I had some free cycle training the other week via Southwark's website. A two-hour lesson where my very lovely instructor, Louise, helped me figure out a route to Victoria and home again. I feel a lot more confident after it - in terms of cycling more assertively (although not stupidly) and less scared of being on the road in peak hours. Was most surprised by the effect of taking a more prominent position on the road and how much more room I got from cars/vans when I was there. The exact opposite from what I thought. However, it is amazing how many idiots are out there. More cyclists doing stupid things than cars though - like those merrily filtering past cars/vans already indicating left as the lights change and those who pull out to overtake a bus without even glancing behind them to see if there's anyone there. Nuts! Mirror, signal, manoeuvre should apply just as much on a bike - even if the 'mirror' is a quick glance behind you.

Wagas used to be cheap but put its prices up a year or so back and now feels overpriced. The new Wagamama's is Busaba Eathai - but I don't think there's one in Camden. I thought about recommending Cottons but then remembered that everytime I've been, I thought it was overrated - even their goat curry...

There's a really nice little veggie place just up from Chalk Farm called Manna on Erskine Road. I'm generally am omnivore but the food there was really fabulous. Their veggie tikka kebabs were amazing.

Cate - I make a salsa that sounds very similar except that I add a dash of Thai fish sauce to it and then leave it for an hour or so... adds a little kick. And I love em although I do dislike how messy they are to hedgehog with all the juice dripping

It is sad but having been mugged from behind once... it does make me slightly nervous and I do feel better if the person behind either crosses over OR preferably, when I turn to glance behind, makes eye contact with a smile, nod or other acknowledgement. While I know a mugger/rapist/axe murderer may be equally capable of making eye contact, I do feel safer since it shows that they're not worried about letting me see their face. And it feels a little more like a community/local friendliness action - just as you'd nod or say good morning in daylight.

I've got it and I'm pretty happy. After saying above that I didn't have the problem - if I do hold it that way, the signal does drop but I haven't actually lost any calls from doing it. I only tend to hold the phone that way if I'm playing a game or the like. I must hold it differently when actually on the phone. The battery life is better, it's much faster online and getting mail - and the camera is far better too. I hadn't heard the rumour about the swap of antennae and not sure how easy it would be to do. I would take it with a pinch of salt though since I think it's unlikely that Orange customer services would be the first to know given that Apple are apparently just handing out 'bumpers' to those who moan.

Yup :-$ Managed to get one on pre-order so thought...why not.

Although so far it's an unnamed source on a fairly small site which might just be desperate for clicks. I'll wait til there's a little more credibility given to it by bigger tech sites and they've done some more rigorous digging into the claims. I've heard that one too Loz although happily I can say that mine is just fine - holding it or not ;-)

Dulwichflower - sadly I can't. But I have a pal who did SE Asia with Intrepid a couple of years ago and had a great time. I used them in South Africa this year too and they were pretty good - nice mixture of people - local guides etc

Waitrose have got 25% off if you buy more than 6 this week. You can do it in a shop or online (but then you have to make up a case of 12)

You'll be fine. The 7.59 is sometimes quieter since it's a fast train and lots of people get on the 7.53 instead. I usually get on the first carriage without any problem although you need to stand. If you stay further down the train (closer to the stairs), then you may even get a seat. Best of luck with the new client - and don't panic if you are running late. I used to get the 8.30 on occasions and still make it to South Kensington for 9am.

I did quite like the Dancemob across Europe... although it was noticeable that the Brits were the only ones who appeared to be freestyling as opposed to bothering to learn the dance...

Petrol theft (from car on Upland Road)
Applespider replied to peggy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There's a long thread elsewhere on the forum about petrol thefts (originally from mopeds in Wood Vale) but appearing to be spreading further. http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,386585,page=1 -
Old trees in East Dulwich & around
Applespider replied to monniemae's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If you follow the link from the Guardian site, you can see what's already been identified http://www.ancient-tree-hunt.org.uk/discoveries/interactivemap/ The ones in this area are mostly around Dulwich Park/Common with nothing showing - as yet, for Peckham Rye. -
The inner road within the park is the one that is just over the mile - although I suppose it will vary slightly depending on whether you run around the inner curve of the road or the outer curve. It may very well be 1.5 miles if you run around the perimeter of the park itself.

I'll second the amazingly comfortable part - and now they do have some sequinned, crystalled ones so you don't entirely have to give up on nice-liking flippies. They're pretty hardwearing too - I climbed down Table Mountain in some the other month and both they, and I, are in one piece. You do need to break your feet into the thong but once you have, you can walk for miles in them - very useful when on holidays. But, I don't think they really work on the workout front. If you don't exercise at all normally, you might feel something in your calves the first few days (according to a pal). I go to the gym so didn't notice any difference. Think lunges/squats/diet are more likely to get you that perfect advertised butt.

Yes, I did it last year - you end up saving a fair amount - even more if you're a 40% tax payer. And yes, they tend to have a nominal value at the end of day rather than a market one. The other good thing about it is that you can get any cycling accessories that you need at the same time. So you also save money on a bike lock, lights, rack/panniers, jacket. Depending on which scheme your employer has signed up to, you can end up saving the cost of the VAT on the bike and accessories plus not paying the tax on that portion of your salary so it ends up quite a bit cheaper.

It is an odd situation. Part of me has sympathy for the returning officers. They are under pressure to get votes counted quickly - and voters do have 15 hours to vote in. But I do think that the Lewisham returning officer took the sensible approach. If people were in the queue or in the polling station at 10, they should have been allowed to vote. I think there were issues over this in the last US elections but the majority stayed open. How terribly British for queues to potentially be the hanging chad of democracy.

The one preselected case that I buy is the ?39 mystery one from Waitrose Wines. It's basically 12 bottles where the labels have been slightly ripped/damaged or bin-ends. But every one I've ever had has had closer to ?100 of wine in it with a bottle or two of bubbles or a port in it. Unfortunately, they only do it occasionally (once or twice a year) and it sells out in hours.

A naked woman has just run down Ulverscroft Road
Applespider replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Let's hope it was for a dare (drunken or otherwise) rather than running away from someone -
They made me think of the iPod Nanos - much less scary than the grimy variety. And smacked to me of pandering to retailers who want to sell multiple models to collectors/kids.

Miss M, because for some price doesn't always equal value (and yes, I know that's a subjective argument) Minitoots - I'd have a think about the kind of thing you want to do on it. If pics are important, then you want something with a decent sized screen - makes life much easier. I'd suggest the following depending on what your priorities are - and I'd aim to get it with 10.5 on it (don't worry about 10.6). I'm currently using an iMac which is 2.5 years old and happily running Photoshop etc on it. I'm not sure I'd go much beyond the 3.5 year mark so models from mid 2007 onwards it what I'd be looking for to find out prices. If you want a laptop, then you're looking either a Macbook (once they went aluminium rather than plastic - the screen on the plastic ones isn't great if you plan on working with pics) or an older Macbook Pro (which have much better screens). I had a Powerbook which I replaced with an iMac and while I don't entirely regret it, the portability with the gorgeous screen was great. A newer iMac (one of the aluminium ones) would be a decent upgrade too - particular if that's the space you currently have - their slimness and near silence are fabulous. The 24" ones had better spec'd screens than the 20" ones although obviously will be dearer. The other option in the second-hand market is the Mac Mini - yes, you need to go and buy screen etc (but you could use your old keyboard/mouse) but it gives you more screen size options and still keeps it all small and neat. Where? There are a couple of Mac forums online which allow long-standing members to advertise. (eg. Macrumors)

There are times at work where I've had a laptop sitting alongside my regular PC. I've picked up the mouse to do something to no effect - only to realise that I'm looking at the laptop screen rather than the normal one. Doh!

Probably because the impact of no flights on the economy and already shaky airline bottomlines, combined with the ease of getting lots of lovely footage of knackered people hanging around airports plus lots of personal misery stories to exploit and blame other countries for their 'airside' woes is a much better media option than someone getting a lie-in. I live under one of the flight paths crossing ED but must have poorer hearing than I realised since the noise from planes is far exceeded by traffic and, aside from the fact that I was supposed to be on a plane on Friday, I couldn't have told you they weren't flying since here, at least, there's no appreciable difference in background noise.

My sis double-checked that she had her mobile before leaving the house the other day. An hour later, she went to make a call and realised that she had her cordless house phone with her... The mobile was sitting by the charging cradle. Doh!
