Chipping by hand chisel inches-thick layers of dried tarmac from the floors of old British Gas vans, in preparation to turn them into 'caravanettes'. Add to that the searing heat of the summer of '76 - those vans were like furnaces. Six weeks. Chipping by hammer paint from the superstructure of an ancient Royal Navy frigate in the middle of a freezing winter in Rosyth, Scotland, then re-painting with 'battleship grey' paint. ...At least the views over the Forth were nice. Two weeks.
  7. You don't need to go back as far as the Victorian era. I remember growing up in the 60's without such luxuries as central heating and double glazing. One morning I woke to find it had been so cold in my bedroom, my poor hamster went into hibernation! (We did manage to wake him up by putting him next to the fire though).
  8. I can't see how banning an organisation will reduce the threat of terrorism. Just as the ridiculous ban on the voice of Gerry Adams didn't prevent IRA attacks. It all smacks of politicians abusing powers for political expediency.

  18. It appears that the view of this person is not to clear paths unless you have the right tools for the job. Very sensible however there is also the question over personal responsibility by the person who chooses to walk on the path. If the path wasn't cleared properly but the person still chose to walk on it and then slipped and fell, then surely liability would also fall upon the individual? I tend to agree that health & safety sometimes is unfairly targetted however there are more issues with how H&S is abused by those who use it as an excuse to introduce a change for other reasons that aren't so compelling. Schools being closed due to snow could be seen as an example of this in some circumstances. As is often the case, it's not the legislation itself that is wrong, it's how it is interpretted and wrongly used that is the real problem here.

  21. Had a very jolly time last night, so nice to meet a few more lovely people from the forum, but missed others not there. Thanks Georgia for organising, as usual. Oh, no thanks quids, lovely though that sweater is... And I think David Carnell would agree that braces are far too much fun to hide away!

  23. Yep, I am... can't wait!
  24. I cleared my elderly neighbour's path last night and I'm sure she didn't know it was me. Crazy to think I could be sued for doing it.
  25. Flippin eck! Zounds! Oooh I could crush a grape. Thank you. I feel much better now.
