Barbara Hepworth sculpture in Dulwich Park missing?

Senor Chevalier Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > There > is no way this got out without someone seeing > something - especially given the CCTV world we > live in. I was thinking about this earlier and the only CCTV that I can think of anywhere near the Park is the traffic camera at the Grove junction - and presumably the next one along the South Circular. There's none in the park (that I'm aware of) and since there are no lights either, you wouldn't have got much on a camera. I suppose you might have got some people scoping it out. With luck, there are enough cameras on the surrounding junctions that the police can look for suspicious vehicles and try tracking it but not going to hold my breath. For other witnesses, well, the South Circ isn't all that busy after about 9pm - I've cycled the stretch from the college to the Grove with no-one passing me so lots of time for a van to pull in at the gates, cut the bolts and go in without anyone noticing. Once they were in the park, they could take the time they needed. Count me in with those who hate mindless criminals wrecking our heritage for the sake of relatively small amounts of cash. And yes, they keep talking about doing something about scrap metal dealers; just get on and do something. At the moment, while I'm sure there are legit dealers, there are enough who know that questions won't be asked to make crimes like this worthwhile. -
I think any risk of anything being transmitted is minimal. You've got more chance of picking up a bug from the doors of public loos since some people don't wash hands even if you do. From personal experience, they may hold the end of one piece in their mouths or break the thread with their teeth but when they wind it down to start threading, it's the middle (uncontaminated) of the thread that they use. Besides, the thread is only being used on the outside of the body, wrapped round a hair. It's a bit different from sharing water bottles with 'washback' or double dipping with crudites.

This afternoon on Lordship Lane
Applespider replied to stacey-lyn's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I had my handbag snatched from me in my street several years ago around midnight. I screamed and 5 different neighbours came out to check that I was OK. One jumped in his car and headed in the direction of the mugger, one called the police and took me in for a cup of tea (police arrived before the kettle had boiled) and the other three (in their underpants) headed back off to bed. So... not everyone in ED ignores things all the time... thankfully. Perhaps as others have said, they thought everything was under control or had no desire to chase after a potentially armed robber. I know sometimes I've passed accidents and so long as there are a few people who looked like they were dealing with the situation, I've carried on rather than be a rubbernecker. -
One of my team's jobs is training so when I interview candidates for new roles, I ask them to train me on how to make a cup of tea. I've had everything from telling me to chuck a teabag in a mug and add water to someone actually bringing in a kettle, cup and a chocolate biscuit for me!

Perhaps that's what happens when people hijack community forums to push their own agendas that aren't local issues... -
When was East Dulwich - 1245 AD
Applespider replied to edhistory's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Putting some basic Latin knowledge and some human thought alongside the translation, I'd go for And in this year there was an agreement between the prior of Bermondsey and the Prioress of Halywell about the tithes in East Dulwich. That the Prior and convent of Bermondsey will receive all the tithes arising out of the woods, pasture and the nuns' agricultural labour in the parish of Camberwell. -
Just to let people know the the road from the Harvester up to Wood Vale (and possibly further) is closed so the traffic is snarled up along the South Circular - traffic is being diverted back along Lordship Lane towards the Plough - and then presumably down Barry Road. Lots of blue flashing lights so assume it's an accident of some kind. Not entirely sure where the buses are going - there was a long line of southbound buses sitting in front of the row of shops opposite the Harvester - most of which were now 'out of service' so must have happened a while back. I went past just after 7pm. I did spot a couple of buses being sent along Overhill Road and then up Melford Road onto Wood Vale but they turned left towards Forest Hill Road rather than right back onto Lordship Lane. If you're going southbound from ED at the moment, go via Peckham rather than down LL.

Congrats to all who have a role so far! I missed out on applying for some of the roles but do have a second audition for a part in the Opening/Closing Ceremony which would be a blast. No idea what I would be doing - probably a human crash barrier but would be amazing experience

Willard Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > On the pics, what is the metal bar for on the top > corner of the bus? Looks like some sort of > bumper?.. You'll see them on most double decker buses. They're for knocking branches out of the way so that they don't whack into the front window. As a cyclist, I can't wait to get rid of the bendy buses - there are a few times where the driver overtakes and then pulls back in too early since he's not as aware of his rear end as he would be with a regular bus.

Miami are playing so badly that it should be pretty easy to get tickets. It's a hike out to Sun Stadium though and parking is pricey. When you're in the Everglades, do take the boat tour - it's a real blast. South Beach is fun to wander around - just don't get too caught up in the v pricey cocktails on the Ocean Drive hotels. Having said that, the Pelican does a gorgeous ceviche salad and some of the breakfast/lunch deals along the front are pretty good. Skip Jerry's Famous Diner (which you if you're on South Beach, you'll probably pass at some point). It looks fabulous from the outside and the inside but the food is expensive and not that great. David's Cafe is a Cuban restaurant and definitely worth going to. You know I'm sure I did more than just eat while I was there last year! It's worth going into some of the stores on Lincoln/Collins since some of the conversions are interesting. One of the Banana Republics is built in an old bank - it still has the teller counters where the cash registers are, a gorgeous 30s mural up the curving staircase and the changing rooms are in the old vault. We were going to go to Vizcaya House which is basically what a stately home would look like if it had been built in the early 20th century. My local pal said it was worth a wander but we ran out of time. See if your Orlando friend could meet you in St Petersburg (2 hours drive from them) which has the Dali museum and a Gulf beach where the water is far warmer. Orlando is a dump unless you're into themeparks - and even then, Busch Gardens near Tampa has the better thrill rides.

Came home last week to find 9 wheelies in the garden - 4 green, 4 blue and 1 brown. And one solitary brown caddy - so only one of the four flats can easily collect their food refuse. So... is there one number we can call to reduce the bin number (I suspect we could manage with 2 blue and 2 green) and get an extra brown bin (the neighbour with the garden frequently takes it round to the back garden while working to which the rest of us don't have access) and some more caddies? And one question - the polystyrene trays that you get pears/peaches in - blue or green?

Apparently the one on Dulwich golf course has been converted into a small reservoir to irrigate the gold course http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/roc/db/988732245.003001.html

Wood Vale is 20mph speed limit!!!
Applespider replied to Pilch's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Possibly since most of us took it as humour rather than a statement of intent; especially given the smiley at the end. People do pay naff all attention to the roundabouts though - I come up Melford Road on the bike to turn right into Wood Vale and regularly have to give way to speeding cars intent on going straight despite the fact that I should have right of way at that point. -
Ah hah - I think I did see you and wonder but was already en route to the door so mindset was firmly homeward bound by then. Glad that you had fun and are all still alive! Early arrivals posting a location in the bar would be v useful in future for those of us who perhaps aren't as regular at the drinks and don't recognise people.

Gosh straferjack... you gotta love the inclusivity which will really encourage new participants to come along in the future. At any other EDF drinks I've been to, there's never been that much of a problem finding the group without any requirement for hats or identifiers. There's either been a rough idea of where the bar we'd be (e.g. upstairs at the Phoenix, in the downstairs bit at the Black Cherry) or there's been an obvious crowd of small groups standing chatting in 2-3s to approach. Last night, most of the tables were couples or big groups of 5 or 6 who looked quite tight with each other - no truly obvious candidates. After two rebuffs from the bigger groups, I decided that it wasn't worth the effort for a quick few on the way home so gave up. Even the pizzas had an hour's wait so it wasn't even worthwhile hanging around for dinner on the off-chance that someone I recognised did show up. This is also the first drinks thread that hasn't had a blast of activity the following morning from the attendees reminiscing about a great night out... so I'm curious as to whether anyone actually found the group or if it was such a great night that everyone's still too hungover to type at 5pm the next day.

The pointy bit on my helmet doesn't have holes although the rest of the helmet does -which makes the whole thing more or less useless when it comes to rain protection. But the pointy visor does stop rain dripping into your eyes... it makes it drip off the edge and down your neck instead. Of course, to get the full pterodactyl look, you really want a rain cape so that you make swooping wing-like movements when you signal to turn.

best place to buy dollars in central/south London

Drxyster Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > According to the latest BBC "Watchdog" programme, > the best place for currency exchange is the Post > Office.I do not know if this is true, but > certainly worth checking. It might be the best place if you can't get to Victoria but if you can, the Post Office is regularly beaten by a few cents on the dollar. There are two places in Victoria which are worth going to - their rates are usually the same. One is the place that pablogrande recommends - it's just past the crossroads where Thirleby Rd/Palace St meet Victoria St. The other place that is usually a bit quieter is the first shop on Vauxhall Bridge Road - just round the corner from the Pret. Neither charge commission and they are always a few cents better than any of the national bods. -
maxxi - I must have just missed you. I got there about 8. Ordered a drink and did the same... no-one stood out as being EDF from the last set of drinks I went to at the Plough... Hope you've found some bods now...

Oooh - I find taxis worse than buses. At least with buses you have some idea of when they are going to pull in and they don't generally do U turns in random roads.
-
zeban Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > (slow) cyclists, please don't cycle right in front > of buses, buses move slow enough as it is! Sorry, zeban - not sure you're ever going to stop that one since there's no way you're going to get any cyclist to sit behind a bus in its fumes while it stops at bus stops. We'll overtake the bus and then it will either catch us up and pass us or it will sit behind us if the next bus stop isn't that far ahead. There are so many bus stops and passengers in rush hour that it's pretty unusual for a most cyclist to pass a bus and then have it overtake them again. One exception to that though is when the bus catches up on a hill (like DKH) or going over the Thames (like Vauxhall where cyclists are encouraged to go via the bus station); then yes, most cyclists will slow down the bus slightly if it can't get out to overtake.
-
I know the feeling - I quite often smile and nod at a fellow cyclist going the other way to absolutely no response. And I used to try to strike up a conversation if I was waiting at the lights... but I've virtually given up. Lots of cyclists wear headphones these days so I guess that doesn't help. Of course, if you're on a BSO in normal clothes then of course all the Rapha roadies will blank you...

bus journey to central london from LL
Applespider replied to bil's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Overground feels slightly less like a Tube given that it's pretty wide and you can walk right through - and the transfer to the Jubilee is easy post-rush hour; why they didn't put in 3 escalators at Canada Water, I'll never know. -
bus journey to central london from LL
Applespider replied to bil's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The quickest way probably is to walk down to Forest Hill and take the Overground to Canada Water, switch to Jubilee line to Baker St and then the Met/H&C/Circle line around to GPC. Once you're at Forest Hill, that should only take about 40 minutes and the Overground trains come fairly regularly. It's also the cheapest way if you're going PAYG since it only counts as one z3-1 journey. P4 at that time isn't great - the earlier buses get caught up in all the traffic through Dulwich Village and there can be big gaps in service. If you want to go that way, then I'd go with Loz - take whichever bus comes first (if you walk down to LL/WV stop, you can get either 363 or 176) and go via E&C although that often seems to take around 40 minutes just to get to Elephant so you will take longer. -
Frangelico is hazelnut and yes, you mix it just like an amaretto sour
