Loz, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali_Baba ...Ali Baba brings the body home, where he entrusts Morgiana, a clever slave-girl in Cassim's household, with the task of making others believe that Cassim has died a natural death.[4] First, Morgiana purchases medicines from an apothecary, telling him that Cassim is gravely ill. Then, she finds an old tailor known as Baba Mustafa whom she pays, blindfolds, and leads to Cassim's house. There, overnight, the tailor stitches the pieces of Cassim's body back together, so that no one will be suspicious. Ali Baba and his family are able to give Cassim a proper burial without anyone asking awkward questions. The thieves, finding the body gone, realize that yet another person must know their secret, and set out to track him down. One of the thieves goes down to the town and comes across Baba Mustafa, who mentions that he has just sewn a dead man's body back together. Realizing that the dead man must have been the thieves' victim, the thief asks Baba Mustafa to lead the way to the house where the deed was performed. The tailor is blindfolded again, and in this state he is able to retrace his steps and find the house. The thief marks the door with a symbol, for the other thieves to come back that night and kill everyone in the house. However, the thief has been seen by Morgiana, and she, loyal to her master, foils his plan by marking all the houses in the neighborhood with a similar marking. When the forty thieves return that night, they cannot identify the correct house and their leader, in a furious rage, kills the unsuccessful thief. The next day, another thief revisits Baba Mustafa and tries again, only this time, a chunk is chipped out of the stone step at Ali Baba's front door. Again Morgiana foils the plan by making similar chips in all the other doorsteps, and the second thief is killed for his failure as well. Henry
  2. first mate, I wasn't aware of those incidents. So does the Water Authority monitor pressure on the system, and then have a veto over approval new developments? Henry
  3. Penguin, I agree it's logical to conclude that a greater number of people using fixed capacity infrastructure should lead to incrementally greater pressure on that infrastructure, but are you sure that an age of 100+ years is sufficient that we should be particularly concerned with respect to East Dulwich sewers specifically? Of course we are all familiar with the example of the Auckland Harbour Bridge which in 1968 needed to be reconstructed less than 10 years after having been put up, due to the original design failing to adequately anticipate subsequent robust demand. But I was under the impression that this was an anomaly, and in the UK in particular engineers had a good record of designing and building with the future in mind. Having written that, I realise the subway network here might be offered as a counter example, but then the extreme depths there make it a less comparable case to a low depth sewage network. On frequent floods in the area, do you have data on this? I'm not saying this isn't the case, I just haven't noticed the phenomenon myself, although have heard about the one particularly large flood in Herne Hill a few years back. Henry
  4. edhistory, Why are you particularly concerned about sewer capacity? Henry
  5. James, People who speed in built up areas must either be ignorant of basic Math and Physics, or choose to ignore such concepts when it comes to driving. Please see the linked article which shows clearly that even if one is wilfully ambivalent to others safety, the gains from speeding over short journeys are marginal when traffic stops and turning are considered. The author's example is from the US where roads are in general straighter and longer with fewer traffic calming measures such as 'speed humps' than in East Dulwich. What can be done to improve education on this point? lifehacker.com/does-speeding-really-get-you-there-any-faster-1556767685 Henry
  6. Jah Lush, Pls more details. More interested in the negotiations than the act, but use your discretion. Henry

  9. w.o.d I also just read randombloke's post. Since this is his field of expertise I would only follow my and other's advice to the extent it does not contradict his. Henry

The only exception to this may be that even the standard iPad may be too small depending on eyesight. In that case you may need to consider Android which do offer larger devices, consider though that these may be heavier and hence more tiring to hold for any length of time. If you were to also get a Logitec (or other brand, as long as the casing is metal / plastic and not leather + board) keyboard + stand peripheral, this would connect to the iPad via bluetooth which both devices will have installed. The shop will be able to set this up for you initially and it will not need setting up again thereafter, so whilst bluetooth will add layer of complexity on first set up, this is not something your father would need to deal with on an ongoing basis and will vastly improve the ergonomics. Henry
  11. Womanofdulwich, I would suggest an iPad with a logitec keyboard / stand. Holding a tablet for any extended period of time will most most likely lead to fatigue and disinterest. Having the option to type on the keyboard as well as the screen will also make the device more versatile. I disagree that Android and iOS are comparable in terms of ease of use for a user unfamiliar with these types of devices. In my opinion for most people iOS will be far simpler and will allow far faster engagement with most applications one would reasonably have in mind here. I use Android myself. Henry
  12. CP, Do this, and you'll be welcome anywhere. Henry
  13. RPC, Yes, there has been lots of consolidation of luxury goods brands in recent years. However for most of these companies the main demand story has been China, where due to pervasive fakery, it has been more important in terms of maintaining the premium brand image to keep manufacturer in Western markets. Hence why most high end goods from apparel to motor vehicles will still be imported into China despite the manufacturing and distribution cost advantages that making them there would bring. Italy will do just as well as the UK will for this purpose, probably better. I doubt though that Church's ladies ranges being manufactured in Italy implies any significant reduction in quality over being made in the UK, this would apply much more to mass market goods (for "ordinary people") made in lower cost markets at higher volumes.
