of growth over 15 years. One is the impact on the annual figure. Apples and oranges.

I don't think you're comparing apples with apples there. 'Growth' being 8 percent lower doesn't mean GDP will be 8 percent lower....

It has definitely got worse recently on the pavements. I don't know about the parks. Perhaps its a seasonal thing, as its dark early, so dog walkers go to the parks less in the evening, and just wander the streets...hence more sh!t on pavement, and less in park....either way its a bloody disgrace....

I think its just a matter of time before we have an accident between traffic going 'straight' from Turney (across to Calton/Court), and traffic turning right from Court/Calton (to go North along Dulwich Village). Previously going straight across from Turney was what might be described as a 'lopsided' straight across, now its a clear 'zig-zag' to get across the intersection.....and I've noted those turning right from the other direction creeping further and further into the intersection, and not realising that the traffic coming across from Turney is about to make a sharp right in front of them to get into Calton....

We're in the very fortunate position of being smack, bang right between these two Outsanding primaries; and based on previous years catchments we're a good chance of getting our first choice out of these two....question is which should be first choice.... DVIS: On the plus side DVIS has a nice setting, and has been Outstanding for years, on the negative, I worry about the small chance we wouldnt make the catchment for Dulwich Hamlet when they have to move after year 2...which would be pretty disruptive for a 7 year old to not move with all his friends. Harris: A new school, and achieved and Ofsted Outstanding based on smaller class sizes and were a smaller school, can they maintain standards as they grow (doubling in size effectively from the time of the review)? Head teacher seems very driven, with high standards, which we liked. While the building is brand new, once they have 7 years of kids there will it seem excessively crowded? Some friends of ours seem very negative on Harris because its on a main road, and air quality would be bad. DVIS is also on a main road.....and we live in London...how much difference can it really make? (genuine question) I guess overall, we really like both, and have heard many positive comments on both....so in a twist on these pages, I would be interested in any NEGATIVE comments on either school from existing parents?
