Do you change it up regularly to keep challenging the body? If it's all endurance work at one level, then try adding in some intervals to make it a bit tougher for sections. Or change the time you work out if possible - as soon as I start cycling to work in the morning (pre-breakfast), I drop a few kilos since presumably my body needs to burn fat. Doing the same amount of exercise in the evening in the winter (spin), doesn't have the same effect. And make sure you've got a mix of cardio and some resistance in there. The cardio will help burn off calories but the weights will help you build some muscle so that you burn more. And carbs do include the sugars in fruit juices (basically like drinking Coke with a vitamin pill), rice/pasta (particularly if you measure by eye, it's easy to cook up an extra 25g and 100calories), lattes/cappuccinos and most sadly, glasses of wine. You can not eat junk food and still overindulge in carbs quite easily.

He lives on the Lewisham side of Wood Vale so they'll take the crime stats if necessary. Was bizarre seeing the little group of white brollies on the corner and spilling into the road - although I did take some pleasure from tringing my bike bell and watching them scatter back to the pavement.

No trains today - June 25th ED Station
Applespider replied to Otto's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Railway closures are often like buses - you get none and then you get a year or so where they come along every month or so. It's not entirely surprising given that if they're replacing sleepers/rails, there's a limit to how much they can do in an overnight period and presumably the entire line needs checked to avoid emergencies. But with capacity as it is during the week with us demanding earlier/later trains, the overnight window has got shorter and shorter. The RR buses did seem to be running pretty frequently though so although it's a bit longer, at least people could get places. Anyone who keeps a car just for the one weekend in x that the trains are running would be nuts though. By the time you covered insurance/maintenance for the weekends the trains were running, you'd be cheaper getting a cab wherever you wanted on that weekend. -
Except that the Victoria line is suspended this weekend so no 'tube-age' unless you get the replacement bus up to Stockwell.

"It's getting hot in here"

Ah ha - a driver who likes the lights that flash. I've now taken to using two lights at night - one that is solidly on at rack level and the other that flashes on my helmet. Apparently, the flashing ones get spotted easier and the solid ones help people judge distance/speed more effectively. I wear a high-viz vest most of the time when cycling but there are days where it's particularly hot when it would be nice to think that the bright red or blue top I'm wearing should be sufficient if I'm cycling as I should (i.e. obeying the rules of the road) and drivers are as observant as they should be. The only time I don't have one on is if I hop on a Boris bike when I wasn't intending to travel by bike since it's not something I'd carry around. That's also the only time that I don't wear a helmet. I'm not sure I'd like it to be a law though since it does then add to the perception that cycling is more dangerous than it really is and takes the onus off drivers to be doing what they should be doing anyhow. SMIDSY shouldn't be an excuse in any instance where the cyclist has been acting lawfully and predictably regardless of high-vis. And if you go to countries where there is more urban cycling (Berlin/Copenhagen as well as the more often cited Amsterdam), there's very little fluorescent clothing on cyclists but fewer accidents. That's probably because of their strict liability that the less vulnerable road user is accountable if there is an accident so drivers take more care. If a law was going to be passed, that's the one I'd prefer. I believe that statistically more pedestrians are hit on roads by drivers than cyclists are but there's no campaign to make them wear hi-viz and helmets... although hmmmm, now I think on it... ;-)

Did something crash into them or did they just keel over?

is there a cycle speed limit in Dulwich park?
Applespider replied to SaveShambo's topic in The Lounge
I've always assumed, as a cyclist, that it does apply although without a speedo, it is hard to judge. I settle gor taking it at a leisurely pace and slowing to walking speed when there are lots of walkers/dogs around with brakes well covered. The 'time trialists' bother me too most notably since they're often so focused on being aerodynamic that they aren't looking round as much. I pity the parkie trying to intervene. However, a couple of weeks ago, I was cycling through Dulwich Park behind another female cyclist and her young son (4 or 5) on his bike. He was pedalling along but at a very low speed and I sat behind him since he looked a little wobbly and I didn't want to alarm him by passing. There was dogwalker nearby who was walking along the road with her dog off the leash but rather than call him to heel, allowed the dog to career through the path of the three bikes on the other side of the road which created great wobbling from the child and a near fall. Then we got some verbal abuse about speeding which we weren't. There needs to be consideration from all park users which in general I think exists. -
As Huguenot says - it's to do with alignment but there was a lunar eclipse that night which allows for the more extreme than usual colour. maxxi - I'm giggling...

A nice place to have lunch at or near Borough Market?
Applespider replied to Dorothy's topic in The Lounge
Bermondsey St has got lots of places - including a tapas bar, Jose, run by the guy who used to cook at Brindisa -
Yeah... the ones on Boris bikes did make me wonder... The thing that made me laugh was all the nakedness... and then clumpy shoes on the feet. Understandable but amusing none the less. One of the papers had an amazing photo of a woman who had a wheel painted onto her back to one side with a chain going across the other side of her back, around her waist and then with a chain ring painted around her breast. Stunning piece of work... Rosie - should you ever want to try cycling in London, I'll happily figure a route and go along with you. This time last year, I was of exactly the same opinion... This year I cycle 100 miles a week on London roads. :)-D

Advice on gyms in the area
Applespider replied to underhill_rick's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hmmm, if it's primarily free weights that you want, there is another one in Forest Hill on David's Road. There's a sign for it if you're wandering down that way. I think it's primarily boxing and weights where you can join monthly or just pay per session. -
It is definitely loud. Strange night of the week for a party... having heard the DJ's round of hip hip hoorays, I'm assuming it's a birthday.

Sainsbury Car Park - Attacks on women

Not being able to walk around with a handbag in case it is snatched almost bothers me more than not being able to walk around in a short skirt in case I get raped. Hmm... what's the equivalent of the Slutwalk for handbag lovers? The Clutch Crawl? The Satchel Stomp? -
Nope... I was wondering about that too - I think it may be coming from the cadet training centre since it's louder in that direction from my flat than from the Horniman side.

The LAFitness at Sydenham does have a pool and was refurbed last year so is a lot nicer than it used to be. LA Fitness also have a membership that lets you use the majority of their other clubs (except South Kensington) which can be useful if you work in Central London since you can go there too. -
Declining a wedding invitation - what's the etiquette?
Applespider replied to Alan Medic's topic in The Lounge
The other reason for an 8 month deadline might be to see how many folks won't make it so how big a 'party' do they have to throw on their return - and get it booked? I have a pal who married in South Africa so her family could attend (she was from Cape Town) and while she invited lots of people to fly out, she knew that since the majority wouldn't be able to make it, she also booked an event after the honeymoon back in the UK so that everyone could still celebrate. -
Hmm... the only other way I can think of is if you've bought them on an iPod or iPhone with a Purchased playlist - then when you plug it in, it should offer you the opportunity to download purchased items (if you're signed into the same account in iTunes already)
-
Yeah... you're supposed to have them backed up and transfer them over. Apps you can go and 'buy' again and it won't charge you but not music. However, if you email iTunes customer service and tell them your old computer got nicked (and you haven't done it before), they will often allow you to download your music purchases again but they have to trigger something at their end.

Rail cuts 'leave South London commuters out of the loop'
Applespider replied to Renzo's topic in The Lounge
I'd never have thought of taking that route to St Pancras. I'd usually hop over to Brixton and jump on Victoria line or if I had lots of bags, jump on the 63. It's the SLL service to/from Victoria that distresses me far more about the proposed cuts but there's already a fairly long thread on the forum about that. -
Pimms Royale is wonderful... but it's terribly drinkable. I'd thoroughly recommend that anyone trying it only does so within staggering distance of their home. I ended up with three unexpected house guests... one of whom did try to go home, got as far as standing up and then fell down. Oooh... that pudding does sound rather lovely...

I currently have Hendricks and Tanqueray 10 on the go since they suit different moods. Hendricks is more gentle. The Tanqueray 10 is perfect on a Friday night when I really want a G&T. It has to be Fevertree tonic though - so much nicer than Schweppes or Britvic. Sipsmith's gin is also rather nice. And I once had a bottle of Junipero gin which is made in San Francisco by the people who make one of my favourite beers, Anchor Steam, which was rather good too - quite aromatic but robust. I do like Pimms but had a few Pimms accidents a few summers back so I'm now banned by my friends from making jugs. I intentionally introduced one group to Pimms Royale (where you replace the lemonade with champagne/cava) and inadvertently introduced another group to Pimms Mexicana (where you replace the lemonade with doctored stuff that someone had previously added tequila to)

I say southwark - fortnightly bin collections
Applespider replied to Terry Thomas esq's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I live in a converted house with 4 flats. We have 4 green bins, 1 brown bin and 4 recycling tubs that we 'share' so that we can leave out one full of glass, one of paper etc rather than trying to use those silly little dividers. I'm now envisaging us having 9 wheelies... yikes! In principle, I don't mind the idea of a caddy bin but for those of us in flats with limited storage, it's yet another thing to find room for in small kitchens alongside the regular bin and the recycling one. -
Count me in too. I never get round to organising trips to the cinema since friends are spread out across town.

Agree it will be a long time... we'll probably have our cycle superhighway before then and that's not scheduled til 2015. I think they've set the gearing so that the very unfit have a chance to use them. I can't imagine using them in anything other than 3rd and it feels v low compared to my regular one. Apparently there have been a few nicked and spotted in other places outside the zone like Croydon etc
